Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Gates of Eldoria

The sun hung low and red over the horizon as the small caravan crested the final rise. Below them sprawled Eldoria vast, chaotic, and alive.

Massive stone walls, thirty feet high and studded with iron spikes, encircled the city like a clenched fist. Towers rose at regular intervals, banners of every color snapping in the evening breeze: mercenary companies, noble houses, trade guilds. Smoke from a thousand chimneys twisted upward, carrying the mingled scents of roasting meat, forge fires, incense, and the faint metallic tang of the river that cut through the lower districts.

The gates two towering slabs of iron-bound oak stood open, guarded by armored men in polished breastplates. A steady stream of traffic flowed in and out: ox-drawn carts piled with goods, mounted knights in tabards, groups of adventurers laughing and arguing, their weapons gleaming with fresh enchantments. Alex spotted humans, of course, but also others tall, graceful elves with silver hair and sharp cheekbones; broad-shouldered orcs with tusks and braided beards; cat-eared beastkin slipping through the crowd with predatory grace; even a few scaled draconids towering over everyone else.

Mara pressed tighter against his back as they approached, her arms still wrapped around his waist. "It's always like this," she whispered. "Never sleeps."

Alex grinned, eyes drinking in the spectacle. "Good. I like busy places. More chances to take what I want."

The chief's wagon rolled through the gates without challenge; Eldric exchanged a few quiet words and a small pouch of silver with the gate captain. Once inside, the noise hit like a wave: hawkers shouting prices, blacksmith hammers ringing, minstrels competing for coin, the low growl of a tavern brawl spilling onto the street.

They followed the main thoroughfare cobbled, Avenue of Spears, toward the central market square. Buildings rose four and five stories on either side: timber-framed inns with swinging signs, alchemist shops glowing with strange colored lights, armories displaying racks of enchanted steel. Adventurers dominated the crowds, scarred men and women in mismatched armor, some carrying glowing swords or staves crackling with latent magic. A party of four passed close: a human swordsman, an elven archer, a dwarf with a massive warhammer, and a tiefling sorceress whose tail flicked idly as she laughed.

Alex watched them with open hunger. This was the kind of place where legends were made or bought.

Eldric led them to a wide courtyard near the river docks: the Lower Ward Slave Market. Wooden platforms ringed the square, iron chains dangling from posts. Torches already burned in sconces even though dusk had barely fallen. A crowd had gathered merchants in fine robes, rough mercenaries, veiled pleasure-house procurers, even a few nobles watching from shaded balconies above.

The chief's guards unloaded the twelve raiders, forcing them to their knees on the largest platform. The auctioneer, a thin, sharp-eyed man in a crimson vest, climbed the steps, clapping his hands for attention.

"Fresh stock from the borderlands!" he bellowed. "Strong backs, fighting experience, ideal for the pits or heavy labor! Bidding starts at twenty gold apiece!"

The auction moved fast. Bids flew, gruff voices, sharp gestures. Alex stood near the edge of the crowd, arms crossed, Mara pressed to his side. He felt her tremble slightly at the sight of the chained men, but her hand slipped into his, squeezing.

One by one the raiders sold: thirty gold, forty-five, sixty for the biggest brute. The scarred leader fetched a hundred, bought by a mercenary captain who wanted "cannon fodder for the frontier wars." By the end, the twelve had brought in four hundred and eighty gold total.

Eldric approached Alex as the last bidder walked away with his purchase. The old chief looked tired but satisfied. He pressed a heavy leather pouch into Alex's hand.

"Your share, hero. One hundred and sixty gold. More than we hoped. The rest goes to rebuild Willowbrook."

Alex hefted the pouch solid, reassuring weight. Coins clinked softly inside. He met Eldric's eyes. "You've been fair. I appreciate it."

Eldric clasped his forearm. "You saved my people. This is the least we owe. If you ever need a place to rest… Willowbrook will always welcome you."

With a final nod, the chief turned to his guards and the now-empty wagon. "We'll stay the night at the River's Rest Inn, then head home at dawn. You're welcome to join us."

Alex shook his head. "I think I'll stay a while. See what this city has to offer."

Eldric smiled faintly knowing, almost paternal. "Take care of yourself, hero. And take care of her." He glanced at Mara, who blushed and ducked her head.

Then the chief and his men departed, leaving Alex and Mara alone in the bustling square.

Alex opened the pouch, letting a few gold coins spill into his palm bright, heavy, stamped with Eldoria's roaring lion sigil. He grinned, wide and predatory.

"First real money," he murmured. "Feels good."

Mara looked up at him, eyes shining in the torchlight. "What now, hero?"

He tucked the pouch into his belt, then caught her chin and tilted her face up. "Now we find an inn. A good one. With a big bed. And after that…" His thumb brushed her lower lip. "We come back here tomorrow. When the platforms are full again. And I start buying."

Mara's breath caught. "Buying… what you want?"

"Exactly what I want," he said, voice low and dark. "Starting with someone who'll look real pretty on her knees beside you."

He pulled her close, kissing her hard right there in the open square—uncaring of the stares. She melted against him, hands fisting in his tunic.

When they broke apart, both breathing heavily, Alex jerked his head toward the brighter lights of the upper streets.

"Come on. Let's find a room. I've got coin to spend… and appetites to feed."

They disappeared into the crowd, two figures among thousands while the slave market torches burned on, promising more flesh, more gold, more power in the days to come.
