Chapter 4 - Seasoned With Love

Episode 7– The Test

Setting:

Late evening at the restaurant. Chairs are up. Lights are low. Only the hum of the fridge and the clink of a mug.

Characters: Luke and Rose

Rose (pouring coffee, not looking at him):

You've been coming by a lot lately.

Luke (shrugs):

I eat every day.

Rose (finally looks at him):

You don't stay every day.

(A beat. Luke knows she's right.)

Luke:

I'm trying not to rush things.

Rose:

That's new.

(Not said cruelly. Just… factual.)

Luke (soft chuckle):

Yeah. I used to think showing up loud meant I cared.

Rose:

And now?

Luke:Now I'm learning showing up quiet means more.

(Rose studies him. This isn't the Luke she remembers.)

Rose:

Amara didn't ask you to change.

Luke:

I know.

(beat)

That's why it counts.

(The door opens slightly. Diane's voice echoes from the back, then fades. Life keeps moving.)

Rose:

You know she turned down an investor today.

Luke (surprised):

She did?

Rose:

They wanted control. Her recipes. Her name.

Luke:

That would've fixed a lot.

Rose:

It would've cost everything.

(Luke nods slowly. Then—)

Luke:

That investor…

(hesitates)

They reached out to me too.

(The room changes temperature.)

Rose:

And?

Luke:

They offered me a position. Quiet partner. No risk.

(swallows)

But it would mean convincing Amara to sign later. When she's tired.

(Rose sets the mug down hard.)

Rose:

So this is the test.

Luke (firm now):

I already answered.

Rose:

You didn't take it?

Luke:

I told them no. And I told them not to come back.

(Rose exhales. Long.)

Rose:

You'd be giving up security.

Luke:

I've had security.

(looks toward the kitchen)

It never taught me how to stay.

(Silence. Then Rose nods — once.)

Rose:

If you break her trust—

Luke:

—I won't ask for forgiveness. I'll accept the consequence.

(Rose allows a small smile.)

Rose:

You're changing.

Luke: I'm choosing. Light dim.

End scene.

Episode 8

What She Learns

INT. RESTAURANT – AFTERNOON

Busy. Controlled chaos.

AMARA moves between stations. Focused. Sharp.

DIANE enters from the front, holding a folded paper. Not gossiping — unsettled.

DIANE

You got a minute?

AMARA (without stopping)

Make it two sentences.

Diane hands her the paper.

DIANE

Investor proposal.

The one you turned down.

Amara pauses.

Takes it.

AMARA

Why do you have this?

DIANE

Because they came back.

Not for you.

(Beat.)

AMARA

For who?

DIANE

Luke.

The name hangs in the air.

The kitchen noise fades for Amara.

AMARA

What do they want with him?

DIANE

They wanted him to talk you into signing later.

Quietly.

Amara's jaw tightens.

AMARA

And he did?

DIANE

No.

He shut them down. Told them not to step foot in here again.

(Amara says nothing.)

DIANE (gentler now)

He didn't tell you.

AMARA

No.

DIANE

That's why I'm telling you.

Amara folds the paper carefully. Too carefully.

AMARA

Thank you.

Diane lingers.

DIANE

You don't owe him anything.

AMARA

I know.

But her eyes say something else.

LATER

The restaurant empties.

Amara stands alone near the prep table.

Rose enters quietly.

ROSE

Diane told you.

Amara nods.

AMARA

He could've had everything easier.

ROSE

Yes.

AMARA

And he said no…

(beat)

without telling me.

ROSE

That's the part that matters.

Amara exhales.

AMARA

I don't know what to do with that.

ROSE

You don't have to do anything.

(A pause.)

ROSE

But you should notice it.

Amara nods slowly.

TAG

Luke stands outside the restaurant that night.

Doesn't come in.

Just looks through the window.

Sees Amara laughing at something Rose says.

He turns away.

Not punished.

Not rewarded.

Just… steady.

FADE out

End scene.

Episode 9 – Her Step

INT. RESTAURANT – LATE NIGHT

Closed.

Lights low. Chairs stacked.

AMARA wipes the counter slower than she needs to.

The front door clicks.

LUKE steps in — surprised to see her still there.

LUKE

I didn't know you were open.

AMARA

I'm not.

(Beat.)

LUKE

Then I'll—

AMARA

Sit.

He does.

Not hopeful. Not guarded. Just present.

A QUIET TABLE

Amara brings two cups of tea. Sets one in front of him.

LUKE

You didn't have to.

AMARA

I know.

(That matters.)

She sits across from him.

Not close. Not far.

AMARA

Diane told me about the investor.

Luke stiffens — just slightly.

LUKE

She did.

AMARA

You didn't say anything.

LUKE

Wasn't my story to tell.

Amara studies him.

AMARA

You could've made my life easier.

LUKE

I could've made it smaller.

(That lands.)

THE CHOICE

AMARA

I've spent a long time protecting this place.

Protecting myself.

LUKE

You're good at it.

AMARA

Too good sometimes.

(She exhales.)

AMARA

I'm not asking you to fix anything.

LUKE

Good. I'm terrible at fixing.

A ghost of a smile.

AMARA

I'm asking if you can stand next to me…

without leaning.

Luke meets her eyes.

LUKE

I can stand.

(No promises. Just truth.)

HER STEP

Amara reaches across the table.

Doesn't grab his hand.

Just rests her fingers near his.

AMARA

Then I'm willing to try.

Slow.

Luke nods.

LUKE

I don't move fast anymore.

AMARA

I know.

(That's trust.)

ENDING BEAT

They sit there.

Two people choosing presence over certainty.

Outside, the streetlight flickers.

Inside, something steady begins.

FADE OUT.

Episode 10 – "Under the Same Roof"

INT. RESTAURANT – FRIDAY NIGHT

Packed.

Too packed.

Tickets stack faster than hands can move.

AMARA is at the line — calm, sharp, controlled.

LUKE is by the prep table, sleeves rolled up. Not in charge. Not in the way.

DIANE moves between front and back like a bridge holding weight.

THE PRESSURE STARTS

DIANE

We're out of the short ribs.

Amara doesn't panic.

AMARA

Then we're out.

Luke glances at the tickets.

LUKE

You sure?

Amara meets his eyes.

AMARA

I don't stretch food.

I stretch people.

Luke nods. No argument.

That's test number one.

A PROBLEM MONEY CAN'T FIX

A CUSTOMER'S VOICE rises from the front. Not angry — disappointed.

Diane leans in.

DIANE

Table six says they drove two hours for that dish.

Amara exhales slowly.

AMARA

I won't lie to them.

Luke steps forward — carefully.

LUKE

Let me talk to them.

Amara considers. Then—

AMARA

Tell the truth.

And don't promise anything I can't deliver.

LUKE

I won't.

He goes.

That's test number two: trust without control.

BACK IN THE KITCHEN

Rose watches quietly from the doorway.

Doesn't intervene.

Just observes.

ROSE

You're letting him help.

Amara doesn't look up.

AMARA

I'm letting him stand where he fits.

Rose nods. Approval without praise.

THE RETURN

Luke comes back.

LUKE

They stayed.

Said honesty tasted better than disappointment.

Amara allows herself one small breath.

AMARA

Good.

Then—

The oven cuts out.

Silence where heat should be.

Everyone freezes.

THE REAL TEST

DIANE

Please tell me that didn't just happen.

Luke checks it.

LUKE

It did.

Amara thinks fast.

AMARA

We finish what we can.

We don't rush.

We don't panic.

Luke looks at her.

LUKE

Tell me where you need me.

She meets his eyes.

AMARA

Right here.

Doing what I say — and telling me if I miss something.

Luke nods.

LUKE

I'm with you.

Not for you. With.

AFTER THE RUSH

Later. Quiet again.

Sweat. Relief. Exhaustion.

They lean against opposite counters.

Not touching. Still connected.

LUKE

You didn't fold.

AMARA

Neither did you.

A beat.

LUKE

We make a decent team.

Amara considers that truth.

AMARA

Tonight we did.

She walks past him.

Stops.

Turns back.

AMARA (CONT'D)

Same rules tomorrow.

Luke smiles — real this time.

LUKE

That's fair.

TAG

Rose watches them from the doorway.

To Diane, quietly:

ROSE

They didn't save each other.

DIANE

No.

ROSE

They stood.

Rose turns off the kitchen light.

FADE OUT.
