A battalion of one hundred shinobi gathered exactly as Shunsui had requested.
The regular platoons that had been fighting on that side of the front were placed a little farther back so they could serve as emergency support if the new plan failed and the valley needed sudden reinforcement.
Shunsui himself was confident about the fact that he was a better game player than any of the Kumo shinobi who would soon arrive.
Because of that confidence he felt little worry about the coming battle. He believed the rules of the game he was about to create would favour the defending side strongly enough to hold the narrow path.
He and the special battalion reached the valley that formed the main road toward the next city of the Land of Fire.
The ground between the two hills was open and flat enough for large numbers of fighters to move, yet the high slopes on both sides made it a natural choke point.
At the moment the area was still empty of Cloud forces. Kumo had not yet shown up. They were clearly still planning how to deal with the strange boy whose games had already forced one of their sections to retreat.
And since Konoha stood on the defensive, Kumo had all the time they needed to prepare.
Choza walked up beside his student and spoke, "Everyone is ready Shunsui." The man had checked the positions of the one hundred shinobi and confirmed that every requested shinobi with the required affinity and skill was present.
Shunsui nodded and let both of his swords appear in his hands. He took a long breath and activated the Tower Defense game while pouring nearly ninety percent of his entire chakra pool into the technique at once.
The sudden flood of energy spread outward in every direction. By his own estimates the influence of the game reached two hundred metres from the centre point.
That distance was the farthest he had expected to manage even with such a large sacrifice of chakra. The remaining ten percent of his chakra was kept carefully in reserve to maintain the basic upkeep of the game until he used the special feature of the game that would give him unlimited energy could take effect.
"Alright. Two hundred metres on all sides is now our territory. I will help you see the borders so you know exactly where the rules begin." Shunsui said.
The moment the words left his mouth solid walls rose from the ground along every edge of the circular area. The walls climbed high enough that ordinary shinobi could not see over them easily and they completely enclosed the two hundred metre zone.
At first many of the Konoha fighters thought the barriers were made of simple earth. Then they looked more carefully and realised the truth with shock. The walls were made of pure metal.
"Metal walls? How is that possible?" someone muttered in disbelief. The idea that someone could create permanent looking metal barriers on such a scale felt almost unreal.
Shinku studied the new fortifications and spoke with clear approval. "This is incredible. We now have a lot of protection from Kumo shinobi despite being outnumbered."
The metal walls would force any attacking force to enter through limited points and would block easy flanking attempts.
Shunsui was not finished with the basic setup. A tall tower of the same metal rose directly beneath his feet and lifted him until he stood just above the height of the surrounding walls. This tower was in the middle of the area of the game.
The upper section of the tower closed around his body with stronger plates so that he would not be an easy target for long range attacks.
Narrow viewing slits allowed him to see the entire field while remaining protected. He designated this central structure as the Battery Tower or more simply the Chakra Battery Tower.
The moment the designation was complete his nearly empty chakra pathways began to fill again at a rapid and steady rate. With this he would have nearly unlimited amount of chakra as long as he does not spend it too quickly.
Sadly, he would lose this affect if he was to leave the tower so for the entire game, he would have to stay here and guide everyone.
At that moment Shunsui remained the only true player of the game. The one hundred Konoha shinobi standing inside the walls had not yet received any special abilities from game.
That changed within the next few seconds. Towers of different colours began to appear across the open ground of the two hundred metre circle. Some glowed soft blue, others deep red, green, brown or pale white.
Each colour marked a different function and a different type of defense. Shunsui's voice carried clearly to every member of the battalion as he began assigning positions.
He directed people toward specific towers according to their chakra natures and their skills and he explained in simple terms what each structure would allow them to do once they claimed it.
Every one of the one hundred shinobi soon stood inside or beside a tower of their own. The entire enclosed area was now filled with metal structures of varying heights and colours that together formed a complete defensive network.
Four Yamanaka members each linked their minds to several other fighters and took places inside chakra battery towers so they could relay Shunsui's orders instantly across the whole group without worrying about chakra expenditure.
Shunsui spent several minutes explaining the exact role of each colour and the actions the shinobi in each tower needed to perform when enemies appeared.
The one hundred shinobi listened with growing excitement as they understood the power that had been placed in their hands.
Many of them became openly giddy at the thought of what they would be able to do once the fighting started.
Yet Shunsui himself stayed calm and alert. He knew the game would not remain one sided for long and that the coming battle would be harder than what others expected.
He remembered the basic truth that existed in every Tower Defense game he had played in his previous life.
The defending side was allowed to build and improve towers, but the attacking side was never left without tools of its own.
Monsters or enemy units would appear in continuous waves and throw themselves against the defenses to see whether those defenses would hold.
The same rule applied here. Because Konoha stood as the defending side they had received the power to build and control the towers.
Because Kumo would arrive as the aggressive side their shinobi would gain the ability to summon monsters that would march towards them and try to tear the walls and towers down.
