The basement was cold, damp, and smelled of fear.
Outside the heavy iron door, the **Iron-Eater Kudzu** was hammering against the metal.
*BOOM.*
The door buckled inward. A dent the size of a fist appeared in the center.
"It is strong," Ren whispered, gripping his sword so hard his knuckles were white. "It hits harder than an ogre. And it has no neck to cut."
"It's hydraulic pressure," Taylor muttered, her eyes scanning the room. "Plants grow by pumping water into their cells. That thing is pressurized like a steam boiler. If we pop it, it won't bleed—it will explode."
[System Message: Correct. Turgor pressure in magical plants can exceed 500 PSI. Basically, you are fighting a high-pressure fire hose that wants to strangle you.]
"We need to dehydrate it," Taylor said, looking at the sacks stacked in the corner. "We need to suck the water out."
She pointed to the white sacks labeled **'Quicklime'**.
"Luna! Grab the buckets! Fill them with water from the emergency barrel!"
"Water?" Luna cried, grabbing a rusty bucket. "But you said it drinks water! Won't that make it stronger?"
"Not this time," Taylor grinned. It was a terrifying, manic grin. "This is chemistry, Luna. **Calcium Oxide** plus **Water** creates an exothermic reaction. It doesn't just get wet. It boils."

**[The Breach]**
*CREAAAK.*
The iron door finally gave way. The hinges snapped like twigs.
The door fell inward with a deafening crash.
Through the dust, a massive, writhing wall of green vines poured into the room. It looked like a tidal wave of snakes. The vines were thick, pulsating with purple veins, and covered in thorns the size of daggers.
"It is here!" Ria screamed, brandishing her frying pan. "Back, you over-cooked salad! I have salt!"
She threw a handful of table salt at the massive plant monster.
The vine recoiled slightly, but then surged forward, seemingly annoyed. A tendril lashed out, knocking the frying pan from Ria's hand.
"My pan!" Ria gasped. "That was seasoned cast iron!"
"Ren!" Taylor shouted. "The sacks! Now!"
Ren didn't ask questions. He grabbed two 50-pound sacks of Quicklime.
"Heavy Lifting Style: Boulder Toss!"
Ren hurled the sacks. They sailed through the air, spinning end-over-end.
They hit the mass of vines in the doorway.
*POOF.*
The sacks burst open. White powder exploded everywhere, coating the wet, slimy vines in a thick layer of Calcium Oxide dust.
The plant paused. It didn't have lungs, so it didn't cough, but it seemed confused by the dry powder coating its skin.
"Now, Luna! The water!"
Luna squeezed her eyes shut and threw the bucket of water directly onto the powder-covered vines.

[The Reaction]
Time seemed to slow down.
The water hit the Quicklime.
**CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + Heat**
*FSSSSSHHHHHH.*
It wasn't a fire. It was a chemical scream.
The reaction was instant and violent. The mixture flashed into steam. The temperature spiked to over **150°C (300°F)** in seconds.
The water inside the plant's cells boiled instantly.
The vines didn't just burn; they ruptured.
*POP. POP. POP. SQUELCH.*
Massive blisters appeared on the plant's "skin" as the steam expanded inside it. The Quicklime turned into a caustic, boiling sludge that ate through the cellulose like acid.
The Kudzu thrashed wildly. It slammed against the walls, trying to scrape off the burning white sludge, but that only smeared it deeper into the wounds.
"It burns!" Ren cheered, shielding his eyes from the steam. "The white dust is magic fire!"
"It's not magic!" Taylor yelled over the hissing sound. "It's Thermodynamics! Keep throwing!"
Ren grabbed another sack. Ria grabbed a bucket.
They established a rhythm.
*Dust. Water. Sizzle.*
*Dust. Water. Scream.*
The basement filled with white steam and the smell of cooked spinach.
Violet stood calmly in the corner, watching the plant die.
"It smells like soup," Violet whispered. "Bad soup."

[The Retreat]
The Iron-Eater Vine couldn't take it. The chemical burn was destroying its cellular structure faster than it could regenerate.
With a final, gurgling shudder, the massive main vine recoiled. It slithered backward out of the doorway, leaving behind a trail of sizzling purple goo and dead, grey plant matter.
The hallway outside fell silent, save for the dripping of the caustic sludge.
"It retreated," Taylor panted, leaning against a crate. She wiped sweat (and lime dust) from her forehead. "We won. For now."

**[The Pain Shared]**
Miles away, in the charred ruins of his garden, **Viscount Valerius** fell to his knees.
"ARGH!"
He clutched his left arm—the wooden, rot-infested arm hidden beneath his suit.
Smoke was rising from his own skin. Massive, red blisters were forming on his wooden flesh, mirroring the burns Taylor had inflicted on the vine.
"She..." Valerius gasped, his eyes wide with shock and pain. "She burned *me*."
His connection to the Kudzu was symbiotic. He felt what it felt.
He looked at the blisters bubbling on his arm. The pain was excruciating. It felt like someone had poured molten lead into his veins.
But then... Valerius started to laugh.
"It hurts!" he wheezed, staring at the burns with a twisted fascination. "It hurts so much! It is... exquisite!"
He stood up, swaying.
"No one has been able to hurt me for ten years," Valerius whispered, a dark smile spreading across his face. "My skin is wood. My blood is sap. I am numb. I am always numb."
He licked a drop of sap that was leaking from a blister.
"But she made me feel."
He looked toward Oakhaven, his eyes glowing with a terrifying green light.
"She isn't just a pest," Valerius declared. "She is a Rival. A true Rival."
He turned to his Bark-Captain.
"Captain. Prepare the **Spore Cannons**."
"My Lord?" The Captain trembled. "But the wind... it will carry the spores to the villages!"
"Let them breathe!" Valerius shouted, spreading his burning arms. "If she wants to play with chemistry... I will show her the true power of Biology. I will turn her precious concrete fortress into a petri dish!"

**[The Aftermath]**
Back in the basement, the steam was clearing.
"Is it dead?" Luna asked, poking a piece of severed vine with a broom handle. The vine twitched, and Luna shrieked, jumping into Ren's arms.
"It is dormant," Taylor said, examining the wreckage. "We hurt it. Badly. But Valerius won't stop."
She looked at the Quicklime sacks. They were almost empty.
"We need a permanent solution," Taylor said. "We can't just fight it off. We need to kill the root."
She pulled out her notebook. Her hands were covered in white dust.
"We need **Agent Orange**," she muttered again. "2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. But I don't have the petroleum byproducts to synthesize it."
**[System Message: You don't need petroleum. You have access to vinegar (Acetic Acid), Chlorine (from Salt electrolysis), and Phenol (from coal tar). You can make a primitive herbicide. It won't be Agent Orange, but it will be 'Agent Angry'.]**
"Agent Angry," Taylor smirked. "I like it."
She looked at her team. They were covered in dust, sweat, and vegetable goo.
"Ren, Ria, Violet, Luna," Taylor said softly. "You did good. We defended the castle."
"We made soup," Ria corrected, looking sadly at the inedible sludge.
"We survived," Taylor corrected.
Suddenly, a small, black beetle crawled out from under a rock. It had a tiny piece of paper tied to its leg.
It was a message from **The Professor**.
Taylor untied it.
> I saw the steam from my tower. Very clever. Exothermic reaction. Crude, but effective.
>
> But be warned. Valerius has Spore Cannons. If you don't seal your ventilation, you will all be mushrooms by morning.
>
> P.S. I stole your toaster while you were in the basement. It was ugly.
"HE STOLE MY TOASTER?!" Taylor screamed, throwing the note on the floor.
