Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight: When Shadows Look Away

Kael Ardyn woke to the sound of breathing.

Not his own.

Someone else's.

The faint rustle of fabric. The controlled rhythm of a man who never slept deeply.

Kael kept his eyes closed.

The System's presence hovered quietly at the edge of his mind, alert now watchful.

"External observer detected," it whispered.

Kael already knew who it was.

"Master Kael," Jenkins said softly. "You've been restless."

Kael forced a weak cough and slowly opened his eyes. Morning light filtered through the tall windows, pale and cold.

"How long was I out?" Kael asked.

"Several hours," Jenkins replied. He stood beside the bed, posture immaculate, silver tray in hand. A porcelain vial rested atop it, filled with faintly glowing blue liquid.

"Your stabilizing draught."

Kael stared at it.

In Kael Ardyn's memories, this medicine had been his lifeline.

In Alex's instincts, it felt like a leash.

"Analysis," the System murmured.

"Unknown compound. Long-term effects: inconclusive."

"I'll take it later," Kael said.

Jenkins' fingers tightened...just slightly...around the tray.

"As you wish," he replied after a pause.

But he did not leave.

The silence stretched.

Kael felt it then: pressure. Not mana. Not killing intent.

Observation.

"You watched me die," Kael said quietly.

Jenkins blinked. "Pardon?"

"At the academy," Kael continued, voice weak but steady. "You were there when I fell."

"Jenkins not understanding what was going on"

A lie.

But Jenkins didn't correct him.

"I observe many things," the butler said. "It is my duty."

Kael smiled faintly. "Then observe this."

He swung his legs off the bed and stood.

Pain exploded through his chest. His knees buckled...but he caught himself against the bedframe and sat back down as he still lacks enough strength to move.

Jenkins moved instantly, reaching out.

Kael waved him off.

"I'm alive," Kael said. "That alone changes things."

The System hummed softly.

"Probability fluctuation detected."

Before Jenkins could respond...

A roar shook the mansion.

The walls trembled. Servants screamed somewhere below.

Kael turned toward the window just as a massive shadow passed overhead.

"What was that?" he asked.

The System answered first.

"Dungeon breach detected.

"High-tier hostile entities approaching the estate."

Jenkins' calm cracked.

"Stay here," he ordered sharply, already turning toward the door.

Another roar thundered through the sky.

Kael staggered to the window.

Outside...

A wyvern tore through the clouds, obsidian scales glinting in the sun, wings beating with terrifying force.

And standing in the courtyard below...

Ardyn.

The Shadow Lord.

His father.

Shadows coiled around Ardyn's body like living armor as he raised his sword.

"Begone," Ardyn said calmly.

The wyvern screamed.

Their clash split the sky.

Shadow bindings wrapped around wings. Blades of darkness tore through scale and bone. The air itself screamed under the force of their battle.

Kael watched, breathless.

That's power.

Behind him, Jenkins had already vanished.

The System whispered.

"Opportunity detected."

Kael clenched his fists.

"What opportunity?"

"Primary task window available."

A notification unfolded before his eyes.

SYSTEM TASK: RETRIEVE MOONPETAL

• Location: Northern Forest

• Reward: +10% Physical Strength & Agility

• Time Limit: 3 Days

Kael laughed quietly.

"While the monsters are busy," he murmured.

"Correct."

He grabbed a cloak.

As he slipped through the corridors, the mansion shook again...another roar, this one closer to the ground.

Through a side hall window, Kael glimpsed Jenkins in the distance...dark mist swallowing a corrupted tiger whole.

Efficient.

Terrifying.

Good, Kael thought. Everyone is distracted.

His door opened without resistance.

"Minor fortune rebound," the System noted.

Kael did not walk out of the Ardyn estate.

He escaped it.

The moment he passed beyond the inner corridors, his body began to rebel. His lungs burned as if filled with ash, each breath shallow and incomplete. His heartbeat stuttered...too fast, too weak, like it might simply forget how to continue.

"Warning," the System whispered.

"Body stability declining."

Kael leaned against a marble pillar, gripping it hard enough that his fingers went numb.

Not here.

Servants rushed past the far corridor, their attention fixed on the tremors shaking the estate. Somewhere above, the clash between Ardyn and the wyvern rattled the air itself. Every shockwave sent pain lancing through Kael's bones.

He pushed himself forward.

One step.

Black spots bloomed in his vision.

He staggered, nearly collapsing as a wave of dizziness struck so hard it stole his sense of direction. His knees hit the floor.

Cold stone.

Humiliating.

Kael clenched his teeth and forced himself upright again.

"I won't die in a hallway," he muttered.

The System did not respond.

That silence was worse than any warning.

As he reached the outer wing, the air grew heavier...thick with residual mana and panic. Guards ran toward the courtyard, shouting orders over the roars echoing from the sky.

Kael flattened himself against the wall as a patrol thundered past.

His heart pounded violently.

Every second here increased the chance someone noticed him.

And if Jenkins noticed…

"Probability spike detected," the System whispered suddenly.

Kael didn't wait.

He slipped through a servant passage barely wide enough for one person, shoulders scraping stone. The path sloped downward, uneven and poorly maintained. By the time he reached the final door, his legs were trembling uncontrollably.

He pushed it open.

Cold night air slammed into him.

Kael stumbled out into the outer grounds, barely staying upright. The manicured gardens blurred together as he half-walked, half-fell toward the perimeter.

Each step hurt more than the last.

His chest tightened sharply.

Kael gasped...and collapsed to one knee, coughing violently.

Blood splattered onto the grass.

"Critical condition," the System warned.

"Host death probability rising."

Kael wiped his mouth with his sleeve, staring at the red smear left behind.

"So even walking can kill me," he said hoarsely.

"Correct."

The estate gates loomed ahead.

Massive.

Guarded.

Kael's vision swam as he approached. His presence was insignificant compared to the chaos above...another stroke of terrible, perfect timing.

The guards hesitated when they saw him.

"Master Kael?" one called. "You shouldn't..."

Kael met his eyes.

"I need air," he said quietly.

Something shifted.

The guard swallowed.

"…Open the gate."

Metal groaned.

The gates parted.

Kael crossed the threshold...and nearly collapsed again.

Beyond the estate's protection, the world felt hostile. Mana pressure pressed against his skin. The land itself rejected him.

His legs buckled.

He caught himself on a tree trunk just beyond the road, gasping, vision narrowing to a tunnel.

For a moment, he thought this was where it would end.

Alone.

Unnoticed.

Then..

"Minor fortune rebound," the System said calmly.

A passing shockwave from the distant battle knocked loose a branch above him. It crashed down, breaking his fall and giving him something to cling to.

Kael laughed weakly.

Even now.

Barely.

Using the tree for support, he dragged himself forward...step by shaking step...until the stone paths vanished behind him and the ground softened beneath his feet.

The air changed.

Cooler.

Damp.

Alive.

The forest welcomed him with damp air and shadows.

Each step drained him. His lungs burned. His vision blurred.

But the System guided him, tugging his awareness deeper, toward a faint silver glow.

Moonpetal.

He found it at the base of an ancient tree.

Beautiful.

Lethal.

And not unguarded.

The growl came from behind.

Kael turned just as a mutated bear burst from the underbrush...muscles swollen, veins blackened, eyes glowing with corruption.

His body froze.

Too strong.

The bear charged.

Kael ran.

His legs failed him within seconds. He fell hard, rolling through mud and leaves.

The bear reared back...

And a shadow passed between them.

For half a heartbeat, the beast hesitated.

Not fear.

Confusion.

"Probability anomaly detected," the System whispered.

Kael didn't question it.

He crawled towards the moonpetal.

Reached.

His fingers closed around the Moonpetal.

Pain tore through his back as claws raked him, but he didn't let go.

Using the last of his strength, Kael rolled and kicked upward, catching a low branch. He dragged himself into the tree just as the bear snapped its jaws where his head had been.

He climbed.

Fell.

Climbed again.

The bear roared below, circling, furious.

"Temporary agility boost granted," the System announced.

Kael felt it...his body moving faster than it should.

He leapt.

Branch to branch.

Tree to tree.

Blood soaked his clothes, but the forest edge appeared ahead.

With one final burst of speed, he hurled himself out of the trees and collapsed onto open ground.

The bear stopped at the treeline, snarling.

Kael lay there, shaking, Moonpetal clenched in his hand.

"I survived," he whispered.

"Task complete," the System replied.

"Return to the mansion."

High above the forest...

A shadow watched Kael turn back toward home.

And this time, it smiled.
