Seasoned With Love
Season 4 – Episode 3: "First Day Downstairs"
Amara's POV
The baby had been staring at the ceiling fan for ten minutes.
Completely fascinated.
I leaned back on the couch upstairs holding my coffee with one hand and the baby with the other.
"You know," I told him quietly, "there's a whole restaurant downstairs that would love to meet you."
He blinked slowly.
No opinion.
Just then Marcus's voice drifted faintly up through the floor.
"Carl! If you tighten that any more the door will open into another dimension!"
Carl's voice followed.
"It's called fixing it properly!"
I smiled.
The restaurant was alive already.
Lunch rush was starting.
The baby made a tiny noise and stretched his arms.
"You want to go see?" I asked him softly.
A small kick of his legs answered.
"Okay," I laughed. "I'm taking that as a yes."
I carefully wrapped him in a soft blanket and lifted him into my arms.
"First trip downstairs."
The stairs creaked as I walked slowly down.
Halfway down Marcus spotted me.
His eyes went wide.
"Oh my—"
He ran toward the stairs dramatically.
"THE BABY IS ENTERING THE RESTAURANT!"
Every head turned.
Rose sighed from behind the counter.
"Marcus, stop announcing things like that."
But she was already smiling.
Carl wiped his hands on a towel and walked over.
"Well look who decided to join us."
I stepped onto the floor and the restaurant seemed to soften for a moment.
Customers glanced over.
Some smiled warmly.
Marcus crouched down immediately like a sports commentator.
"And here we see the youngest member of the restaurant family making his official debut."
Rose nudged him.
"Let Amara breathe."
Marcus whispered,
"Sorry."
Luke walked out of the kitchen just then carrying a plate.
He stopped the moment he saw us.
"You brought him down."
I nodded.
"Thought it was time."
Luke set the plate down and came closer.
The baby blinked up at him.
Marcus whispered dramatically,
"Eye contact again."
Rose rolled her eyes.
Carl leaned over slightly.
"He's calm."
"He likes the noise," I said.
The restaurant hum surrounded us.
Plates clinking.
People talking.
The sound of cooking from the kitchen.
Marcus pointed proudly.
"Future chef instincts."
Rose shook her head.
"He's three months old."
Marcus shrugged.
"Early development."
A customer near the window stood and walked over slowly.
An older woman with kind eyes.
"I hope you don't mind," she said gently. "I just wanted to say hello."
I smiled.
"Of course."
She leaned closer and smiled at the baby.
"Well aren't you precious."
The baby stared at her.
Marcus whispered,
"He's evaluating."
Rose elbowed him again.
"Stop narrating."
The woman laughed softly.
"This restaurant has such a warm feeling."
Carl nodded.
"That's the goal."
She looked at Luke.
"You built something special here."
Luke glanced around the room.
"We all did."
The woman returned to her table.
Marcus suddenly clapped once.
"Okay!"
Everyone looked at him.
"We need a baby chair."
Rose frowned.
"For a three-month-old?"
Marcus nodded seriously.
"Planning ahead."
Carl chuckled.
"I'll build one."
Rose looked at him.
"You're encouraging him."
Carl shrugged.
"It's a good project."
The baby suddenly made a loud squeaky sound.
Marcus gasped.
"There it is!"
Rose laughed.
"He likes it here."
I looked down at him.
He really did seem calm.
Almost curious.
Luke leaned slightly closer.
"He's listening."
Marcus nodded.
"Learning the sounds of a restaurant."
Carl added,
"Best classroom in the city."
Just then something unexpected happened.
The baby let out a tiny laugh.
A real one.
Small but clear.
The entire table froze.
Marcus pointed dramatically.
"DID YOU HEAR THAT?!"
Rose's eyes widened.
"That was a laugh."
Carl smiled.
"Well I'll be."
I felt my heart melt a little.
Luke looked genuinely surprised.
"He likes it here."
Marcus straightened proudly.
"Of course he does. We have excellent ambiance."
A few nearby customers started clapping softly.
The baby blinked at the sound.
Marcus waved.
"Don't encourage him, people!"
Rose shook her head laughing.
"This place is turning into a family sitcom."
Carl looked at Luke thoughtfully.
"You realize something."
"What?" Luke asked.
"This kid is going to grow up thinking restaurants are normal life."
Marcus nodded.
"Which they should be."
Rose crossed her arms.
"He'll probably know how to run a kitchen before kindergarten."
I smiled.
That idea didn't feel scary anymore.
It felt warm.
The baby grabbed my finger again.
Marcus leaned closer.
"What's his first word going to be?"
Rose answered instantly.
"Not Marcus."
Carl said,
"Probably food."
Luke thought about it.
Then he smiled slightly.
"Maybe home."
The restaurant buzzed around us again.
Customers talking.
Kitchen working.
Life moving.
But for a moment everything felt peaceful.
Marcus looked around proudly.
"You know what this means."
Rose sighed.
"What now?"
Marcus grinned.
"We officially have the youngest restaurant mascot in the city."
Carl laughed.
Luke shook his head.
But he was smiling.
And as I stood there holding my son in the middle of the restaurant…
I realized something.
This place wasn't just a business anymore.
It was becoming part of his story too.
