Chapter 22 - the end

Jay was on the floor, back against the couch, laptop open, hair in a loose mess.

Keifer walked in quietly and stopped.

Just stood there.

Watching her.

"You're staring," she said without looking up.

He smiled.

"I still find it strange that you look… peaceful."

She finally lifted her eyes.

"Do I?"

He nodded.

"You don't carry your shoulders like you're waiting for someone to correct you."

Jay blinked.

That hit.

She closed the laptop and held her hand out.

He took it immediately.

She pulled him down beside her.

No elegance.

Just closeness.

"I used to think marriage would make my life smaller," she whispered.

He leaned his forehead against hers.

"And now?"

Jay smiled.

"It gave me space."

Keifer kissed her once.

Slow.

Familiar.

Home.

They stayed there on the floor for a long time.

Not talking.

Not planning.

Not fixing.

Just two people who accidentally built a life…

and were finally relaxed enough to live in it.
