Chapter 5 - Behind the Glasses (iiiii)

"A normal human soul is typically white, while oddities depending on the lower the rank, the lighter the shade of the soul. An oddity's soul can become very pure.

You're one is slightly whiter than the average human I've seen. And it's why I thought you were originally a rank 7 oddity."

"I see.. but then what was the black miasma you mentioned about?"

"Hmm, well when an oddity doesn't follow according to their roles based on legends, they either lose some power or die completely, but in some rare cases, their soul gets transformed into a harmful fog, known as miasma."[1]

My heart raced and sweats continued forming on my face.

"Wait, does the shade of the soul correlate to the shade of the miasma as well?"

She gave a confused nod after seeing my worried expression.

"Based on your reaction, it looks like you've encountered one before."

A few more moments passed by, the clock filling in the silence once again.

"No, I personally haven't seen any before."

A blatant lie was I had just spoke and she knew.

Her ability spoke for me.

She stared at my reaction for a few seconds, before sighing.

"If something does arise, tell me as soon as possible, alright?"

Her gaze transformed from speculation, to a soft concern.

'But why...?'

I couldn't tell why she didn't force me to spill out the information she'd been looking for all along, but I wasn't going to question it.

Continuing the false sense of an honest conversation I spoke.

"So what's so dangerous about miasma anyway?"

"Miasma is like a disease, one that corrupts oddities, living beings, and objects nearby. In terms of bigger picture, miasma can disrupt and even kill oddities through miasma infection meaning destroying human beliefs and ideologies.

Think of the biggest religious beliefs and their follows, the thing they worship, or perhaps believe in, their thoughts completely ceasing to exist without their knowledge. Think of morals beliefs that hold humanity together into what they think is right, being destroyed. These types of cases, would undoubtedly destroy the Earth as a whole, would it not?

Destroying oddities doesn't mean just erasing folk tales from history, but bigger ideologies and thoughts that are the foundation of human belief being wiped from the face of the Earth."

My head spun and I gulped hard at the words that had just came out her mouth.

'This is my second time feeling nauseous already and it hasn't even been half an hour yet.'

Before I could continue asking any more questions-

*Ring - ring

'Dammit the bell..!'

"Well, I'll be going now. Oh and remember, if something does pop up about the miasma, make sure to tell me alright?"

"Sure, thanks for everything."

I let out a sarcastic remark under my breathe,

"Besides my head almost flying off."

She paused as she was about to leave the door and turned, flashing a slight grin.

"Sweet dreams!"

A few seconds passed after she left the classroom. The clock's ticks seemingly to laugh at me.

'I suppose I shouldn't be surprised she heard that... No, I have something more important I should be thinking about right now."

"My notebook... I have to double check that ink I saw earlier in the morning."

------

I sat down back in class, stealing a glance at Li Fang at the front. I shifted my gaze back to the boy that turned around as soon as I sat.

"Where've you been Hashi?"

Hiro glanced at me with a concerned face.

"Figuring out the world could end tomorrow."

"Uhuh, I see...

Well, if you have the energy to be sarcastic with me, then I'm sure you'll be fine with what ever it is you're going through."

Like always, Hiro never questioned anything I was up to. This part of him that showed support despite not asking or knowing the situation is most likely why I'm friends with him.

He wasn't the type to pry.

"Would you be willingly to save the world for us then, oh great hero?" Hiro smirked.

"Shut up, delinquent."

[1] correlate this back to the black smudge on the bottom corner of the notebook.
