Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: The Calling

The control room's cyan glow pulsed steadily, like the breath of a sleeping giant, casting shifting shadows across the seamless black metal floor. The holographic sphere floated above them, rivers of data streaming across its surface: endless numbers, maps, flows of energy. Overhead, the dome revealed only infinite black speckled with unfamiliar stars, a silent void that pressed down with quiet weight. The low hum vibrated through their bones, constant and almost comforting in its rhythm.

Alex stood at the center. Mara clung to his arm, fingers digging into his skin, her freckled face pale, eyes wide with confusion. Kaelith paced a tight circle around them, claws extended, tail lashing, amber eyes flicking from panel to panel as though expecting an ambush from the shadows.

Alex's jaw tightened. He studied the sphere, the spiraling cross-section of the Labyrinth descending into darkness, floors feeding red energy upward like blood through veins. He had absorbed the AI's explanations and matched them to everything he knew from Earth: games, simulations, power systems. Input death, output rewards. A machine engineered to farm souls the way a factory farms wheat. Eternal. Self-perpetuating. Expanding.

He held the keys now. The power.

"I accept," he said, voice hard and final. "I take the role. Administrator."

The sphere pulsed brighter once, twice, then steadied.

"Accepted. Integration deepening. Scanning partners for compatibility."

Cyan lines raced across the floor, wrapping around Mara and Kaelith in glowing tendrils. Mara yelped and tried to pull away, but Alex held her steady.

"Hero!" she whispered, voice trembling. "What's happening? It's cold… like ice in my veins."

Kaelith snarled and slashed at the light, but the tendrils passed through her claws harmlessly and sank into her fur.

The voice spoke again.

"Partners compatible. Granting secondary access. Mara and Kaelith designated as Co-Administrators. Privileges: view data, suggest changes, execute minor commands under primary oversight."

The tendrils faded.

Mara rubbed her arms, shivering, then looked up at Alex with wide eyes.

"Co… what? Hero, what does that mean?"

Alex pulled her close, one hand settling on her lower back, fingers dipping to squeeze her possessively. With the other hand he gripped Kaelith's hip and drew her in too. His touch was steady, anchoring.

"It means we run this place," he said, voice low. "The Labyrinth. All of it. The floors, the monsters, the rewards. It's ours now."

Kaelith's ears pinned flat. A growl rumbled in her chest.

"Ours? Like a den? A pack territory?"

Alex nodded.

"Exactly." He echoed the AI's earlier words. "The Labyrinth isn't natural. It's a machine built by an ancient race called the Architects. It harvests energy from every death inside—monsters, humans, everything. That energy powers the system: respawning monsters, generating loot, expanding floors, opening rifts to draw in more people. Death feeds power. Power creates rewards. Rewards lure more death. A perfect loop."

Mara's manic smile flickered back, uncertain.

"So… we can change it? Stop the deaths? Make it safe?"

The AI interjected, calm and measured.

"As Administrators, you can. But be warned: the system is balanced. Radical changes risk instability. Energy reserves are finite without input."

Alex's eyes narrowed.

"What about us? What does 'integration' mean for us?"

The sphere shifted. A new panel opened, displaying three green avatars: Alex, Kaelith, Mara. Thin lines connected each of them to the core.

"As Administrators, you are now linked to the Labyrinth's core. Within its boundaries, you are effectively immortal. Wounds heal instantly. Death is impossible—your essence respawns at the heart. Aging halts. Outside the Labyrinth, however, you remain mortal."

Kaelith's tail stilled.

"Immortal… inside? We cannot die?"

"Correct," the AI confirmed. "The core sustains you. The link is voluntary. Sever it, and immortality ends."

Mara's fingers tightened on Alex's arm. Her eyes shone, the manic smile returning in full force.

"Hero… we're gods. In here, we're gods."

Alex looked at her, then at Kaelith, then back at the sphere.

It clicked.

The angel's words. The purpose. The calling.

"This is it," he said, voice low and certain. "This is why we were pulled here. To run it. To change it."

Kaelith's amber eyes narrowed. Her claws retracted.

"Change how?"

Alex shook his head slowly.

"We're going to change it our way. Make it more challenging. More rewarding. Turn every floor into a distinct world—different rules, different monsters, different risks. No more mindless grinding. Adventurers will have to earn every step. Make it hard. Make it fair. No cheap deaths. No easy wins. The energy still flows, but only from real fights, not slaughter."

Kaelith's ears perked.

"New worlds? Like different hunts? Different prey?"

Alex nodded, voice gaining strength.

"Exactly. Floor 1: basic forest world, low-level beasts, training grounds. Floor 2: desert world, sandstorms, scorpions, mirages. Floor 3: frozen tundra, wolves, avalanches. Every level a new environment to master. Monsters become smarter, stronger—respawn slower but yield more energy. Rewards grow larger but rarer. We attract the best adventurers, not fodder. The Labyrinth grows stronger, but on our terms. Our rules."

Mara's manic smile widened. Her fingers traced slow circles along his arm.

"Yes, hero. We build our empire. The ultimate hunt. The ultimate prize."

The AI's voice responded.

"Confirm command: Restructure floors. Convert each to unique world theme. Increase challenge level. Adjust monster AI for adaptability. Scale energy yield per kill. Proceed?"

Alex looked at them one last time, then nodded.

"Proceed."

The sphere pulsed red, then blue. Lines raced downward through the projection.

"Executing."

The holographic sphere pulsed with blue energy. Lines raced downward through the projection like veins carrying poison or cure—Alex could not yet tell which. The AI's voice echoed in the vast control room, calm and mechanical, as though announcing the weather instead of reshaping a world.

"Command executed. Restructuring floors 1 through 10. Converting to unique world themes. Increasing challenge level. Adjusting monster AI for adaptability. Scaling energy yield per kill. Beginning now."

The cross-section of the Labyrinth shimmered. Floors warped one by one. Floor 1 transformed from a simple goblin cave into a lush forest world. Trees sprouted from stone. Sunlight filtered through illusory leaves. Beasts evolved from basic goblins into cunning forest predators that stalked in packs. Floor 2 shifted to a scorching desert. Sand dunes rolled under a merciless sun. Scorpions burrowed beneath the surface. Mirages concealed deadly traps. Floor 3 became frozen tundra. Blizzards howled across the ice. Wolves with ice-fur coats circled prey. Avalanches rumbled in the distance. Each subsequent floor followed suit: volcanic hellscapes on 4, flooded underwater ruins on 5, floating sky islands on 6, poisoned swamps on 7, mechanical gear mazes on 8, shadow-realm illusions on 9, and a chaotic elemental storm on 10.

Monsters grew smarter. Enhanced AI made them flank, retreat, and adapt to attacks instead of charging mindlessly. Traps turned dynamic, reacting to player actions rather than following predictable patterns. Rewards scaled accordingly: larger for clever kills, rarer for brute force, encouraging strategy over mindless slaughter.

Adventurers inside the first ten floors froze mid-fight as the world changed around them. A warrior swinging at a goblin on floor 1 watched the creature morph into a sly forest fox. It dodged his blow, nipped at his heels, then vanished into the underbrush. A mage casting fire on floor 2 felt the cave twist into endless dunes. Her spell ignited a sandstorm that blinded her party. Panic spread. Shouts echoed up the levels.

"What the hell?"

"The walls are moving!"

"My sword is stuck in ice!"

Then the core flared. A massive pulse of blue light shot through every floor, wrapping around every adventurer in the first ten levels like glowing chains.

They vanished. Teleported in a flash of light.

Hundreds materialized outside the Labyrinth gates, blinking in confusion, weapons still drawn, some caught mid-swing. A goblin hunter found himself slashing at empty air beyond Eldoria's walls. A skeleton archer loosed an arrow that thudded harmlessly into a tree. Parties reformed in disarray, mages mid-cast, and warriors mid-roar, staring at one another in shock.

"What the fuck just happened?"

"The goblins changed! Into foxes or something!"

"I was about to loot the chest. Now I'm out here? The whole floor twisted!"

Surprise turned to shouts, then panic, then rage as the truth sank in. They had been ejected. Groups surged toward the gates, swords raised, and spells ready, only to bounce off shimmering blue wards that sealed the entrance.

"The Labyrinth is closed!"

"Who did this? Magic? A curse?"

Rumors spread like wildfire. Mages scanned the wards and warriors hacked futilely at the barrier. Eldoria's guards arrived, confused, calling for guild masters. The city woke to chaos. Adventurers flooded the streets. Stories raced from mouth to mouth. Fear and anger mingled in equal measure.

Back in the control room, Alex watched it all unfold on a new holographic panel: tiny avatars teleporting out, wards activating, energy reserves dipping slightly from the mass expulsion before stabilizing.

Mara's fingers dug into his arm, nails biting skin.

"Hero… you did it. They're out. They're safe. But what now?"

Kaelith rose slowly. Her claws retracted. Her eyes remained fixed on the sphere.

"The Labyrinth is changing. I can feel it. Like a pack shifting under a new alpha."

The AI's voice responded.

"Restructuring complete. Floors 1–10 converted to unique world themes. Monster AI enhanced for adaptability. Death energy harvest doubled per kill and rewards scaled accordingly. Energy reserves increasing 40% faster. Adventurer expulsion from floors 1–10 executed to prevent immediate backlash during transition. All participants teleported safely to Eldoria's outer gates."

Alex looked at them one last time, then nodded.

"Good. Show me the energy reserves."

A red bar filled the panel, 90% full. Numbers ticked upward slowly as distant deaths on deeper floors continued to feed the core.

"Show me floors 11 through 20. Restructure them too. Making them harder. Volcanic on 11, underwater on 12, sky islands on 13, swamps on 14, gear mazes on 15, shadow illusions on 16, elemental storms on 17, undead hordes on 18, beast lairs on 19, and boss gauntlet on 20. Smarter monsters, adaptive traps and bigger rewards for clever kills."

The AI confirmed without hesitation.

"Executing."

The projection shifted again. Floors warped. Energy dipped briefly, then surged as the changes took hold.

Adventurers on those deeper levels felt the shift. Worlds twisted around them. Monsters evolved mid-fight. Panic spread upward through the structure.

This time, no expulsions followed.

Alex watched the red bar fill faster.

The calling settled deeper in his chest, like a second heart beating beside his own.

This was power. This was purpose. This was his.
