"He's right," Killian said. "It's a crowd. Not a handful."
Erik joined him at the window, and Penelope a beat later, all three of them watching the mass of shapes stumbling down the street from the direction of the intersection they'd crossed earlier — dozens, moving with the loose, directionless hunger of something drawn by every scream and every car alarm the city had produced over the last several hours, all of it finally converging on the one stretch of noise still active enough to notice.
"We need to move now," Erik said. "Back exit."
They found it fast — a service door near the pharmacy counter, propped by a fire extinguisher the same way half the doors in the condominium had been in the early days of this. Kai and Ben were already circling wide around the side of the building when the group spilled out into the narrow alley behind it, the growling from the street swelling louder behind them with every second.
