Chapter 3 - Found a Pirate Game Menu

Staring at the handheld console, Evan Bailey moved past his initial shock and quickly calmed down, then began to analyze it. After being shaped by Land of Light for over two thousand years, he was able to keep a basic level of composure when facing problems. This kind of thinking had already become second nature to him.

The handheld itself was not rare and had no special abilities, but it was an electronic product and a result of technology. Because of that, it made sense that it could come from a Bronze Egg. As for Black Iron Egg, the contents were always messy and mostly worthless, like a simple bottle of water.

By logic, the rarer a Reward Egg was, the more dangerous the place where it appeared, so the item inside had to match that value. The System could refresh Reward Egg, but it could not change the rewards inside them. That meant the problem was not the cheating System, but this handheld console itself.

Evan Bailey picked up the console as the remaining eggshells turned into Light Energy and faded away. He was already used to these visual effects. For some reason, the Egg System always came with lots of flashy details in strange places, yet none of them were actually useful.

"NintendHell…"

Three large words were carved into the shell of the console. Evan Bailey felt this was the worst case of Nintendo being mocked he had ever seen.

Nintendo's Pokemon games were something Evan Bailey knew about. In his first life he had seen them and watched some of the animation, though not much, and he had never played the handheld versions. He was not a hardcore fan, but he still knew the basic settings.

Having seen the advanced technology of Land of Light for so long, a simple handheld was no challenge for Evan Bailey. Of course, that did not mean taking it apart to study its structure. Instead, he turned it on and checked what features it had.

"Hmm, solar powered," he said, judging from its appearance.

When the game menu opened, multiple versions of games were displayed. "It's a touchscreen too?"

Suddenly, a hint of surprise flashed through Evan Bailey's eyes. "'Pokemon Reboot'? This isn't made by Nintendo, is it?"

Pokemon Reboot was a game Evan Bailey had played before. It was domestically made, very realistic, and if you did not want to grind for time and wanted good creatures, you had to spend money. He continued scrolling and, as expected, there were many Pokemon games not made by Nintendo, like "Go, Pikachu" and "Pokemon GO", but there were no cracked or modified versions.

"What is going on here?"

"The description only says 'includes various versions of Pokemon games'. It never said they had to be made by Nintendo," the System appeared and showed off its language skills.

Evan Bailey said, "Sit down." System replied, "Yes!"

After hesitating for a moment, Evan Bailey finally chose Pokemon Reboot. It was the only version he had played before, so it was more familiar and easier to get into. Somehow, even though it was supposed to be an online game, it could be played directly on the handheld.

"Welcome to the Pokemon world. I am Professor Oak…"

The familiar opening animation and introduction played. He entered his name and created a character, and since he was playing alone, there was no way he would make some strange cross-gender character. When it came time to choose a starter, he thought for a bit and picked Bulbasaur, which matched him best.

Why was that? Because both Evan Bailey and Bulbasaur could survive just by basking in the sun.

After confirming Bulbasaur, something unexpected happened. A black hole appeared on the handheld screen, and a Pokeball fell out of it. Evan Bailey reflexively caught the Pokeball in his hand.

"Huh?" "This is…" Evan Bailey stared blankly at the Pokeball and the words on the screen saying, "You have obtained Bulbasaur."

"Don't tell me… this is really Bulbasaur?" Evan Bailey twitched the corner of his mouth. "Why not try it and see?" the System said.

Evan Bailey nodded and threw the Pokeball. A beam of white Light Energy shot out, and a green figure about the same height as Evan Bailey appeared in front of him. "It really is Bulbasaur?!" Evan Bailey shouted.

"Bulba, Bulba?" Bulbasaur looked around in confusion, then spotted Evan Bailey and excitedly pounced on him. With Bulbasaur being about the same height, Evan Bailey was directly pinned to the ground. Bulbasaur was not light, over ten pounds, but luckily Evan Bailey's body was strong enough.

Lick, lick, lick.

Feeling the wetness on his face, Evan Bailey wiped it away. "I think I roughly know how this handheld works now," Evan Bailey said.

The captured creatures appeared in the real world while still retaining their data in the game. Whether it was the creature formed by the program or the one in reality, if one side grew stronger, the other would grow as well. Leaning against Bulbasaur, Evan Bailey studied the handheld and could not help admiring it, thinking it truly lived up to being a diamond Reward Egg.

Bulbasaur lay comfortably on the ground, basking in the sunlight with a lazy expression. After finishing the beginner tutorial, Evan Bailey obtained two more creatures, Poliwag and Oddish. As expected, they also appeared right in front of him.

According to the data detected by the System, Bulbasaur was 0.7 meters tall, exactly the same height as the current Evan Bailey. Being five years old really hurt in situations like this. Aside from that, all the other versions of games in the handheld had disappeared, leaving only one called "Remake".

Some functions in "Remake" could not yet be tested because of level and condition restrictions. For example, he had no way to know whether spending money would actually work. Evan Bailey stored the handheld in the System's inventory, patted his clothes, and stood up.

"Come back, Bulbasaur." "Bulba, Bulba." Bulbasaur turned into a streak of Light Energy and flew onto the back of Evan Bailey's left hand.

On the back of his hand was a diamond-shaped emblem with the image of a book inside. It had been mentioned before that this world was not an ordinary one, because humans here could awaken into a profession known as an Emblem Bearer. Over the past five days, Evan Bailey had gathered quite a bit of information about Emblem Bearer, since it was the mainstream power of this world and basic knowledge was easy to find.

People in this world would awaken a professional emblem between the ages of seven and ten. Different professions had different emblem designs and granted different kinds of power. The emblem on Evan Bailey's hand had only been noticed after he obtained Bulbasaur, appearing silently on the back of his left hand with the profession of Summoner.

After awakening the emblem, Bulbasaur, Poliwag, and Oddish moved into it. Inside the emblem, the creatures stayed in a dormant state with minimal consumption. From this, Evan Bailey could tell that the awakening of an Emblem Bearer was not due to bloodline inheritance, but the power of rules.

As long as one was in this world and met the conditions, a suitable professional emblem would awaken. However, even knowing this, without cultivation methods, strength would not increase. Evan Bailey felt that becoming an Emblem Bearer was a very good choice while he could not transform.

At the very least, it provided some level of safety in this world. After all, this was not an ordinary world. Moreover, becoming an Emblem Bearer could save a lot of trouble, and it was said one could even apply for poverty assistance and receive subsidies.

Now, Evan Bailey needed to go to a place where he could obtain cultivation methods and become stronger, the Emblem Academy. That was right, the same academy from earlier. He had not run far at all and was still very close to it.

Joining the academy would definitely allow him to receive proper System education for Emblem Bearer. As for his identity, with such a cute face, he figured he could probably get by. "Sigh, being this strong but still having to rely on looks to get by is really a sin."
