From afar, they talked in hushed tones, careful not to move closer to Maya's room. The shut door drew their eyes again and again, like something unstable waiting to give way. Whispers passed between them, hesitant, full of unspoken worry.
"She's never like this…"
"Should we knock?"
"Are you crazy? You want to die?"
"…Yeah, fair point."
