Chapter 44 - Part43:The Night Assault of Fontaine

War Blazes in Fontaine

As night falls over Fontaine's Luminsoft Harbor, the lighthouse sways violently in the gale, casting dim light across the sea. Suddenly, dense black shadows emerge on the distant waters—Yuan Shao's warships, ghostly and silent, quietly approach this tranquil land.

Yuan Shao stands on the deck of his flagship, his eyes as sharp as a falcon's, scanning Luminsoft Harbor before him. Clad in black battle armor and an ornate helmet, he exudes a chilling, majestic aura. "Send the order: the entire army shall land. We must seize Luminsoft Harbor before dawn!" His deep, resolute voice echoes through the night. At his command, the warships swiftly close in on the shore, and soldiers surge onto the beach like a tidal wave.

By the time the guards of Luminsoft Harbor spot the enemy, it is already too late. The sudden assault by Yuan Shao's army catches them completely off guard. With a sweep of his hand, Yuan Shao takes the lead, charging toward the harbor's fortifications with his elite troops. Once the Fontainian soldiers react, they quickly grab their flintlocks and resist. Gunshots pierce the night sky, bullets whistling toward Yuan Shao's army. Yet Yuan Shao has long been prepared; calm and composed, he orders: "Shield-bearers forward! Form shield walls!"

The shield-bearers move in an instant, arranging themselves tightly into peculiar tank-shaped formations. These shield walls advance slowly, shielding Yuan Shao's troops entirely. Flintlock bullets slam against the shields with loud thuds, inflicting no real harm on the soldiers within.

Under the protection of the shield-bearers, Yuan Shao's vanguard breaks through Fontaine's first line of defense in no time. Seeing this, a cold smirk tugs at Yuan Shao's lips, and he commands again: "Unleash the fish-oil bombs! Burn them down!" Soldiers hurl the prepared fish-oil bombs into the Fontainian military camp. The bombs detonate on impact, igniting raging flames that spread rapidly with the wind, turning the entire camp into a sea of fire.

Though the Fontainian border guards fight bravely, they suffer heavy casualties under Yuan Shao's fierce offensive. A young border officer waves his sword, shouting loudly: "Brothers, hold the line! Do not let them prevail!" Yet beneath the tidal assault of Yuan Shao's army, the officer finally falls in a pool of blood, his sword broken in battle.

As time passes, most of Luminsoft Harbor falls into Yuan Shao's hands. Gazing at the burning harbor, Yuan Shao's eyes glint with triumph. He turns to his generals beside him: "Press on. The Court of Fontaine lies ahead. We shall strike while the iron is hot and conquer all of Fontaine!"

Yuan Shao's army marches deeper into Fontaine, leaving war and chaos in its wake. Garrisons from all over Fontaine rush to reinforce, yet none can withstand the attack. In a fierce clash, a Fontainian cavalry unit attempts to flank Yuan Shao's army. But Yuan Shao is already wary; he orders his archers to fire a volley, and the cavalrymen fall one after another, their ambush ending in failure.

Another elite Fontainian infantry unit, familiar with the terrain, lays an ambush in a valley, ready to deal Yuan Shao a heavy blow. The moment Yuan Shao's troops step into the trap, the Fontainians launch a sudden attack, arrows raining down from all sides. Unfazed, Yuan Shao orders his shield-bearers to form defensive lines while sending elite soldiers to counterattack. After brutal fighting, the Fontainian ambush not only fails but also suffers devastating losses.

As the battle drags on, more and more Fontainian border guards perish on the battlefield. Some fall to the roar of flintlocks, some struggle in the blazing fire, others lose their lives in fierce close combat. Yet they never surrender, defending their homeland with their lives until the very end.

Yuan Shao's army surges forward like a ferocious tide, drawing closer to the Court of Fontaine, Fontaine's capital. Villages and towns along the way are reduced to ruins in the flames; civilians are displaced, their cries filling the air. The banner of Yuan Shao's army flutters loudly in the wind, as if foretelling a greater catastrophe looming over the Court of Fontaine.

Dark clouds hang heavily over the capital. A decisive battle that will seal Fontaine's fate is about to begin.
