Sky
We started walking. The group was loud up front, kids running ahead, uncles telling bad jokes but Daniel and I fell behind pretty quickly because I kept slowing down on purpose and he wouldn't stop trying to talk.
"Sky, about last night…" he started.
"Nope. Not doing this here."
"You said you wanted out. I get it. But Mom's got us trapped for the next few hours so maybe we just…"
"Just what? Pretend again? Like the trivia and the falling in the dirt wasn't enough humiliation for one weekend?" I sped up but he matched me.
"You're the one who wrote the roof memory on the whiteboard. You remember it too."
"Yeah well I also remember you ghosting me after, so congrats on the selective memory."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I told you why. My Jo.."
"Oh here we go with the job excuse again. Big bad dangerous job so poor little Sky had to be protected. Newsflash, Daniel, I'm not some fragile doll you get to decide stuff for."
