Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Whetstone

"He's really running away," Maria noted, watching the sky.

"Indeed. Lord King even transformed into his Pteranodon form just to get away faster," Haruko added with a nod. Even she could tell how flustered King had become.

Yamato watched King's retreating figure and shook her head. "It seems my Second Uncle still has some reservations about his lineage."

"What race is Lord King exactly?" Haruko asked curiously. A man with black wings and a constant cluster of flames on his back hardly seemed like someone from the normal human world.

"He belongs to a nearly extinct race called the Lunarians," Yamato explained, ending the topic. "There's probably not another one left in the whole world. Anyway, let's head out."

Maria and Haruko didn't dwell on the mystery. They turned their attention to the siblings, Ulti and Page One. "Ulti, do you want to come with us?" Maria asked.

"I'm not going anywhere with you guys. I want to be with my favorite Pei-chan!" Ulti shouted. Though she was only in her teens, she was already an incurable brother-con.

"Sis, stop clinging to me," Page One groaned, unable to resist her grip at all.

Looking at the bizarre pair, Yamato laughed. "I never thought I'd actually see a real-life brother-con. Maria, Haruko, let's go." To Yamato, Ulti and Page One were just interesting kids.

The siblings had been following Kaido since they were small children, learning his brutal ways. Because of this, they were actually a bit intimidated by Yamato. They weren't afraid of Kaido at all—especially Ulti, who dared to call the Yonko by his name—but they were wary of Yamato because she had a habit of flicking their foreheads, and that definitely wasn't pleasant.

"Charge, Pei-chan!" Ulti cried out, riding on her little brother's back as they rushed off.

Yamato and the others watched them go with a smile. "What a strange pair of siblings."

On the bustling streets, many residents of Wano Country had gathered, including people from the Flower Capital and various surrounding townships. Yamato looked at the lively scene and sighed inwardly. "It's a pity that this kind of life will inevitably end one day."

Even without the tyranny of Kurozumi Orochi and Kaido, Wano Country would eventually have to open its borders. This would change everything because, beneath the foundations of Wano, lies the Ancient Weapon, Pluton. Once Pluton is activated, the current geography of Wano Country will cease to exist. When that happens, a war sweeping the entire world will arrive.

"Whether it's right or wrong, let history be the judge," Yamato thought, shaking her head. "Since ancient times, the victors have always written history. Besides, if you can't win, history becomes a lie and everything becomes meaningless."

"Yamato, how about this hairpin?" Maria's voice rang out, breaking her train of thought.

Yamato pushed the heavy reflections aside and walked over. "Let me see..."

As time passed, the Beasts Pirates began to develop and expand, preparing for their next major expedition. Before that day arrived, Yamato and Kaido fought every few days. Each encounter was like two bulls locking horns, causing massive destruction.

"Big Brother, Young Master, I can't stop you from fighting," King said, intercepting the father-daughter pair. "But next time, don't do it on the roof. A few more rounds and the whole palace will definitely collapse. Go fight somewhere else."

Wano Country was vast. Aside from the Flower Capital, there was Hakumai, Kibi, Ringo, Kuri, and Udon. No matter how much they trashed those regions, it wouldn't be a problem for the crew. However, if Yamato and Kaido blew up Onigashima, the Beasts Pirates' headquarters would be gone for good.

Kaido was surprisingly cooperative this time, taking Yamato elsewhere to trade blows.

"Big Brother is a brute, and now he's corrupted the Young Master too," King muttered to himself. He used to think both of them were born with issues, but now he realized Kaido was the source of the problem. Yamato never used to be this reckless; she had been influenced by her father's combat-obsessed nature.

Now, the Beasts Pirates had another "little ancestor" to worry about. One month passed... then two... then five... then ten. Before anyone realized it, twenty months had gone by—nearly two years.

On Onigashima, the rhythmic sound of wooden clogs echoed through the halls. Many subordinates looked at the approaching figure with strange expressions. "Is the Young Master here to fight the Governor again?"

It was indeed Yamato. She wore a golden haori and looked radiant, her spirit high. Her Haki was visibly leaking from her body in waves. The powerful aura she radiated made most of the lower-ranking pirates hesitate to even get close to her.

During the past two years, she and Kaido had fought at the drop of a hat, clashing at least thirty or forty times. Thanks to these intense sparring sessions with the "Idiot Old Man," Yamato's Haki level had skyrocketed. It was now reaching a point where it wasn't much weaker than Kaido's own.

Kaido had noticed this trend as well, so he had recently stopped fighting her altogether. After two months without a proper duel, Yamato felt restless, so she went looking for him.

She soon reached the upper level of the fortress. "Hey, Idiot Old Man! Come spar with me. If you don't, your body is going to rust."

Kaido, who was busy drinking, heard the voice of his "Good Eldest Son" and immediately frowned. "That stinky brat... she really dares to use me as her whetstone."

At first, Kaido had been happy to fight Yamato because it gave him an excuse to beat her up. Every time he sent her flying, he felt a sense of joy, finally venting the frustration she caused him. But as her Haki continued to strengthen, it became harder to overpower her easily. He realized she was simply using him to temper her skills.

Once he caught on, Kaido had no intention of playing along anymore, so he started avoiding her. It wasn't that he feared her, but he didn't want to be her training tool, especially since he couldn't bring himself to actually kill her. To make matters worse, Yamato didn't hold back her strikes either. He knew she would try to retaliate for every hit he'd landed in the past, and he wasn't about to give her that chance.

Now, Yamato was like a piece of sticky candy—annoying and impossible to get rid of. Since he couldn't kill her, he decided to just ignore her.

"Idiot Old Man, are you dead? If not, say something," Yamato said, walking into the room.

The sound of her voice alone was enough to irritate him. Couldn't she just let him drink in peace? She was always bothering him, using every trick in the book to pick a fight.

"Yamato, watch your tone with me. I'm your father!" Kaido shouted, clearly displeased.

"You're just an Idiot Old Man, what's so great about that? Never mind the talk, come spar with me," Yamato insisted.

"Get lost! Don't disturb my drinking," Kaido refused without hesitation. Whoever wanted to be her whetstone could go right ahead, but it wasn't going to be him.

"Drink, drink, drink. All you know how to do is drink. Go ahead and drink yourself to death, you Idiot Old Man," Yamato snapped. She could see he was avoiding her on purpose. He definitely knew what she was up to, which explained why he hadn't challenged her lately.

"That's none of your business, you stinky brat. Get out of here and let me drink. Go do whatever else you want," Kaido said, shooing her away with his hand.

"I want to fight, and I need you to cooperate, Old Man," Yamato said with a grin.

Kaido slammed his gourd onto the ground. "Get out! Get out! Get out! And stop grinning at me like that. Don't think for a second I don't know what you're planning."

"You're getting smarter, Idiot Old Man. You reek of alcohol, it's disgusting. I don't even want to stay in this room," Yamato tossed the insult over her shoulder as she turned and walked away.
