Chapter 85 - Chapter 73: The Invitation

A week passed quickly at Celestara Academy.

Too quickly.

The days blurred together beneath lectures, cultivation exercises, written examinations, crowded dining halls, and the strange new rhythm that had quietly formed around Anna, Lara, and Kaelen wherever they went.

The whispers never fully stopped.

Not after the Phoenix Crests.

Not after the market incident.

And certainly not after Lara's summoning.

By now, nearly everyone in the academy knew about the Eldergloom nymph.

Or thought they did.

Stories changed depending on who told them.

Some claimed the spirit had emerged from an ancient world-tree buried beneath the academy. Others insisted Lara had formed a direct pact with the Eldergloom Forest itself.

One particularly ambitious rumor suggested the nymph was secretly an ancient forest queen in disguise.

Kaelen had started rating the rumors for creativity.

"That one gets points for commitment," he declared as they crossed the western courtyard Friday afternoon. "Low points for accuracy. Moderate points for dramatic flair."

Lara rolled her eyes.

The nymph—currently perched comfortably on Lara's shoulder beneath the shade of her hood—tilted her head curiously at a passing flower bed.

Immediately, several nearby flowers bloomed.

"…Please stop accidentally influencing plant life," Lara whispered.

The nymph blinked innocently.

Kaelen pointed. "She's doing it on purpose now."

"She is not."

A vine curled lazily around Lara's collar.

Kaelen gave Anna a solemn look. "Your friend has become one with nature."

Anna laughed softly.

The week had settled strangely around all of them—not calmer exactly, but steadier. The chaos of ceremonies and announcements had faded enough for routine to return.

At least partially.

Today marked the final class day before the weekend, and the academy atmosphere had shifted accordingly. Students moved through the halls with lighter energy, conversations louder, rules obeyed with slightly less urgency than usual.

Even professors seemed resigned to it.

Which was why Kaelen and Lara currently had nothing better to do than accompany Anna across campus toward the eastern administrative grounds.

Toward the Obsidian Circle.

The academy architecture subtly changed the farther east they walked.

The student-heavy sections of Celestara gradually gave way to quieter corridors, older stonework, and narrower pathways lined with ancient runic pillars humming faintly with layered wards.

The atmosphere itself felt different here.

Denser.

More aware.

Even the ley lines beneath the ground pulsed differently—deeper, older, threaded with intentional concealment.

Kaelen shoved his hands into his pockets as they walked.

"I still think it's suspicious that you disappear into secret meetings twice a week and refuse to explain anything."

Anna smiled faintly. "I don't refuse."

"You absolutely refuse."

"I politely avoid answering."

"That's just refusal wearing better clothes."

Lara snorted softly beside them.

Anna glanced ahead toward the distant tower partially hidden behind layered wards and ivy-covered stone.

The Obsidian Circle.

Even now, she still didn't fully understand what they wanted from her.

Only that every session seemed to reveal pieces of something larger.

Older.

And every time she left—

The resonance beneath the academy felt louder.

Beside her, Alistar stirred faintly within her core at the familiar direction they were heading.

Aware.

Watching.

The nymph noticed the shift immediately from Lara's shoulder.

Her green eyes flicked toward Anna curiously.

Then toward the distant tower.

The tiny spirit's expression changed subtly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Lara noticed at once.

"…That's interesting," she murmured quietly.

Anna glanced over. "What is?"

The nymph continued staring toward the eastern tower, small fingers tightening slightly against Lara's shoulder.

Then a tiny flower bloomed beside her ear.

Kaelen eyed it suspiciously. "…I'm starting to think flowers are her emotional support system."

The nymph blinked at him.

Another flower bloomed.

"…See?" Kaelen pointed.

Lara shook her head, trying not to laugh.

But before the conversation could continue—

The eastern wards pulsed.

Softly.

A low resonance rolled through the stone pathways ahead.

Then the gates leading toward the Obsidian Circle grounds open with slow, deliberate weight.

Not mechanical.

Controlled.

Ancient runes carved into the black stone pillars brightened one by one as the layered wards folded inward, allowing passage deeper into the eastern grounds.

Cold air drifted outward from beyond the threshold.

Not winter-cold.

Stillness-cold.

The kind carried by places that held too many secrets for too long.

Then footsteps echoed softly from within.

Measured.

Unhurried.

A figure emerged from the shadowed pathway beyond the gates.

Kael Draven stepped into the fading afternoon light with the same unnerving calm he always carried.

Dark robes fell sharply around him, layered with subtle silver threading that shifted faintly whenever the nearby wards pulsed. His long coat moved barely at all despite the wind crossing the courtyard, and his pale gray eyes held the familiar weight of someone who noticed far more than he ever openly acknowledged.

Power pressed quietly around him.

Controlled.

Contained.

Dangerous.

"Well, Miss Crestwood," Kael said smoothly, voice carrying easily across the courtyard.

A faint smile touched his expression.

"Nice of you to finally join us."

Anna opened her mouth—

But before she could answer, Kael's gaze shifted.

First to Kaelen.

Then to Lara.

Then briefly to the small Eldergloom nymph perched calmly against Lara's shoulder.

One brow lifted almost imperceptibly.

"Well now," he murmured.

The faint smile sharpened slightly.

"Mr. Stagwood. Miss Grayson."

A pause.

"What a lovely surprise."

Kaelen immediately looked suspicious.

"…Why does that sound ominous?"

"Because you possess survival instincts," Kael replied calmly.

Then, after the briefest pause:

"And because this saves me the trouble of tracking the two of you down later."

That did not improve the atmosphere.

At all.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed immediately. "…You say things in the most threatening way possible."

"I've been told that before."

Lara adjusted the nymph slightly against her shoulder, visibly uncertain now. "Wait… tracking us down for what exactly?"

Kael's expression remained unreadable.

The eastern wards pulsed softly behind him, silver light crawling faintly across the obsidian stonework.

Then—

Unexpectedly—

Kael straightened slightly.

Not formally.

But enough that the shift carried weight.

His pale gaze settled first on Kaelen.

"Kaelen Stagwood," he said evenly.

Then to Lara.

"Lara Grayson."

The courtyard quieted.

Even the wind seemed to still slightly around the eastern grounds.

"For your conduct both within and beyond the academy," Kael continued, "your demonstrated aptitude under pressure, your discretion regarding sensitive matters…"

His eyes flicked briefly toward Lara's nymph.

"…and your respective merits observed by the faculty of Celestara Academy…"

A pause.

Measured.

Then plainly:

"I would like to formally extend an invitation to both of you."

Kaelen blinked once.

Lara stared.

Kael folded his hands behind his back.

"To the Obsidian Circle."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Anna looked genuinely surprised for the first time all afternoon.

Kaelen pointed at himself slowly.

"…I'm sorry," he said carefully. "Us?"

"Yes."

Lara looked equally stunned. "The… secret organization nobody is supposed to talk about?"

Kael tilted his head slightly. "An excellent start. You already understand the first rule."

"That was not reassuring," Kaelen muttered.

The nymph tilted her head curiously between them all, sensing the sudden spike in emotion again. A tiny white flower bloomed near Lara's shoulder.

Kael noticed immediately.

"…Interesting," he murmured.

Lara still looked stunned.

"Why us?" she asked quietly.

Kael didn't hesitate.

Not even slightly.

"Because you are among the strongest first-years this academy has produced in years," he said plainly.

Lara blinked.

Kaelen looked immediately uncomfortable.

Kael continued without pause.

"You are consistently at the top of your classes. Your practical evaluations exceed projected development curves. Your combat adaptability is well beyond your age bracket."

His pale gaze shifted briefly between them.

"And unlike many gifted students," he added, "you have already demonstrated the ability to function under genuine pressure rather than controlled academic simulations."

The words landed heavier than compliments.

Because Kael wasn't speaking like a professor.

He was assessing them.

Measuring them.

Then:

"You were recognized personally by the Emperor of Astoria," Kael said evenly. "Not for political convenience. Not for lineage."

His eyes flicked toward Lara.

"Earned merit."

Then toward Kaelen.

"Independent action."

Then both of them together.

"Judgment."

The eastern wards pulsed faintly around the courtyard.

Kael's voice lowered slightly.

"The Obsidian Circle does not seek perfect students."

A pause.

"We seek capable mages."

The nymph watched him intently now from Lara's shoulder, green eyes reflecting the faint wardlight around the gates.

Kael noticed.

Of course he noticed.

"And more importantly," he continued calmly, "we seek individuals capable of adapting when the world stops behaving predictably."

Kaelen crossed his arms slowly. "…That sounds significantly more dangerous than regular academy clubs."

"It is."

The honesty of the answer hit so quickly that even Kaelen paused.

Kael's expression remained calm.

"Most mages spend their entire lives learning how to function inside established systems," he said. "The Obsidian Circle exists for the moments when those systems fail."

Silence settled briefly after that.

Not uncomfortable.

Heavy.

Because the further this conversation went—

The less the Obsidian Circle sounded like a secret student organization…

…and the more it sounded like something built for crises.

Anna studied Kael quietly.

Because he was choosing his words carefully again.

Not hiding the truth.

Just revealing it in layers.

Lara shifted slightly, the nymph instinctively balancing with her movement.

"…And you think we fit into that?" she asked softly.

Kael looked directly at her.

"At present?" he said.

A faint smile touched his expression again.

"No."

Kaelen blinked. "That somehow feels insulting."

"It is not intended as one," Kael replied smoothly. "You are first-years. Inexperienced. Unrefined. Occasionally reckless."

Anna coughed lightly into her hand.

Kael ignored her.

"But potential," he continued calmly, "is often more valuable than polish."

His eyes sharpened slightly.

"And the three of you possess an unusual amount of it."

The courtyard fell quiet again after that.

Wind moved softly through the eastern pathways.

The wards hummed.

The courtyard remained quiet for a few long moments after Kael's words faded.

Wind moved softly through the eastern grounds, stirring ivy along the ancient stone walls. The layered wards surrounding the Obsidian Circle pulsed in slow intervals, faint silver light drifting beneath the pathways like submerged currents beneath dark water.

Kaelen exhaled slowly through his nose.

Lara adjusted the nymph slightly against her shoulder.

Neither spoke immediately.

Instead—

Almost unconsciously—

They looked at each other.

The same thought passing silently between them.

Then both glanced toward Anna.

Anna didn't say anything.

Didn't push.

But there was a quiet understanding in her expression already—as if she somehow knew exactly what they were deciding before they said it aloud.

Kaelen looked back toward Kael Draven.

Lara did the same.

And somehow—

Perfectly in sync—

They answered together.

"I accept."

The words overlapped almost exactly.

Kaelen blinked immediately afterward. "…That was unsettlingly coordinated."

"A little," Lara admitted.

Anna laughed softly.

Kael, however—

Looked pleased.

Not dramatically.

Not openly.

But enough that the faintest shift touched his expression.

"Excellent," he said smoothly.

The wards behind him pulsed once in response, the great obsidian doors beyond the courtyard glowing faintly along their carved resonance lines.

Kael stepped aside slightly and gestured toward the entrance behind him.

"In that case," he said calmly, "since you are already here…"

A faint smile returned.

"…you may as well begin today."

Kaelen stared at the doorway.

Then at Kael.

Then back at the doorway again.

"…That sentence feels deeply unfair."

"It was intended to be efficient."

"That's somehow worse."

Lara looked only slightly less nervous than Kaelen now, though curiosity had begun to overtake uncertainty.

The nymph tilted her head toward the open doorway, green eyes reflecting the silver wardlight. For a moment, she seemed unusually attentive.

Then tiny flowers bloomed along Lara's shoulder again.

Kaelen pointed automatically. "Your bond knows something."

"She always knows something," Lara whispered back.

Anna stepped forward first. Not confidently exactly.

But familiarly. Because despite all the secrets surrounding the Obsidian Circle…

This place no longer felt entirely foreign to her.
