Chapter 44 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 3 – Episode 8: "Who's Watching"

Amara's POV

The restaurant looked different when cameras were inside it.

Not bad.

Just… louder.

Even before the interview started.

The lighting crew moved equipment around the dining room while Marcus stood nearby pretending he wasn't nervous.

He was absolutely nervous.

"I don't like all these wires," he muttered.

Rose adjusted the front tables so the background looked perfect.

"This is free publicity," she said. "Relax."

Marcus shook his head.

"If they make Amara look bad, I'm unplugging something."

I laughed softly.

"You are not sabotaging a news station."

Luke walked over to us.

"They'll be professional."

Marcus gave him a look.

"Have you seen the internet?"

Rose smiled.

"Point taken."

I took a breath.

Okay.

This was happening.

The reporter walked over with a friendly smile.

"Alright, we'll be live in about five minutes."

Luke nodded calmly.

"Understood."

The reporter looked at me.

"Are you comfortable doing this standing, or would you prefer sitting?"

Luke answered immediately.

"She can sit."

I nudged him slightly.

"I can stand."

The reporter laughed lightly.

"We can compromise."

Rose whispered behind me,

"Good start."

Marcus leaned closer.

"You look calm."

I whispered back,

"I'm pretending."

Luke quietly said,

"You're doing great."

I smiled a little.

Then the producer counted down.

"Thirty seconds."

The restaurant suddenly felt very still.

Customers watching quietly.

Staff pretending to work while clearly listening.

Luke's hand found mine under the table.

Warm.

Steady.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Good."

SOMEWHERE ELSE

Across the city, in a quiet office high above downtown, a television turned on.

The same interview.

The same broadcast.

A man sat behind a large desk watching the screen carefully.

Daniel stood nearby.

"Yes," Daniel said calmly, "this is the restaurant."

The man didn't respond right away.

He watched Luke on the screen.

Then he spoke.

"That's him."

Daniel nodded.

"He's changed."

The man leaned back in his chair.

"Or maybe he's revealing something we didn't see before."

On the television, the interview began.

BACK AT THE RESTAURANT – LIVE INTERVIEW

The reporter smiled into the camera.

"We're here live at one of the city's fastest-growing restaurants, where community, business, and now a personal story are all intersecting."

She turned toward us.

"With me is Amara Johnson, owner and founder, and Luke Bennett, business partner."

I noticed Luke glance at me quickly.

Partner.

We both let that word stay.

The reporter continued.

"There's been a lot of attention recently surrounding this restaurant — especially after reports about a health scare and questions about expansion."

Luke answered first.

"The reports were exaggerated."

The reporter nodded.

"Can you clarify what happened?"

I spoke calmly.

"I had a brief moment of dizziness during a busy lunch service. It happens sometimes during pregnancy."

The reporter smiled slightly.

"So you are expecting?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

The camera zoomed slightly closer.

"And you're still running the restaurant full-time?"

Luke glanced at me, letting me answer.

I appreciated that.

"Yes," I said. "But I also built a strong team."

Marcus whispered off-camera,

"That's right."

Rose elbowed him.

The reporter continued.

"Some people are wondering whether expanding a business during this time is realistic."

Luke spoke again.

"It is when leadership is strong."

The reporter raised an eyebrow slightly.

"You seem very confident in Amara."

Luke didn't hesitate.

"I am."

The room felt warmer somehow.

Then the reporter asked the question we all knew was coming.

"Luke, you previously worked in a much larger corporate environment. Some people are questioning why you stepped away from that to invest your time and resources here."

The restaurant went quiet.

Even the kitchen stopped moving.

Luke stayed calm.

"I didn't step away from something valuable."

The reporter tilted her head.

"So why make the shift?"

Luke looked around the restaurant.

At the staff.

At the customers.

Then back at the camera.

"Because this matters."

Simple.

Clear.

Honest.

And somewhere across the city…

Someone watching leaned forward slightly.

BACK IN THE OFFICE WATCHING

The man watching the broadcast smiled faintly.

Daniel noticed.

"You weren't expecting that answer."

"No," the man said. "But I respect it."

He continued watching.

Carefully.

Interested now.

"Keep an eye on this," he told Daniel.

Daniel nodded.

"I already am."

BACK AT THE INTERVIEW

The reporter turned back to me.

"Amara, last question. With everything happening — the business growth, the public attention, the baby on the way — what keeps you confident moving forward?"

I looked at Luke.

Then at the restaurant.

Then back at the camera.

"What keeps me confident," I said slowly, "is that we're building something real. Not just a restaurant. A place where people get second chances."

Marcus nodded behind the camera.

Rose smiled quietly.

"And we're doing it together," I finished.

The reporter smiled.

"Thank you both for speaking with us today."

The camera light clicked off.

And just like that…

It was done.

But something told me the story was just getting bigger.

Luke exhaled slowly beside me.

"You did great."

"You did too."

Marcus ran over.

"That was actually amazing."

Rose nodded.

"You handled that perfectly."

Luke looked toward the camera crew packing up.

But I noticed something else.

His mind was somewhere else.

Thinking.

Watching.

Like he could feel something shifting.

And somewhere across the city…

Someone powerful had just taken interest.
