Chapter 15 - Echoes Beneath Two Heartbeats

Kael didn't wake peacefully.

He tore back into consciousness like something drowning beneath black water.

Air hit his lungs violently.

Pain followed immediately.

His body convulsed as he rolled onto his side, coughing blood across the cold chamber floor. His chest burned like molten iron had been poured into his veins, every heartbeat striking harder than the last.

One beat belonged to him.

The other did not.

THUMP.

A heavier pulse answered beneath his own.

Ancient.

Monstrous.

Alive.

Kael's fingers dug into the floor as another wave of pain ripped through him. It felt like claws were scraping the inside of his ribs, trying to carve space for themselves.

"…Damn…" he rasped.

"…Fragile."

The beast's voice echoed calmly through his mind.

Closer now.

Not separate.

Inside him.

Kael forced out a dry laugh.

"Yeah? Try sharing a body with me first."

The beast didn't answer.

But he felt it.

Watching.

Measuring.

Learning him.

Kael stared at the glowing blue text through blurred vision.

"…Helpful as always."

He tried to stand.

Pain exploded through his legs instantly.

His body collapsed halfway up, slamming back against the stone floor.

His illness had worsened.

Not hidden anymore.

Not manageable.

The Heartbound contract had stabilized the parasite—

But at a cost.

Now his body was fighting two battles:

The sickness eating him alive…

And the beast forcing itself into his core.

Another cough tore from his throat.

Blood splattered across his sleeve.

Too much.

Far too much.

Even breathing felt difficult now.

"…You are dying faster."

Kael wiped blood from his lips.

"No kidding."

A pause followed.

Then...

"…Weak flesh."

Kael smirked faintly despite the pain.

"Still stronger than your prison chains."

Silence.

Then...

A low rumble echoed through his mind.

Amusement.

The chamber suddenly trembled.

Blue light flickered across Kael's vision.

Not unstable this time.

Focused.

Precise.

Kael blinked slowly.

"…Designation?"

SYSTEM PROMPT

Please assign a name to your Heartbound Beast.

The chamber went quiet.

Even the beast seemed to pause.

Kael let out a slow breath and looked toward the shadowed figure flickering beside him.

Massive.

Ancient.

A creature born from darkness and sealed for reasons the world had probably forgotten.

Its eyes burned like dying stars inside an abyss.

A king of monsters.

A predator older than fear itself.

And now...

Bound to him.

"…You don't have a name?" Kael asked quietly.

The beast's voice echoed slowly.

"…Names are given by lesser beings to control what they fear."

Kael smiled weakly.

"Sounds dramatic."

"…It is truth."

Kael thought for a moment.

Then his gaze sharpened slightly.

"…No."

The beast stilled.

Kael pushed himself halfway upright, breathing heavily.

"You're not just some shadow anymore," he said quietly. "And I'm not your jailer."

The beast watched him carefully.

Kael's eyes darkened slightly.

"You survived chains."

"…You survived being forgotten."

"…You survived becoming a monster."

He smirked faintly.

"So I'll give you a name that survived too."

The darkness around the beast shifted slowly.

Interested.

Waiting.

Kael looked directly into its burning gaze.

"…Veyrath."

Silence filled the chamber.

Then...

The shadows trembled.

The chains around the beast pulsed violently before slowly calming.

"…Veyrath…"

The name rolled through Kael's mind like distant thunder.

Then... "…Acceptable."

Kael laughed weakly.

"That's the nicest thing you've said so far."

Suddenly...

The System flickered violently again.

This time

Different screens appeared.

"Correct."

Kael laughed again.

This time it hurt more.

Blood touched his lips again.

The academy.

Of course.

A place full of elite mages, nobles, gifted prodigies—

And him.

A dying man carrying an ancient shadow monster inside his chest.

Perfect.

"…You should refuse."

Kael looked toward Veyrath.

"And die?"

The beast didn't answer immediately.

Then...

"…You may die there anyway."

Kael pushed himself upright again.

Slower this time.

Painfully.

But he stood.

Barely.

"Then I'll die moving."

The shadows around Veyrath stirred faintly.

Not disagreement.

Not approval.

Something quieter.

Respect.

Kael took a slow breath.

"Astrael Magic Academy…"

The name felt dangerous already.

Like the beginning of something larger than him.

Larger than the estate.

Larger than survival.

And somewhere deep inside...

The System pulsed once more.

HIDDEN CONDITION DETECTED

Tower Resonance Increased

The message vanished instantly.

Too fast to fully read.

But Kael saw enough.

Tower.

Again.

Something was waiting.

Watching.

Preparing.

And somehow..

The academy was connected to it.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Guess I'm going to school."

Veyrath's laughter echoed softly through his mind.

Dark.

Ancient.

Hungry.

"…Try not to die before class begins."

Kael smirked faintly despite the exhaustion.

"No promises."

Far away...

Beyond kingdoms.

Beyond mountains.

Beyond human understanding...

Something massive shifted in the darkness.

A tower beginning to wake.
