Chapter 14

Words That Couldn't Be Taken Back

Twinkle didn't sleep that night.

Anger kept her awake—sharp, restless, convincing.

She replayed Najma's silence again and again, twisting it into proof that she had been right.

She never fights for anything, Twinkle told herself.

That means she doesn't care enough.

By morning, the anger felt solid.

Justified.

At breakfast, Najma's seat was empty.

Saraswati noticed immediately. "Has she eaten?"

Twinkle didn't look up. "She said she had work."

A lie.

But one that slid easily from her tongue.

Ranveer's gaze lifted sharply. "She left early?"

Twinkle shrugged. "She does that."

Najma's absence felt louder than her presence ever had.

At college, Twinkle found herself distracted.

Her friends laughed around her, but the sound felt hollow.

"You okay?" one of them asked.

Twinkle forced a smile. "Fine."

But when she checked her phone—no messages.

No missed calls.

A small unease crept in.

She'll come back, Twinkle told herself. She always does.

That afternoon, Rachel appeared again—effortless, composed.

"You look tired," Rachel observed.

Twinkle sighed. "Family drama."

Rachel smiled sympathetically. "These things hurt more when the other person doesn't fight to stay."

The words struck something raw.

Twinkle swallowed. "She left."

Rachel's eyes flickered with satisfaction before softening. "Maybe it's for the best. People who walk away so easily… they usually do it again."

Twinkle nodded slowly.

But her chest tightened.

Because Najma had never walked away before.

That evening, the house felt wrong.

Too quiet.

Najma's room remained untouched.

Ranveer stood outside it longer than necessary.

"She hasn't returned," he said finally.

Twinkle snapped, "She wanted space!"

He turned to her sharply. "She wouldn't leave without telling someone."

Twinkle's heart skipped.

For the first time, doubt cracked through her anger.

That night, Twinkle sat alone on her bed.

She typed a message.

Come back.

Deleted it.

Typed again.

I didn't mean it.

Deleted.

The anger drained, leaving fear behind.

What if Najma took her words seriously?

What if she didn't come back?

Twinkle curled into herself, her breath uneven.

For the first time since the fight, she whispered the truth into the dark:

"I shouldn't have said that."
