The lights came back on suddenly, like someone was playing and off games with us. Everything looked bad under that yellow buzz blood everywhere, on the floor, on my shirt, on Jay's face. He was against the wall, trying to sit up but not really making it. His eye was already half shut, purple starting to spread. Tina stood in the doorway, gun in both hands, chest going up and down fast like she'd run the whole way here.
I stayed where I was. Knees on the floor. Side burning. Neck still hot from where Grek's mouth had pressed. I wiped my lip again. More blood on my fingers. Didn't surprise me.
Jay coughed. Sounded wet. Hurt. "Sky?"
I looked over. Couldn't not look. "Yeah. I'm here."
He tried to smile. Blood on his teeth. "Thought maybe I finally killed you by accident."
"Almost," I said. "But you're a bad shot."
He laughed. It turned into a groan right away. "Noted."
