CHAPTER TWO
The Don's Shadow
The morning sun tried to break through the clouds over Lagos, but the city still smelled of rain, asphalt, and something darker—something that lurked in the shadows of streets no one dared walk alone.
Amina Bello walked quickly, backpack strap tight on her shoulder, heart still racing from the night before. She could not forget him. The way he had stood in the alley, calm, yet so alive with authority. Dante Romano—the name alone carried weight, fear, and an inexplicable pull she couldn't explain.
At school, she tried to act normal, but nothing felt normal anymore. Her friends whispered, glanced at her oddly, and she caught herself flinching every time a shadow moved too fast. The messages had continued—short, coded, careful.
"Stay away from the streets tonight."
"Trust no one."
They made no sense to her, yet deep down, she knew they were connected to him. That thought should have terrified her. Instead, it made her pulse faster.
The Encounter
It was during lunch break, near the school's courtyard, when she saw the black car again. Rain had left the streets wet and glossy, reflecting the sunlight in streaks of gold and gray.
Her stomach tightened. She could feel him before she saw him—the same intensity, the presence that seemed to bend the world around him.
Dante Romano stepped out of the car, impeccably dressed, his gaze sweeping the courtyard until it landed on her. Time slowed. The students around them became a blur.
"You shouldn't be wandering alone," he said, his voice low but audible, carrying authority and concern all at once.
"I'm… fine," she replied, but her words trembled.
"No," he said, stepping closer, his eyes searching hers. "You're not fine. Not when you're in my world."
Amina's chest tightened. His words were not a threat—they were a warning and a promise at the same time.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
They walked together, side by side, though she wasn't sure why she didn't run. There was a strange safety in his presence, even though danger always seemed to cling to him.
"You need to understand something," Dante said, keeping his voice low, almost gentle. "The world I live in… it doesn't forgive mistakes. People like me… we attract trouble. And anyone who matters to us, even a stranger, gets pulled in."
Amina swallowed hard. "Why are you telling me this? Why not… just leave me alone?"
"Because I can't," he said. His eyes softened briefly, almost humanly. "You've seen part of my world. And now… you matter. More than I should allow."
Her heart thumped loudly. The city noises—sirens, cars, the distant chatter—faded into nothing. It was just him, just her, and the tension between them.
"And what happens now?" she whispered.
"Now…" he said, his voice almost a murmur, "we survive. Together. That's all I can promise."
Family's Role
When she returned home, the encounter weighed heavily on her. Her parents noticed immediately.
"Amina," her father said, voice firm but calm, "what's going on? You're not acting like yourself."
She hesitated, then decided honesty was better than hiding it. "I met someone… dangerous. Important. I can't explain everything, but I think he… wants to protect me."
Her mother's eyes softened. "If he respects you, we respect him. But we will always protect you."
That acceptance, though cautious, brought a sense of relief. She realized that the mafia world he lived in, terrifying as it was, might not be completely unreachable. She could navigate it safely—with her family's blessing.
Dante's Perspective
Dante watched from a distance, observing her return to the safety of her home. In his world, rules and logic ruled everything—loyalty, power, survival. But now, a new force had entered his calculations: something fragile and human, yet irresistible.
He had never felt responsibility like this before. Protecting her wasn't about business or reputation. It was personal. Emotional. Dangerous.
And yet, he welcomed it.
Because she was no longer just a witness to his world. She had become a part of it.
And for the first time in decades, Dante Romano found himself willing to bend the rules… for her.
Closing Scene
That night, Lagos glittered under rain-soaked neon lights. The city hummed with life and danger, unaware of the small human drama unfolding in the shadows.
Amina's thoughts drifted to him, to his piercing gaze, to the strange mix of fear and comfort he inspired. She knew the path ahead was dangerous, complicated, and uncertain—but something deep inside told her she would not regret crossing it.
Because some connections… some bonds… could survive even the darkest underworld.
