Chapter 157 - Chapter One Hundred Fifty-Six — The Missing Name

For the first time since the prison collapsed...

The First Fallen dreamed.

He stood inside the old Guild training hall.

Sunlight poured through the windows.

Heroes laughed.

Someone called his name.

He turned.

The memory ended.

He woke instantly.

Black flames quietly flickered around the chamber.

"...Again."

It was the third dream.

Always the same.

Always ending before he saw the face.

He reached toward the old photograph recovered from the Justicar archives.

Seraph.

Himself.

The founders.

And the empty place between them.

Someone had existed there.

He knew it now.

Not because of evidence.

Because his own heart refused to accept the photograph as complete.

---

Captain Vale reached the same conclusion in a different way.

She had covered the walls of her office with photographs.

Guild graduations.

Award ceremonies.

Joint operations.

Every image contained the same strange pattern.

People looked...

Wrong.

Not altered.

Adjusted.

As if every group photograph had unconsciously spread apart to occupy a space where someone should have been standing.

Director Chen stared for several minutes.

"I didn't notice it before."

"Neither did I."

Vale frowned.

"Now I can't stop seeing it."

---

District Nine found something stranger still.

One of Malachai's historians quietly delivered an old newspaper.

"The article is intact."

Malachai accepted it.

"So?"

"The headline references a speech."

He read aloud.

«A Historic Address by Bastion Draws Thousands»

Malachai turned the page.

There was no speech.

No photograph.

No description.

The article simply continued as though everyone already knew what had been said.

Someone hadn't erased Bastion.

Someone had erased the ability to remember Bastion.

---

At Justicar Headquarters, Seraph unlocked a storage room she had not entered since founding the movement.

Dust covered everything.

Training journals.

Personal correspondence.

Early drafts of the Justicar charter.

She opened a small wooden box.

Inside rested the original handwritten lyrics of the anthem.

She smiled faintly.

Then her smile disappeared.

Halfway down the page...

A line had been carefully scratched away.

Not crossed out.

Removed.

As though someone had deliberately erased a single verse.

She read the surrounding lines aloud.

The rhythm broke.

The anthem...

...was incomplete.

---

That evening, all four leaders independently reached exactly the same conclusion.

Someone had not erased history.

Someone had edited memory itself.

---

Far beyond the world, the Deceiver had abandoned every previous experiment.

Observation tables once filled with notes now stood empty.

Only one remained.

Across its surface were written dozens of questions.

No conclusions.

No assumptions.

Only questions.

The Deceiver studied them one by one.

Who removed Bastion?

Why erase a person instead of killing them?

Why preserve fragments?

Why allow clues to remain?

The Deceiver stopped.

One final question slowly appeared.

«Was I meant to find this?»

Silence.

Then...

For the first time in centuries...

The Deceiver felt something unfamiliar.

Not fear.

Not excitement.

Respect.

Whoever had done this had manipulated history itself.

And had done so well enough that even a demon devoted to observation had accepted the altered world as genuine.

The Deceiver laughed quietly.

"A beautiful deception."

The words echoed through the chamber.

"I've been studying humanity..."

"...through someone else's lens."

The realization should have been infuriating.

Instead...

It was fascinating.

---

Elsewhere...

Somewhere no map recorded...

A quiet room overlooked an endless sea.

Books lined every wall.

Thousands of them.

A kettle whistled softly.

An elderly figure closed a weathered journal.

Without turning around, they spoke into the empty room.

"They've started looking."

Silence answered.

The figure smiled.

"They're earlier than I expected."

A gentle breeze drifted through the open window.

The journal's final page was visible.

At the top was written a single word.

Bastion.

Beneath it...

A list of names.

Seraph.

The First Fallen.

Captain Vale.

Lord Malachai.

The Deceiver.

Each had a mark beside it.

Every mark was complete...

Except one.

The elderly figure picked up a pen.

Hovered over the final empty space.

Then set the pen back down.

"...Not yet."

The journal closed.

The chapter ended not with an explosion...

Not with a battle...

But with the unsettling realization that someone had been quietly keeping records of every major player all along.

And unlike the Deceiver...

The Architect had apparently expected every one of them.
