Seasoned With Love
Season 3 – Episode 13: "The Cost of Walking Away"
Amara's POV
The cameras were still outside the next morning.
Marcus noticed them before anyone else.
He walked in carrying a tray of bread, stopped in the doorway, and sighed.
"They brought a second van."
Rose looked over the reservation list.
"That means they're planning to stay awhile."
I glanced out the window.
Two news crews now.
A small crowd gathering.
Phones out.
Watching.
The restaurant used to feel like a little corner of the city where life slowed down.
Now it felt like the center of something much bigger.
Luke walked in from the back office just then.
He noticed the reporters immediately.
"They're early."
Marcus laughed once.
"No, man. They're committed."
Rose closed the reservation book.
"The article about the fraud theory spread overnight."
Luke nodded slightly.
"I expected that."
I looked at him.
"You slept?"
"A little."
Marcus shook his head.
"You're too calm."
Luke gave a small shrug.
"Panic doesn't help."
Rose was about to respond when the door opened.
And the room changed again.
This time the person walking in wasn't wearing a suit.
He looked tired.
Older.
Work jacket.
Hands rough from years of labor.
He stopped just inside the door.
And stared directly at Luke.
Marcus whispered,
"This doesn't look good."
Rose nodded quietly.
"No… it doesn't."
The man walked forward slowly.
"Luke Bennett."
Luke stepped toward him.
"Yes."
The man's voice carried anger.
"You remember me?"
Luke studied him carefully.
And then recognition crossed his face.
"Yes."
Marcus looked between them.
"You two know each other?"
The man laughed bitterly.
"Oh yeah. He knows me."
I stepped closer to Luke.
"What's going on?"
The man looked at me.
"You must be the restaurant owner."
I nodded cautiously.
"Yes."
He gestured toward Luke.
"This man ruined my life."
The room fell silent.
Marcus blinked.
"Okay… that escalated quickly."
Rose spoke gently.
"Sir, maybe we should sit down and talk—"
"I've been talking for years," the man interrupted.
He pointed at Luke.
"Ask him what happened to the construction crews after that deal collapsed."
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Luke.
"Luke?"
Luke's voice was calm but heavy.
"His name is Carl."
Carl laughed again.
"Nice to know you remember something."
Marcus looked uncomfortable now.
"What happened?"
Carl answered for him.
"When he walked away from that project… the whole thing collapsed."
Luke didn't interrupt.
Carl continued.
"Hundreds of workers lost jobs overnight."
Rose frowned.
"That wasn't his fault."
Carl shook his head.
"It was his signature that stopped the project."
Luke finally spoke.
"Yes."
Carl looked at him.
"So you admit it."
"Yes."
The honesty caught everyone off guard.
Marcus whispered,
"He's not even defending himself."
I stepped closer to Luke.
"You said the deal was corrupt."
"It was."
Carl shook his head angrily.
"Maybe. But the project paid our bills."
Luke looked directly at him.
"I know."
Carl's voice rose.
"My company shut down two months later."
Marcus muttered under his breath.
"Man…"
Carl pointed at Luke again.
"You walked away with your fancy career intact."
Luke shook his head.
"No."
Carl frowned.
"What?"
"I lost my position."
Carl blinked.
"What?"
Luke explained calmly.
"The board forced me out."
Carl looked confused now.
"They did?"
"Yes."
Rose nodded quietly.
"That part's true."
Carl lowered his hand slowly.
"You're saying you lost your career too?"
Luke answered simply.
"Yes."
Marcus whispered,
"Well that's new information."
Carl looked unsure now.
But before the moment could settle—
The restaurant door opened again.
And the atmosphere shifted immediately.
Evan walked in.
Perfect suit.
Perfect timing.
Marcus groaned quietly.
"Oh great."
Rose muttered,
"This guy again."
Evan looked around the room with interest.
"Well… this is quite a gathering."
Luke's voice dropped.
"What are you doing here?"
Evan held up a thin folder.
"Finishing a conversation."
Carl looked confused.
"Who are you?"
Evan smiled slightly.
"Someone who worked with Luke."
Marcus whispered,
"I really hate this guy."
Evan placed the folder on the table.
"Inside this folder is documentation from the old project."
Luke's eyes narrowed slightly.
"You shouldn't have that."
Evan shrugged.
"People share things when they're frustrated."
Carl looked between them.
"What's in there?"
Evan looked at Luke.
"Proof that Luke knew the project would collapse the moment he walked away."
Marcus frowned.
"Wait… what?"
Evan opened the folder.
"Emails. Internal projections. Financial risk reports."
Rose stepped forward.
"That doesn't prove wrongdoing."
Evan smiled.
"No."
Then he looked directly at Luke.
"But it proves he knew the consequences."
The room went silent again.
Carl stared at Luke.
"You knew people would lose their jobs?"
Luke answered quietly.
"Yes."
Carl's expression hardened.
"And you still did it."
"Yes."
Marcus ran a hand through his hair.
"This is messy."
Rose spoke carefully.
"Luke also knew the project involved fraud."
Carl looked at her.
"What fraud?"
Evan cut in smoothly.
"Unproven claims."
Luke's eyes sharpened.
"They were proven."
Evan smiled again.
"Not in court."
The tension was thick now.
Carl looked at Luke again.
"So you chose ethics over jobs."
Luke nodded.
"Yes."
Carl shook his head slowly.
"My brother was on that crew."
That sentence landed heavy.
"He lost everything."
Luke didn't argue.
"I'm sorry."
Carl laughed bitterly.
"Sorry doesn't rebuild lives."
I stepped forward.
"But corruption destroys them too."
Carl looked at me.
"And what about the people who were already depending on the project?"
I didn't have an easy answer for that.
Neither did Luke.
Evan watched the whole moment like someone enjoying a chess game.
Then he said quietly,
"This is what happens when idealists make business decisions."
Marcus snapped.
"Or when greedy investors ignore people."
Evan ignored him.
He looked at Luke.
"You could still fix this."
Luke frowned.
"How?"
Evan slid another document across the table.
"Come back."
Marcus shook his head immediately.
"Oh no."
Rose folded her arms.
"You're unbelievable."
Evan continued.
"With Luke's leadership, we could restart projects like that."
Carl looked interested despite himself.
"You're saying the jobs could come back?"
Evan nodded.
"Yes."
Then he looked directly at Luke.
"But only if Luke returns to the company."
The entire restaurant went quiet again.
The offer hung in the air.
Luke stood still.
Carl looked at him.
"If that's true… why wouldn't you?"
I looked at Luke too.
Not because I doubted him.
But because I understood the weight of the moment.
Luke looked around the restaurant.
At Marcus.
At Rose.
At me.
Then he looked at Carl.
"I won't rebuild something that harms people."
Carl shook his head.
"So nothing changes."
Luke answered calmly.
"No."
Then he said something that surprised everyone.
"But I will help you find work."
Carl frowned.
"What?"
Luke continued.
"The restaurant expansion project will need contractors soon."
Marcus blinked.
"Oh."
Rose smiled slightly.
"That's actually brilliant."
Carl looked uncertain.
"You'd hire me?"
"Yes."
Carl looked at Evan.
Then back at Luke.
Evan didn't look pleased.
Not at all.
Carl finally nodded slowly.
"We'll talk."
Then he walked out.
The restaurant fell quiet again.
Evan closed the folder.
"You're still stubborn."
Luke nodded.
"Yes."
Evan picked up the folder.
"This story isn't finished."
Luke met his gaze.
"I know."
Evan left.
Marcus exhaled loudly.
"Well."
Rose nodded.
"That just happened."
I looked at Luke.
"You okay?"
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
But outside the window…
The cameras were still there.
And now the story was bigger than ever.
