Chapter 20 - He chooses a better future

That night, Zayan didn't sleep.

He lay awake on the thin mattress, staring at the cracked ceiling as if it might answer him. The café owner's words echoed in his head again and again — He's rich… he's kind… he can give you everything you need.

Everything.

That word felt dangerous.

Zayan had learned long ago that everything was a lie people told before they left.

He turned onto his side, his chest tight, his thoughts heavy. What if this was another trap? Another false promise wrapped in kindness? What if the professor was only pretending — just another adult who would eventually get tired of him and throw him away like everyone else had?

His parents' faces haunted him. The way they walked away without looking back. The silence that followed. The emptiness they left behind.

Trust had never saved him before.

All night, his mind fought itself.

If he accepted, he risked losing again.

If he rejected, he stayed trapped in the same darkness.

He thought of Lia.

Of Aryan.

Of his grandmother.

He thought of the future — the one he wanted, and the one he feared he would never reach.

By morning, his eyes burned, and his body felt heavy with exhaustion.

The next day, the professor returned.

Zayan was working behind the counter when he saw him walk in. His heart began to race. The café owner slowed his movements, listening closely, pretending not to care while hearing everything.

The professor sat down and looked at Zayan calmly.

"So," he said, "have you decided?"

Zayan stood there silently for a moment. His hands were trembling, though he tried to hide it. He felt like a cornered animal — wounded, cautious, ready to run.

He didn't answer immediately.

He thought again.

About how easily people promised things.

About how painful hope could be.

About how trusting the wrong person could destroy him completely.

"I can accept," Zayan finally said, his voice quiet.

"But…"

The professor waited.

"I won't call you my father," Zayan continued, swallowing hard. "Not yet. I don't know if I can. I need time."

The café owner watched closely, holding his breath.

The professor didn't look offended. He didn't raise his voice. He only nodded slowly.

"That's fair," he said. "I won't force you."

Zayan felt a small crack form in the wall around his heart — but he didn't let it widen.

"Pack your bags," the professor said gently. "Come with me."

Zayan froze.

This was it.

Leaving meant stepping into the unknown. Staying meant surviving another day of slow decay. His chest tightened painfully as he looked around the café — the place that had drained him, broken him, yet kept him alive.

He stayed silent for a long moment.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

The café owner stepped forward and placed a hand on Zayan's shoulder. "Go," he said quietly. "Don't waste this."

Zayan didn't smile. He didn't thank anyone.

He just walked away — carrying not only his bag, but every fear, every scar, and every unanswered question with him.

He wasn't saved.

Not yet.

He was only stepping into another test — one that could either give him a future… or break him completely.
