Chapter 48 - Settling In

She found the library at four in the afternoon by accident.

She'd been exploring....trying to map the parts of the estate she was apparently allowed access to, which turned out to be most of it....and pushed open a door at the end of the east corridor expecting another sitting room.

The library was two floors tall. Dark wood shelves from floor to ceiling, a mezzanine level accessible by a wrought iron spiral staircase, a fireplace large enough to stand in. Long reading tables. Deep armchairs. The smell of old books and cedar that she associated with Nicholas so strongly she stopped in the doorway.

"You can come in."

She looked up.

Lucian was on the mezzanine level, leaning on the railing looking down at her, a book open in one hand and a completely unsurprised expression on his face.

"Were you following me," she said.

"I live here." His golden eyes were bright with amusement. "Were you lost?"

"Exploring."
