Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The First Day Wasn’t in a Hurry

Ryan Walker used to believe that mornings were something to survive rather than experience, which was probably why most of his earlier college days had blurred together into a single memory of alarms, rushed showers, and lectures that felt longer than they needed to be.

This morning felt different.

Not in a loud way, not in the kind of way that demanded reflection or celebration, but in the subtle sense that his body and mind were finally moving at the same speed. He walked out of the hostel building with his bag resting comfortably on one shoulder, the cool air brushing against his face, and for once he did not feel the urge to check the time every few seconds.

The campus was already awake.

Students moved along the paths in loose clusters, some talking animatedly, others staring at their phones with expressions that suggested they were still negotiating with consciousness. The sound of footsteps, distant laughter, and the occasional call of someone recognizing a friend blended together into a familiar rhythm that Ryan had somehow never fully noticed before.

Ben Parker, on the other hand, noticed everything loudly.

"Ryan," Ben said, walking half a step ahead and turning back with exaggerated concern, "I just want to point out that the first day sets expectations, and being late is not the expectation we want to set."

Ryan glanced around, then back at Ben, completely calm. "We're not late."

Ben squinted at his phone, then frowned. "We are not early either, which is a morally grey area."

Ryan smiled faintly. "You always sound like you're arguing a case."

Ben shrugged. "Life is a series of arguments. I simply stay prepared."

Ryan shook his head and continued walking at the same steady pace, letting Ben circle slightly like a restless satellite. He noticed how the morning light filtered through the trees, how the campus buildings looked less intimidating when you weren't rushing past them, and how the day felt open instead of demanding.

As they approached the academic building, Ryan spotted a familiar figure near the entrance.

Elena Hart stood just outside, her bag held close to her side, her attention fixed on a notice board she had probably already read twice. She looked composed, but there was a careful stillness in her posture, as if she were making sure not to take up too much space.

Ryan slowed without meaning to.

Ben followed his gaze immediately and grinned in a way that suggested he was about to be deeply unhelpful.

"Oh," Ben said softly. "So that's the reason for the dramatic reduction in walking speed."

"There is no dramatic reduction," Ryan replied. "I'm just… walking."

Ben nodded. "At a pace that suggests emotional development."

Ryan ignored him and approached Elena at an angle that felt natural rather than sudden, stopping a comfortable distance away.

"Hey," he said. "Looks like we both survived yesterday."

Elena turned, surprise flickering across her face before recognition softened it. "Oh. Hi."

Her voice was quiet, but steady, and Ryan noticed the way her shoulders relaxed slightly once she realized who was talking to her.

"Morning classes should come with a disclaimer," Ryan said. "Something like, 'Side effects may include confusion and coffee dependency.'"

Elena's lips curved, just a little. "That sounds accurate."

Ben leaned in from behind Ryan's shoulder, clearly enjoying the moment. "I would like to add chronic yawning to that list."

Elena glanced at Ben, then back at Ryan. "Is he always like this?"

Ryan sighed lightly. "This is actually a calm day for him."

Ben placed a hand over his chest. "I feel attacked."

Elena laughed softly, then quickly looked away, as if the sound had escaped before she could stop it. Ryan noticed the way she adjusted her bag afterward, the small movement grounding her again.

The classroom door opened, and students began moving inside.

Ryan hesitated briefly, then gestured toward the middle rows. "Do you want to sit together?"

Elena paused for half a second, then nodded. "Okay."

They took their seats, Ben settling into the chair on Ryan's other side as if it had always been his.

As the lecture began, Ryan surprised himself by actually listening. Not because the professor was particularly engaging, but because Ryan was present enough to follow the flow of the discussion instead of drifting away. He noticed how Elena took notes carefully, pausing often, as if deciding whether something was worth writing down.

Ben leaned over slightly and whispered, "You're very focused today."

Ryan kept his eyes forward. "I'm experimenting."

Ben nodded seriously. "Growth phase."

Elena smiled faintly without looking up.

The lecture passed without incident, and when the professor dismissed them, the room filled with the usual shuffle of movement and noise. Ryan stood and stretched lightly, then turned to Elena.

"What's next for you?" he asked.

She adjusted her bag. "Another class. Same building, different floor."

"That's convenient," Ryan said. "I was worried my sense of direction would be tested immediately."

Ben snorted. "Mine already has been."

They walked together through the hallway, merging into the steady flow of students. Ryan found himself matching Elena's pace naturally, slowing slightly when she did, stopping when she stopped, without feeling like it required effort.

Outside, the sunlight warmed the path, and the noise softened into something more manageable.

"Do you like it here so far?" Ryan asked.

Elena considered the question carefully. "I think so. It's busy, but not uncomfortable."

Ben nodded thoughtfully. "Busy means opportunity."

Ryan glanced at him. "Since when do you talk like that?"

Ben shrugged. "I heard it once and decided it sounded smart."

Elena laughed again, this time without trying to hide it, and Ryan felt a quiet sense of satisfaction settle in.

At the stairs, Elena paused. "This is where I turn."

Ryan nodded. "Right. Same direction, just not as far."

Ben waved dramatically. "I will accompany you both emotionally."

Elena shook her head, amused, and headed down the stairs, Ryan following just behind. For a brief moment, the crowd thinned, and the noise faded into the background.

Ryan hesitated, then spoke. "If you want to study together sometime, I'd like that."

Elena looked at him, surprised, then thoughtful. "I'd like that too."

Ryan smiled. "We'll figure out a time."

Ben clapped quietly. "Plans have been formed."

Elena smiled once more and headed toward her next class.

Ryan watched her go for a moment longer than necessary, then turned to Ben.

Ben crossed his arms. "You're different."

Ryan exhaled slowly. "I know."

The rest of the day unfolded gently. Classes came and went, conversations felt easier, and even the usual annoyances of schedules and crowded hallways felt manageable. Ryan took notes he would actually read later, listened when people spoke, and found himself enjoying small moments that would have once passed unnoticed.

By the time he headed back toward the hostel, the campus felt familiar again, but in a way that felt earned rather than rushed.

He had not done anything extraordinary.

He had simply chosen to stay where he was instead of hurrying ahead.

And for the first time, that felt like enough.
