Chapter 38 - Chapter 37: The First Crack.

The bullet train back to Tokyo was half-empty at this hour.

Haruto sat by the window, forehead against the cool glass, watching the dark countryside blur past. Miya sat across from him, sword resting between her knees, eyes closed but not sleeping. Yuki sprawled in the seat beside her, hood up, earbuds in—though Haruto knew he wasn't listening to music. He was listening to the heartbeat.

It had come again—twice in the last hour.

Stronger each time.

Not painful.

Just insistent.

**[System Log – Internal Monitoring]**

**[Nox Core Integration: 2.4% → 2.8% in last 45 minutes.]**

**[Awakening Probability: 37% (rising). Estimated full manifestation: 36–48 hours.]**

**[Suppression Option: Available. Current stack: 1/3. Next suppression cost: -20% all stats for 24 hours. Stack risk: moderate.]**

Haruto hadn't suppressed again.

The first use had already shaved 15% off his stats—enough that he felt it in every movement. Another would drop him to 65–70% capacity. A third… permanent damage.

He couldn't afford that yet.

Miya opened her eyes.

"You're fighting it right now. I can see it."

Haruto didn't deny it.

"It's talking. Not words. Just… pressure. Like it's testing the cage."

Yuki pulled out one earbud.

"Visions?"

Haruto nodded.

"Fragments. The Purge. My sister. But now… it's showing me futures. What happens if it wakes. Cities burning. Gates everywhere. Me… standing in the middle. Smiling."

Miya's grip tightened on her sword.

"That's not you."

Haruto met her gaze.

"It could be. If I lose control."

Yuki leaned forward.

"Then don't lose it."

Haruto's laugh was short, bitter.

"Easier said."

The train rattled over a bridge.

Haruto felt it again—the heartbeat.

Faster.

Deeper.

He stood abruptly.

"I need air."

He walked to the end of the car—empty observation deck. The door slid shut behind him.

He gripped the railing.

The heartbeat pulsed—once, twice.

Then a voice.

Not the divine one.

Nox.

Soft. Almost intimate.

"You can't run from me, little warrior. I am you now. The rage. The power. The part you buried when you chose 'guardian.'"

Haruto's knuckles whitened.

"You're a parasite."

Nox's laugh echoed inside his skull.

"I'm the truth. The Purge wasn't evil. It was necessary. Weakness dies. Strength endures. You were the strongest. And you still are."

The heartbeat quickened.

Haruto felt pressure behind his eyes—purple light flickering at the edges of his vision.

**[Warning: Nox Core attempting partial manifestation. Control threshold dropping: 98.7%.]**

He slammed his fist against the railing—metal dented.

"Get out."

Nox's voice softened—almost sad.

"You can't kill me without killing yourself. But you can let me in. Embrace me. Become what you were always meant to be. Sovereign. Eternal. Unbreakable."

Haruto's breathing grew ragged.

The purple light in his eyes flared—briefly.

Then faded.

He forced it down.

**[Suppression Activated: Stack 2/3. All stats -20% for 24 hours.]**

The heartbeat slowed—reluctantly.

Nox's voice retreated—faint, amused.

"Delay. Always delay. But delay ends."

Haruto leaned against the railing, breathing hard.

The door slid open.

Miya and Yuki stood there.

They didn't ask.

They just stood beside him.

Miya placed a hand on his back—lightning soft, warm.

Yuki leaned on the other side—ice cool, steady.

Haruto straightened.

"I saw him. Heard him. He's closer."

Miya's voice was steel.

"Then we get to Kyoto faster. Find the seal. End this."

Yuki cracked his neck.

"Or we wake him early. Fight him on our terms. While he's still weak."

Haruto looked at them—really looked.

He nodded.

"Kyoto. Tonight."

The train announcement came—next stop in 12 minutes.

They returned to their seats.

Haruto sat between them.

No words needed.

The heartbeat was still there.

But now it had two more hearts beside it.

Beating in defiance.

The train sped toward Kyoto.

The final choice waited.

And the Sovereign Guardian refused to fall.
