What if Pokémon suddenly began appearing in large numbers throughout the city's wilderness?"
Ren asked casually, studying the city map spread across the counter.
The question made Emma pause mid-step.
Lily blinked.
"…Huh?"
Emma's brows slowly furrowed.
"Boss… are you joking?"
Ren didn't look like he was joking. That was the problem.
He had been researching the city's outer districts for days now.
And now this question?
It didn't feel random at all.
Lily, however, reacted completely differently.
"That would be amazing!" she blurted out, eyes shining. "Pokémon everywhere? That sounds incredible!"
Ren smiled faintly. "So you think it's a good thing?"
"Of course!"
"Of course not," Emma cut in sharply before Lily could continue.
Lily turned to her with a wounded look.
Emma ignored her and looked seriously at Ren.
"If Pokémon suddenly appeared in large numbers, people would panic."
Lily froze.
Oh.
Right.
They were already used to Pokémon. They understood that most Pokémon were friendly, even gentle.
But ordinary people didn't know that.
To them, creatures that could summon fire, lightning, and waves with a gesture would look like monsters.
If Pokémon appeared all at once…
There would definitely be chaos.
"And once things escalate," Emma continued, "the government would have to step in. It wouldn't even be about who's right or wrong anymore."
She frowned slightly.
"First impressions matter. If the public develops fear or hostility toward Pokémon from the beginning, it'll be extremely hard to reverse."
Ren nodded.
She was right.
"And there's also the environmental issue," Emma added. "Pokémon consume a lot of food. The outskirts of the city aren't exactly designed to support wild populations."
Ren tapped the counter lightly.
"Those problems can be solved. I already have preliminary plans."
Both girls looked at him.
"What I'm asking," Ren continued, smiling faintly, "is this — if everything could be arranged properly… would you want Pokémon to exist freely in the wild?"
Emma hesitated.
Lily did not.
"Yes!" Lily almost bounced. "That would be the best thing ever!"
Emma bit her lip, thinking carefully.
"…If the risks are handled properly," she said at last, "then yes. It would be wonderful."
Ren's smile deepened.
"If there were wild Pokémon," he said slowly, "people could explore. They could encounter partners in the wild, build bonds, and capture them."
"They could grow stronger together."
"And one day, stand on a competitive stage side by side."
"Isn't that what being a Trainer truly means?"
Emma's eyes widened slightly.
So that's why it's called 'capturing.'
Not just buying.
Not just receiving.
But meeting a Pokémon in the wild… choosing each other.
Lily was practically glowing red from excitement.
"I want that! I really want that! Are wild Pokémon really coming?"
Ren only chuckled.
"Guess."
Lily nearly choked.
"Guess what?!"
Ren raised his hands in surrender.
"It's in preparation. But it'll take time."
He changed the topic smoothly.
"Now then. You two came here to draw Pokémon, didn't you?"
Lily snorted but grabbed the store Pokédex anyway.
"Fine. Watch me pull something amazing."
Ten minutes later.
"…This game is rigged."
Lily handed the device back with a lifeless expression.
Weedle.
Wurmple.
Combee.
Venipede.
Four bug-types in a row.
And the last one?
Oddish.
She stared blankly.
"Boss… is this because someone else pulled a pseudo-legendary earlier and drained my luck?"
Ren looked at her thoughtfully.
"…Miss Lily, I think you're just… naturally unlucky."
"Impossible!"
Ren glanced at Emma.
"Would you like to try once?"
Emma hesitated.
"I already have three Pokémon…"
"Just one try," Lily insisted dramatically.
Emma sighed and pressed the button.
The screen flickered.
The silhouette stabilized.
Emma blinked.
"…What is that?"
It resembled a gentle marine creature with a long neck.
Ren's expression shifted slightly.
"Well. Emma, your luck is very good today."
"It's Lapras."
"Water and Ice type. Excellent temperament, strong in battle, and very intelligent."
Emma stiffened.
"Water type… again?"
Ren nodded calmly.
"But Lapras is special. It doesn't evolve. It's already in its final form."
Emma's eyes widened slightly.
"No evolution… but strong from the start?"
"Exactly."
"And," Ren continued, "a small number of Lapras possess telepathy."
Emma froze.
"Telepathy? Like Diancie?"
"Yes. The ability to communicate across species."
Lily stared in disbelief.
"So she pulls an SR in one try, and I get four bugs?"
Emma clutched the Pokédex excitedly.
"I want this one!"
Lily stood there in silence.
Completely devastated.
Not fair.
Absolutely not fair.
Why was she stuck with "stinky fish and rotten shrimp," while Emma hit a jackpot on the first try?
She forced a dry smile.
"I'm fine."
Inside, however—
She was screaming.
