Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Quarterfinals

The Iron Pit had reached a fever pitch by the time the quarterfinals began. The sand had been raked again, but dark streaks still lingered at the edges, silent testimony to the earlier rounds. Torches burned hotter now, fed fresh oil, their flames roaring upward and painting the arena in shifting crimson and gold. The crowd was no longer merely drunk; it was rabid. Tankards slammed rhythmically against stone benches, voices hoarse from hours of screaming, bets shouted back and forth in frantic waves. Nobles in their shaded boxes leaned forward, wine forgotten, eyes glittering with anticipation. Common folk pressed against the barriers, faces flushed, mouths open in continuous roar.

Alex had already fought and won his quarterfinal match, quick, brutal, decisive. His opponent, Draven Blackthorn, a hulking mercenary with a reputation for breaking spines, had entered the ring boasting of kills from three different wars. He lasted less than four minutes. Alex's Flamefist Gauntlet had melted half his shield in the first exchange, the iron rim sagging like candle wax, dripping molten slag that hissed and smoked on the sand. Draven's forearm blistered instantly, skin splitting open in weeping bubbles, fat sizzling beneath, muscle blackening in seconds, his scream high and cracking as the heat gnawed down to blackened tendon. Alex followed with a precise sword thrust under the ribs, shallow enough to avoid killing, deep enough to force a frantic triple slap on the sand as Draven collapsed, clutching the wound while blood poured between his fingers in thick, pulsing streams. Draven had crawled off bleeding and broken, pride in tatters. The stands had chanted "Flamefist!" until the stones shook.

Now the arena quieted, just enough, for the announcer's voice to roll out like thunder.

"Slot B – quarterfinal match! Kaelith the Beastclaw versus Sablefang the Chainbreaker!"

The crowd erupted, louder than before.

Kaelith stepped onto the sand first.

She moved with predatory grace, greataxe resting casually on one shoulder, blood-iron short sword sheathed at her hip, wyvern leather hugging every powerful curve. Dried blood still streaked her muzzle and arms from Vorrak's defeat; fresh sweat glistened on tawny fur, matting the short velvet along her arms and thighs. Her tail swayed once, slow, deliberate, amber eyes scanning the stands until they locked on Mara and Alex. Mara was standing on her seat again, staff raised high, screaming Kaelith's name so loud her voice cracked. Alex stood beside her, Flamefist Gauntlet smoldering faintly, eyes fixed on his beastkin with dark pride.

Kaelith's lips peeled back in a sharp, toothy grin.

Sablefang emerged from the opposite tunnel.

Another dog beastkin, female, leaner than Kaelith but taller, black fur sleek and glossy, ears cropped short in the old fighting-pit style. Her armor was lighter, dark leather reinforced with steel studs, designed for speed. A chain whip coiled at her hip; in her hands she carried twin short swords, blades curved like fangs. A heavy iron collar encircled her throat, etched with runes that glowed faintly blue. She walked with arrogant swagger, tail high, yellow eyes already fixed on Kaelith with open mockery.

The crowd hushed, sensing the tension between two of their own kind.

Sablefang stopped ten paces away, twirled one sword lazily, and sneered.

"Look at you," she called, voice carrying easily over the sand. "Collared and leashed. Fighting for a human master like some trained hound. Pathetic. I broke my chains years ago. You still wear yours like jewelry."

Kaelith's tail stilled. Her ears pinned flat. A low, dangerous growl rolled from deep in her chest, vibrating the air around her.

Sablefang laughed, sharp, mocking.

"When I'm done with you, slave, I'll rip that collar off your throat and use it to choke your master while he watches me fuck you bloody. Yield now and save yourself the shame."

The crowd roared, some cheering Sablefang's cruelty, others baying for Kaelith to prove her wrong.

Kaelith didn't answer.

She shifted her grip on the greataxe, slow, deliberate, then let the haft slide through her palm until the head rested lightly on the sand.

The horn blared.

Sablefang moved first, fast, fluid, chain whip uncoiling from her hip in a silver blur. It snapped forward, barbed tip whistling toward Kaelith's throat, aimed to tear out her windpipe in one stroke.

Kaelith exploded sideways, tail whipping for balance, dodged the lash by inches. The whip cracked against the sand, spraying grit and old blood in a stinging cloud. Sablefang spun, twin swords flashing in a double slash meant to open Kaelith from collarbone to hip, blades glinting like fangs in torchlight.

Kaelith met the attack head-on.

Greataxe came up, haft blocking both blades with a ringing clang that echoed through the Pit. Sparks flew, hot enough to singe fur. Sablefang pressed, strength against strength, trying to force Kaelith back, swords grinding against the haft, steel screaming.

Kaelith smiled, all teeth.

She twisted, axe haft sliding along the swords, then drove her elbow into Sablefang's solar plexus. Air exploded from the black beastkin's lungs in a sharp, wet grunt. Ribs flexed inward; Sablefang staggered half a step. Kaelith followed with a knee to the gut, hard, driving the air out again in a pained wheeze, then stepped inside and raked claws across Sablefang's ribs. Leather parted like wet paper; four deep furrows opened across muscle, blood welling instantly in bright, pulsing lines. Sablefang hissed, pain flashing in yellow eyes, whip snapping again, this time low, aiming to tangle Kaelith's legs and drag her down.

Kaelith leaped, tail lashing, cleared the chain completely. She came down swinging the greataxe flat, broad side slamming into Sablefang's shoulder with bone-jarring force. The impact rang like a hammer on anvil; Sablefang's arm went numb, one sword dropping from nerveless fingers. She staggered sideways, off-balance, then recovered, remaining blade whirling in a defensive arc.

Kaelith pressed, relentless.

Short sword flashed from her hip, blood-iron blade singing as it parried Sablefang's strike. Claws followed, raking across the black beastkin's forearm, opening deep, ragged furrows through leather and flesh. Blood sprayed in a hot arc, splattering Kaelith's muzzle. Sablefang hissed, dropped the second sword, switched to whip and claws.

She lunged, whip cracking toward Kaelith's face, barbed tip aimed to tear out an eye.

Kaelith caught the chain mid-air with her free hand, claws sinking into leather, yanked hard. Sablefang stumbled forward, off-balance, right into Kaelith's rising knee. The blow landed full-force under the ribs, cracking cartilage, driving air out in a wet, choking gasp. Sablefang doubled over, eyes bulging, mouth gaping.

Kaelith stepped behind her, greataxe haft pressing across Sablefang's throat from behind, choking her in a rear naked strangle. Sablefang clawed at the haft, desperate, legs kicking sand in frantic arcs, face purpling, veins bulging at her temples. Her tail thrashed weakly, once, twice, then stilled.

"Yield," Kaelith snarled into her ear.

Sablefang gasped, hands slapping sand frantically, once, twice, three times.

Horn.

"Kaelith! Kaelith! Kaelith!"

Kaelith released the choke, stepped back, let Sablefang collapse forward, gasping, coughing, blood dripping from her mouth and torn forearm. Kaelith stood over her, chest heaving, claws dripping, greataxe planted beside her like a marker. Blood sheeted her muzzle, throat, arms in thick, glistening sheets. She threw her head back, roared, long, shattering, primal. The Pit shook with the sound.

Mara screamed back, ecstatic, feral, staff high above her head.

Alex lifted the Flamefist, flame licking knuckles in salute.

Kaelith's teeth flashed, all predator, all triumph.

She turned and walked off the sand, leaving Sablefang broken, bleeding, kneeling in defeat.

Three down.

Two more fights to go.

The night burned hotter.

The gold waited.
