Chapter 21 - 21. Fragments Of Us

As they share a final, fleeting glance, a soft smile barely touching the corners of Taesan's lips, Jaewon finally forces himself to look away. The simple expression unsettles him more than anything else that night. It is not the polite smile Taesan shows everyone, not the careful one he uses to smooth things over. This one is quiet and genuine, something unguarded. Something Jaewon has never managed to draw out of him. The realization sinks in slowly, heavy and suffocating. His chest tightens as if something inside has cracked open. The image he had built of Taesan, obedient, predictable, always trailing after him, fractures without warning. Along with it, the version of himself he had always believed in begins to splinter too.

For a long time, Jaewon remains in the shadows, unmoving, half hidden behind the wall while the world carries on without him. Laughter drifts through the air. Glasses clink. People pass by without noticing the way his hands curl into fists at his sides. His heart pounds harder than it should, each beat thick with something ugly and unfamiliar. Jealousy coils low in his stomach, sharp and poisonous. Betrayal follows close behind, irrational and burning, even though he knows he has no right to feel it. Loss seeps in last, quiet but devastating. He tells himself it is stupid, that Taesan was never his to begin with. Still, the sight of someone else standing where he used to stand gnaws at him. Something has shifted between them, something final, and for the first time Jaewon is not the one in control.

Joshua smiles softly, the expression steady and certain, nothing forced about it. There is reassurance in his eyes as he places a hand gently on Taesan's shoulder, his touch warm and protective. Taesan does not hesitate or stiffen. He simply accepts it, leaning into the contact as though it is the most natural thing in the world. The moment stretches, heavy and intimate, like a quiet promise neither of them needs spoken aloud.

Then Joshua's voice breaks the silence, low and sincere. "You don't have to pretend with me, Taesan. I'm here. Always."

Then, finally, they kiss.

It happens so quietly that for a second it almost feels unreal, like a scene slipping past unnoticed.

Their lips meet with hesitation, light and uncertain, as if both are afraid the moment might break if they press too hard. A soft pause lingers between them, breaths mingling, the world around them fading into nothing but distant noise.

Taesan is the first to lean in fully.

His fingers clutch the fabric of Joshua's shirt, knuckles tightening as though searching for something solid to hold onto. There is no rush in the way he moves, no recklessness. Only trust. Only surrender. A side of him so careful and guarded, now unfolding without resistance.

The kiss deepens, still gentle, still slow, but filled with something heavier. Months of unspoken feelings. Quiet comfort. Relief.

It is not desperate.

It is intimate.

Like two people finally choosing each other.

Joshua's hands rise to Taesan's face, cradling him with an almost fragile tenderness, thumbs brushing softly against his cheeks as if Taesan might disappear if held too loosely. The gesture is careful, protective, the kind that speaks louder than any confession.

They stay like that for a long moment, foreheads nearly touching, breaths warm against each other's skin. The rest of the world no longer matters.

From a distance, Jaewon watches.

He cannot look away.

Every second stretches painfully, each small movement carving deeper into his chest. The way Taesan leans closer. The way his shoulders relax. The way he smiles faintly into the kiss like he has finally found somewhere safe to rest.

Jaewon has never seen that expression before.

Not with him.

Not ever.

This is not the quiet, obedient Taesan he thought he understood. Not the boy who followed him around, who trusted too easily, who could be steered with a few careful words.

This Taesan looks different.

Stronger.

Untouchable.

Like someone who no longer needs him.

A sharp, unfamiliar ache spreads through Jaewon's chest, tight and suffocating. Jealousy. Regret. Something uglier that he cannot name.

His throat feels dry.

When they finally part, they stay close, smiling softly at each other like they share a secret the world isn't allowed to know.

And for the first time, Jaewon feels it clearly.

He has already lost.

In the silence of the night, Jaewon is left with the painful realization that he's been left behind. He watches as Joshua whispers something to Taesan, his voice low and comforting, words Jaewon can't hear but feels all the same. He watches as Taesan nods, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips—an expression Jaewon has never seen before, not on him.

He watches as Joshua opens the door to his sleek black KIA SELTOS, holding it open for Taesan to slip inside. Taesan's gaze lingers on Joshua for a moment, a quiet moment of understanding passing between them before he slides into the car. The door closes.

Jaewon stands frozen on the street corner, the night air biting at his skin, but he hardly feels it. His gaze remains fixed on the sleek KIA SELTOS as Joshua closes the door behind Taesan. The world around him feels distant, muted, as though the sounds of the city no longer matter. His chest tightens with each passing moment, and yet he can't bring himself to turn away.

Inside the car, the atmosphere shifts as soon as the door closes. The world outside, with all its noise and chaos, is suddenly shut out, leaving only the two of them in this intimate space. The glow from the streetlights outside filters through the tinted windows, casting soft shadows on their faces.

Taesan looks over at Joshua, his breath shallow, his mind still racing from everything that has just happened. He's not used to feeling this vulnerable, not used to letting anyone see him like this. But with Joshua, it feels different. He's not being judged, not being measured against some standard of perfection. With Joshua, he feels like he can just… be.

Joshua reaches out, his hand brushing gently against Taesan's, a quiet reassurance. He doesn't need to say anything; the gesture speaks volumes.

"I never imagined I'd find myself here."

"You don't have to carry this weight alone, Taesan. You've been doing it for so long, and I can see how much it's been eating away at you."

Taesan's lips part, his breath trembling slightly as he looks at Joshua. There's so much he wants to say, but for the first time in a long while, words seem inadequate. Instead, he leans forward, his fingers trembling as they find Joshua's face, his thumb brushing across the curve of his jaw.

"Joshua," Taesan says, his voice thick with emotion. "I never thought I'd… I didn't think I'd ever find someone who could understand. Not like this."

"I think I like you, Joshua."

Joshua's hand moves to Taesan's, his thumb tracing the back of his knuckles. "Not alone you. I too like you, Taesan."

His eyes search Joshua's face, and for the first time, he feels the weight of everything he's kept hidden for so long begin to lift.

Without thinking, Taesan closes the distance between them again, his lips finding Joshua's in a soft, lingering kiss. It's different from before—gentler, less hurried, as though both of them are taking the time to savor the quiet truth between them. Taesan can feel the warmth of Joshua's lips against his, the steady beat of his heart, and for a fleeting moment, it feels like everything else fades away.

Joshua's hands move to Taesan's neck, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss. It's not about power, or influence, or wealth. It's about two people, vulnerable and real, finding solace in each other's presence.

Back in the shadows of the street, Jaewon stood still, half-hidden behind the dim glow of a flickering streetlamp. He did not remember when his feet had started moving or why he had followed them this far. One moment he had been inside, surrounded by noise and laughter, and the next he was here, only a few steps away from the parked car.

Cold air seeped through his clothes. Each breath left a faint cloud in front of his face.

Inside the car, the world felt quieter. Smaller. Intimate.

He should not have been watching.

Yet he could not look away.

Through the window, he saw Taesan sitting close to Joshua, their shoulders brushing. They were talking softly, faces lit by the dull yellow light above the dashboard. Taesan was smiling in a way Jaewon had rarely seen. Not the shy, awkward smile he wore around others, but something relaxed. Comfortable. Real.

Joshua leaned in first.

Their lips met once, slow and certain.

Then again.

And again.

Jaewon's chest tightened with every second that passed.

Jealousy crept in before he could stop it. Hot and suffocating. Something sharp twisted beneath his ribs, something that felt dangerously close to betrayal. His fists curled at his sides until his nails dug into his palms.

He told himself to turn away.

He told himself it did not matter.

But his feet refused to move.

The sight rooted him to the ground.

For years, Taesan had always been there. Within reach. Within control. Someone dependable. Someone who waited.

Someone who belonged in the background of his life.

And now, watching Joshua's hand slide gently around Taesan's waist, pulling him closer like it was the most natural thing in the world, Jaewon understood something he had refused to admit.

Taesan was no longer his.

Maybe he never had been.

Joshua's presence filled the space effortlessly. Confident. Protective. Certain. Everything Jaewon had never bothered to be.

Jaewon had always assumed Taesan would stay the same. Soft. Predictable. Easy to use.

But this version of him felt distant. Untouchable.

Like someone Jaewon did not know at all.

His throat felt dry.

"…What the hell…" he muttered under his breath, though no sound truly came out.

The laughter from earlier echoed faintly in his head. All those jokes. All those careless words.

Suddenly, none of them felt funny.

He turned away at last.

His legs felt strangely weak, as if the ground beneath him had softened. Each step felt heavier than the last. His thoughts tangled together, confusion mixing with regret and something that looked too much like fear.

He did not understand what he was feeling.

Only that he hated it.

Behind him, inside the car, Joshua glanced toward the window, still kissing Taesan. His eyes caught the retreating figure disappearing down the street.

A slow smirk curved across his lips.
