As Shunsui saw the monsters appearing across the ground besides the Kumo shinobi, he immediately began to analyse everything he could see.
His eyes moved from beast to beast while his mind sorted them by size, shape and the rank of the Kumo shinobi who had called them forth.
He quickly figured out the pattern that the game had set. Genin were able to summon one of three basic creatures. They summoned either a wolf, a boar or a snake.
Chunin could summon stronger beasts such as scorpions, bears or crocodiles. Those creatures carried thicker hides and more dangerous natural weapons.
Jonin on the other hand could summon the most powerful options available. They called forth one of panthers, iron rhinos or even fucking wyverns that took to the air with wide leathery wings.
Shunsui also realised that the monsters summoned by the jonin possessed the ability to use chakra of the same nature affinity as the shinobi who had created them.
Since most Kumo fighters carried a lightning affinity the majority of the high level beasts became thunder panthers whose fur crackled with electricity, iron rhinos whose metal hides sparked with lightning, and lightning wyverns whose wings and breath carried the same sharp energy.
Shunsui was not certain whether the correct name was lightning wyvern or storm wyvern yet the difference mattered little while the creatures flew above the walls.
There were occasional beasts born from other affinities such as fire or earth but those remained rare among the Cloud forces. Despite the variety and the power on display Shunsui stayed ready for every type that appeared.
He turned his attention to the first line of defence and gave a clear order through the Yamanaka network. "Fire towers ready yourselves!"
Each fire tower held a large cannon shaped tube that pointed outward over the metal walls. The shinobi who controlled those towers possessed fire chakra nature affinity.
By pouring their chakra into the cannon they could charge a single blast that carried power equal to a miniature tailed beast bomb.
The heat and force of the shot were enough to change the shape of the battlefield in one moment. Shunsui watched the charging process for a short time and then gave the command that released the stored energy. "Fire!"
Bright pillars of flame roared out from the fire towers in perfect unison. The blasts travelled in straight lines and evaporated everything that stood in their path.
Beasts such as wolves and snakes simply disappeared into ash. Stronger creatures such as bears and crocodiles lasted only a fraction of a second longer before the heat tore them apart.
Even some of the Kumo shinobi who had been unlucky enough to stand too close were caught in the edge of the explosions and did not survive.
After one full strength shot each fire tower fell silent and entered a cool down period that could not be rushed.
Shunsui accepted the limitation and gave the next instruction without delay. "Charge again and wait for the cool down to be over." The fire nature users immediately began the slow process of gathering fresh chakra for a second shot.
While they worked Shunsui turned to the next group of defences. "Earth towers prepare to fire."
The earth towers were built differently. Each of them carried four separate launchers that were loaded with dense stone spears. When a shinobi supplied chakra the launchers fired the spears outward at high speed.
The individual spears were less destructive than the great fire blasts yet they required far less energy and possessed no cool down time at all. They could be launched again and again as long as the controller still had chakra to spare.
"Earth towers fire!" Shunsui called. Dozens of stone spears shot from the walls in rapid waves. The first volley was followed by a second and then a third without any pause.
Many of the lighter beasts such as snakes and boars found themselves skewered by multiple spears before they could reach the base of the walls. Their bodies pinned to the ground and their summoners were forced to watch the chakra constructs fade or die along with them with a spear to their chests.
The continuous rain of earth spears created a deadly zone that slowed the entire advance of the Kumo force and their monsters.
At the same time Shunsui told the Uchiha snipers to continue their earlier work. They were ordered to keep aiming at those Kumo shinobi who still stood outside the zone near their fortress and therefore could not yet summon any beasts.
The soft repeated sounds of the rifles continued to thin the rear ranks of the enemy army while the earth towers handled everything that had already stepped inside the game's territory.
When Shunsui saw the first group of wyverns climbing higher into the sky with their mouths already glowing with gathered lightning he knew a different response was required.
He turned toward the special tower that belonged to his sensei. Choza stood inside the Gravity Tower, one of the rare structures that demanded enormous amounts of chakra to operate.
Only an Akimichi with the clan's natural energy reserves or Shunsui himself could make the tower function. Choza placed both hands on the central console and poured his chakra into the system without hesitation.
As the Gravity Tower activated the pull of the earth around the entire base increased many times over.
Beasts and Kumo shinobi who had been running toward the walls suddenly found their legs too heavy to lift. Their speed dropped to a crawl.
The flying wyverns that had never needed to fight against strong gravity lost control of their wings and fell from the sky along with the jonin who rode them. The massive bodies of the wyverns crashed down onto the packed ranks of other monsters and shinobi who could not move out of the way.
The impact crushed everything beneath them.
Shunsui watched the successful drop and decided the moment was right to use one of the single use traps that surrounded the outer edge of the walls.
He gave a short mental command and the ground just beyond the metal barriers began to glow with a soft white light.
A moment later the chakra mines that had been hidden under the soil detonated in a long rolling series of explosions. Boom. Boom. Boom. The blasts rose high into the air and threw dirt, stone and bodies in every direction.
The force of the combined mines erased entire groups of lesser beasts and the Cloud shinobi who had been unlucky enough to stand among them.
Many of the Konoha fighters inside the towers saw the massive wall of smoke and flame and began to cheer. They believed the battle had already turned into a complete victory and that no serious threat remained.
Voices rose in celebration of the fact that the defence had so far produced no casualties on their own side.
When the thick cloud of dust and ash finally cleared the cheering stopped as suddenly as it had begun. Several of the largest wyverns still hovered in the air with their mouths glowing even brighter than before.
On the ground the iron rhinos that had survived both the gravity shift and the mine field now stood with their heavy horns shining with concentrated lightning energy.
Shunsui stared at the surviving monsters and the power gathering around them.
"Oh fuck."
