BWDC:SDDK Chapter 41: On What the True Form of Beika's Batman Actually Is

Things were moving fast—his performance targets were actually chasing him! Inspector Megure had never imagined a day would come when he would be summoned like a familiar by his own "little brother."

Back when he dealt with the two Kudo brothers or Mouri, it was always him making the call to bring people in. How had it flipped to the younger brother calling him instead?

As for why he called both Kudo Yusaku and Kudo Shinichi "Kudo-ototo"?

That didn't matter.

I call the dad "brother," and I call the son "brother." We'll just count our relations separately! ——————

"Oh no, has my brother joined Shocker and decided to use me to pad his performance stats?"

Standing at the entrance of the basement, Inspector Megure looked at the crowd below dressed in Shocker villain costumes, his face twisted in a grimace.

What was this? Had he accidentally stumbled onto the set of a Masked Rider filming?

Why were they all villains? Where were the superheroes?

Inspector Megure, followed by Officer Takagi and several forensics officers, walked down the stairs.

His gaze swept past the superheroes nearby.

Masked Rider, Mobile Cop, Batman... hmm, they looked normal enough.

He walked past the superheroes and looked at the victim of the shooting, his expression turning serious.

Then, Inspector Megure suddenly felt something was off.

He whipped his head around.

His gaze instantly locked onto Ren Ichimonji—

Why is it that when I see Brother Ren, his name is automatically replaced by "Batman" in my head? What is this? Meme pollution? It's the first time he's seen Ren without a white coffee cup; he almost didn't recognize him!

Inspector Megure looked at Ren with a bit of speechlessness before gesturing for the officers to set up the cordon.

Then, he took a few quick steps, approached Ren, put an arm around his shoulders, and whispered.

"Brother Ren, what's the story? What's going on here?"

"I just got an emergency dispatch notice from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department headquarters while I was on my way. How do you manage to report the crime before it even happens every single time?"

"Also, where did your true form go?"

Ren: ? What do you mean by that? Are you implying that the true form of Beika's Batman is actually a coffee cup? Even if it were, you can't just say it out loud! As the saying goes, leave a path for others so we can meet again later!

Nearby, Mouri Kogoro stared at Inspector Megure and Ren. He pulled Takagi Wataru aside and asked, "What's the deal? Why did Inspector Megure go straight to that Batman brat the moment he walked in?"

"I'm the first informant, aren't I?"

Takagi Wataru fell silent for a moment.

He glanced hesitantly toward Ren before answering.

"Detective Mouri, you might have been the first to call the police after the crime occurred."

"However, Batman called the police before the crime happened. Theoretically, he is the first informant."

Mouri Kogoro: ?

For real? Is that even possible?

"...I see."

Having finished asking about the general situation, Inspector Megure nodded.

He walked over to the body, intending to inspect the situation personally.

He wanted to see if things were exactly as Ren had described.

Mouri Kogoro, standing nearby, hurriedly asked,

"Inspector Megure, aren't you going to ask for my opinion on this case?"

"I, the Sleeping Kogoro, have already grasped the ins and outs of this incident. I already know the truth!"

Hearing this, Inspector Megure snapped his head up and looked at Mouri Kogoro.

He stared at him for a while before whispering, "Brother Mouri, are you sleepy right now?"

Mouri Kogoro blinked and replied,

"Uh, I'm not sleepy at all."

Inspector Megure nodded with immediate understanding and said, "Mr. Mouri, please step away from the body for a moment. I'm about to begin the investigation."

The Sleeping Great Detective only has reasoning power when he's actually asleep.

Since Mouri Kogoro was so energetic right now, his "reasoning" would at best serve as a process of elimination. It wasn't even worth asking, especially since there was only one obvious suspect in this case.

If they eliminated that one suspect, what the hell would the officers of the Criminal Investigation Department even have left to investigate?

Mouri Kogoro: ?

Dammit, Inspector Megure, you've changed.

Usually, you call me "Brother Mouri," but when you have no use for me, it's "Mr. Mouri"!

Mouri Kogoro walked to the side with a heavy sigh. Mouri Ran comforted him from the side. "It's okay, Dad. It was already very impressive that you maintained order at the scene before the police arrived."

"In my heart, you're still the greatest detective!"

Just a little bit behind the "Laundry Machine."

Mouri Kogoro was quite moved.

If he knew that Ran still thought Kudo Shinichi was better, his feelings of being moved would likely transform into an urge to attack Shinichi, performing a sudden "change of heart."

The real Kudo Shinichi had no time to focus on the Mouri family's little drama.

Conan had a large bump on his head as he sat among the Junior Detective League, watching the investigation from a distance.

Originally, he had planned to stay by Ren's side and help explain the case when Megure arrived.

But who would have thought that Uncle Mouri wouldn't play fair?

One moment he was maintaining order, the next he saw Conan slipping toward the body and delivered a "Mouri Divine Fist"! Caught off guard, Conan was promptly grabbed by the collar—like a kitten—and dropped into the middle of the Junior Detective League members, forced out of the main battlefield of the investigation.

However, Conan wasn't discouraged.

He turned his gaze to Genta and asked,

"Genta, I remember you touched the Mobile Cop's sidearm earlier, didn't you?"

Conan's question startled Genta, who had just been discussing why Mitsufune Katsuji would commit suicide.

As the nominal leader of the Junior Detective League.

Genta always felt he was the smartest one in the group.

But in reality, he secretly admitted that Conan was indeed smarter.

Now that Conan finally had something he couldn't figure out and was asking him, the leader, he had to give a good answer! He tossed all thoughts of eel rice and curry into the trash can of his mind.

Genta tried hard to recall. After a moment, he said uncertainly, "I did touch it! But the moment I touched it, he slapped my hand away and even tried to scare me!"

—In that case, there's a way to verify my previous theory.

Conan pushed up his plain-glass spectacles.

A sudden flash of white light—coming from nowhere—streaked across the lenses! He had suspected the moment Honda Shu walked in that the handgun might have been swapped, which was why Ren hadn't found anything wrong with the gun during his check. Now, there was a way to verify it!

He just needed to confirm if Genta's fingerprints were on Honda Shu's toy sidearm...! ——————

"My recommendation is to extract the fingerprints from the firearms first and send them for testing."

Ren glanced back at the "Mobile Cop."

The director who had staged this entire drama as the murderer seemed to still think his play was flawless—that even Batman couldn't crack it.

It was indeed difficult.

Mainly because he couldn't just drag Honda Shu to a rooftop for a game of bungee jumping in front of the police; he had to find the clues slowly.

"Not just Mitsufune Katsuji's gun. His—Honda Shu's gun—needs to be sent for testing to check the fingerprints as well."

"If I'm not mistaken, there should only be my fingerprints on it..."

Beika's Batman said in a low voice, "If that's the case, the truth of the matter will come to light."
