Chapter 12 - 12. Shifting Tides

When they arrive at Taesan's apartment, Jaewon hops out of the car, still riding the high of the evening. Taesan follows, locking the vehicle before trailing behind him up the stairs.

Inside, Jaewon flops onto the couch, kicking off his shoes with a sigh. "Man, what a night. You're lucky to have me, Hyung. If it weren't for me, you'd probably never get out and meet people. I'm like your personal social coach."

Taesan walks to the kitchen, placing his keys on the counter. "You're right," he says, his tone steady. "I wouldn't know how to handle these things without you."

Jaewon grins, oblivious to the faint edge in Taesan's voice. "Exactly! Don't worry, though. I've got your back."

Taesan pours himself a glass of water, the faint clink of ice against the glass filling the silence. He turns to look at Jaewon lounging on the couch, his carefree demeanor a stark contrast to the simmering thoughts in Taesan's mind.

"Jaewon," Taesan says suddenly, his voice calm but deliberate.

Jaewon looks up, curious. "Yeah?"

"Thank you," Taesan says, his eyes meeting Jaewon's. "For always looking out for me."

Jaewon blinks, slightly caught off guard by the sincerity in Taesan's tone. But he quickly recovers, waving a dismissive hand. "Don't mention it, Hyung. What are bestfriends for?"

Taesan nods, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "What are bestfriends for, indeed."

As Jaewon settles back into his usual chatter, Taesan leans against the counter, sipping his water. He plays along, for now, letting Jaewon bask in his illusions of control.

But the quiet strength in Taesan's gaze betrays his true intent. The time to shift the dynamic is drawing closer, and when it comes, Jaewon won't see it coming.

The next few days pass uneventfully—or so it seems. Jaewon continues as usual, reveling in his social charm, dragging Taesan along to gatherings, dinners, and outings where the unspoken expectation remains the same: Taesan will foot the bill, endure the jokes, and remain a silent pillar Jaewon can lean on.

But Taesan begins making subtle changes. He speaks less at these gatherings—not out of shyness, but calculation. He observes more, studying the dynamics of Jaewon's friendships, noticing the cracks beneath their laughter and camaraderie.

Jaewon's friends, for all their charm, have their own insecurities. Minho, the loudest among them, is desperate for validation; his jokes often mask a deep-seated fear of being ignored. Maya's charm comes with a biting edge, her words sharp enough to cut Taesan's image in front of everyone. And then there is Jaewon, the bestfriend, who adds to Taesan's problems.

One evening, Jaewon bursts into Taesan's study, a grin plastered across his face. "Hyung! There's this new lounge opening up downtown, super exclusive. My friends and I are going—you're coming, right?"

Taesan looks up from his book, his expression unreadable. "I'm busy tonight."

Jaewon blinks, caught off guard. "Busy? Doing what?"

"Work." Taesan's tone is calm, final.

Jaewon laughs awkwardly. "Come on, Hyung. You're always working. Take a break. You can meet us after—"

"I said no."

The sharpness in Taesan's voice makes Jaewon pause. He looks at his Hyung, really looks, for the first time in weeks. There is a quiet steel in Taesan's eyes that hasn't been there before—a calm confidence that is unsettling.

"Okay, uh, no worries," Jaewon mumbles, backing toward the door. "I'll catch you later then."

As the door clicked softly behind him, Taesan sank into his chair, letting out a controlled breath. Tonight was only the first step, small but deliberate. He would no longer allow Jaewon to dictate his time or his choices. Not anymore.

He opened a hidden tab on his computer and his fingers moved with precision, each keystroke deliberate and practiced. Moments later, the transfer button glowed on the screen. One final click confirmed the transaction. Taesan leaned back, a slow, satisfied smile spreading across his face. Everything was in place.

"Ahn Jaewon," he murmured, his voice low and measured, carrying quiet triumph, "you once asked if I was any good at hacking. Good? You have no idea. I'm a pro now."

The screen displayed the proof—access to Jaewon's bank account. This was no accident, no lucky guess. It was the result of careful observation and Jaewon's own carelessness. He had always assumed Taesan was too naive, too simple-minded to notice the details. He had shared PIN codes casually, convinced his hyung posed no threat.

Now, the tables had turned. Taesan leaned forward slightly, eyes tracing the glowing numbers on the screen, feeling the subtle weight of absolute control. What had been Jaewon's arrogance and blind trust had become Taesan's leverage. One misstep had created an opening, and he had walked through it without hesitation. The quiet satisfaction in his chest was cold, deliberate, and undeniable.

Taesan's phone buzzes, breaking the stillness of the room. He answers with practiced calm.

"Hello, sir. I'm doing well, thank you. I'll be at the lounge by 7:00 PM. Looking forward to a great evening," he says smoothly before ending the call.

Placing the phone down, a sharp glint sparks in his eyes as he murmurs to himself. "Jaewon, you thought that wealth alone could define my worth and that someone like me didn't deserve more. But now, I'll show you how the game changes when wounded feelings turn into calculated actions."

Jaewon lounges casually with his friends, the dim lighting casting a warm glow over their table. Maya leans back in her seat, a sly smirk playing on her lips. "So, where's your wealthy benefactor tonight?" she asks, her tone dripping with mockery.

Jaewon snorts, rolling his eyes as he picks up his glass. "Oh, him? He claimed he had some 'important' work to handle," he says with an exaggerated air of seriousness before downing his soda in one swift gulp. "As if sitting at home counts as important."

The group chuckles, the sound light and unbothered, as Jaewon smirks to himself, clearly unfazed by Taesan's absence.
