Chapter 36 - Masks of Fire and Ash

Chapter Title: "Masks of Fire and Ash"

In the dim, rose-scented chambers of Lady Vireya, the candles flickered low, casting gold and crimson shadows along the silk walls. A hush blanketed the air, disturbed only by the soft rustle of a dress and the tightening of gloved hands.

Mei Lin stood at the door, eyes lowered, posture careful.

She had handed over the scroll.

She had done her part.

But what she hadn't expected was to hear the whispers.

From behind a curtain, she heard Vireya's voice—low, sultry, uncertain.

"He touched me. But he didn't break. Gods, he's stronger than I imagined. Even the darkness in him... it's beautiful."

A pause.

Then: "I want him. Not just for power. Not just to steal the princess's crown. I want him."

Mei Lin didn't move.

But her chest tightened.

So the snake wanted to own her wolf.

She had no right.

The Revelation

Lady Vireya stepped out moments later—startled to see Mei Lin standing there, still and silent.

Her eyes narrowed instantly.

"How long have you been here?"

Mei Lin bowed slightly. "Long enough to learn your tongue has two edges."

For a moment, Vireya's eyes shimmered with danger.

Then, just like that, she smiled.

"Well… perhaps your ears are more useful than I thought."

She stepped closer, circling Mei Lin like a panther.

"You were the prince's… what? A servant?"

"I was the woman he trusted," Mei Lin replied smoothly. "And the woman who learned what happens when trust dies."

Vireya studied her for a long time.

"You're dangerous."

"Only when underestimated," Mei Lin said.

A Binding Deal

"Fine." Vireya waved a hand.

"You'll stay by my side. Serve me. Listen. Clean. Watch. And in exchange—your tongue stays behind your teeth."

Mei Lin tilted her head.

"I accept. On one condition."

Vireya arched an eyebrow.

"I wear a mask," Mei Lin said softly. "Not for shame. But to remind myself what I've lost… and what I might still take back."

For a heartbeat, Vireya considered it.

Then she smiled wider.

"How poetic. A masked maid with the heart of a wolf."

She clapped twice.

"Bring her robes. And something elegant. She may serve, but I want my enemies to wonder who she used to be."

And So It Begins

That night, Mei Lin was no longer a noble.

She was no longer the wolf's love.

She was a shadow in a silk mask.

And in the mirror, she told herself:

"This time… I will not be the one cast aside."
