Chapter 15 - Masquerade party

The ballroom shimmered with gold and crystal light. Music pulsed through the floor, and laughter rippled across the crowd. Brooke was already on the dance floor, her red gown glinting as she spun, dragging Mia along with her. Typical Brooke — she didn't waste a second before making the night hers.

I stayed near the edge of the crowd for a while, chatting with Drake and Andrew. Drake looked relaxed in his dark burgundy suit, while Andrew, ever the gentleman, handed me a glass of sparkling cider instead of champagne.

"You girls are stealing the spotlight," Andrew added with a laugh, glancing at the dance floor where Mia and Brooke were laughing uncontrollably. "Mia's already got half the room watching her."

"Wouldn't expect anything less," I said. The warmth of the group made me forget for a moment all the complications hiding behind tonight's masks. We toasted to good times, to dancing, to being young and a little reckless. For that brief time, everything felt simple.

But then, movement across the ballroom caught my attention — someone standing by the bar, a silver mask gleaming beneath the lights. My breath caught in my throat. The pattern etched into the metal — those curved lines — I'd seen them before.

"Jay? You okay?" Andrew asked beside me, noticing how still I'd gone.

"Yeah… yeah, just thought I saw someone I knew," I murmured, eyes still locked on the figure. He lifted his drink, stumbled slightly, then laughed to himself as another man tried to steady him. My pulse quickened. I knew that posture, that careless grin that faded into exhaustion when no one looked. Keifer. No it couldn't be. It wasn't . I'm sure.

"Excuse me for a second," I said, handing Andrew my glass. Without waiting for him to respond, I started making my way through the crowd. The closer I got, the clearer it became — the silver mask, the blue suit. The onyx . Thank god it isn't who I thought it was. But I still had an aching in my heart what if it was him. No matter how long it had been I still loved him deep down even though I refused to admit it.

He swayed again, nearly spilling his drink. I caught his arm just in time. "Maybe that's enough for tonight," I said quietly. He looked up at me — unfocused, uncertain — and for a heartbeat, I wondered if he recognised me under my mask.

He didn't. But I knew him. From yesterday

I sighed, glancing back at the others still laughing across the room. Then I turned to him again. "Come on," I whispered. "Let's get you somewhere safe." I said my cold mask slipping " it's the golden sparrow "
