Chapter 21 - The Judas Contract

The Silence Cells hadn't changed, but Alaric had.

When Kaelen stepped into the subterranean dampness, the Sovereign's Ledger immediately went to work. The red numbers above the "Hero's" head were no longer just a tally of sins—they were a jagged, bleeding mess of trauma and resentment.

Alaric: -45,000 (Wrath / Despair).

"Go away," Alaric rasped before Kaelen even reached the bars. He was huddled in the corner, his fingers tracing patterns in the grime on the floor. "I've heard your 'sermons' through the stone. I've heard the city cheering for you. Just... end it. If you're the Void King, then kill me like a king."

Kaelen didn't answer immediately. He signaled the guards to leave, his new Exemption Status making them obey without a second thought. Once the iron door at the end of the hall clanged shut, Kaelen tapped his cane on the floor.

"I'm not here as a King, Alaric. And I'm certainly not here as a Saint."

Kaelen pulled a heavy parchment from his sleeve—the Judas Contract he had scouted in the Karma Market. He slid it through the bars.

"What is this?" Alaric spat, though he crawled toward the paper with morbid curiosity.

"Your ticket out of this cage," Kaelen said, leaning against the cold stone. "But it comes with a tax. You know the truth, Alaric. You know I'm the one who sabotaged the vault. You know I'm a fraud. But nobody believes a fallen hero. To the world, you're a madman. To me? You're a liability."

Alaric looked at the contract. The text was written in shifting, oily ink that seemed to squirm on the page.

THE JUDAS CONTRACT The Signee hereby agrees to become the 'Spiritual Proxy' for the Master. All moral weight, karmic debt, and spiritual backlash incurred by the Master shall be transferred to the Proxy. In exchange, the Proxy is granted 'Freedom from Physical Constraint' and 'Immortal Resilience'.

"You want me to take your sins," Alaric whispered, horror dawning on his face. "If you kill someone... the universe blames me?"

"Exactly," Kaelen said, his voice as smooth as silk. "I get to keep my 'Saint' status no matter what atrocities I commit. My Karma stays pure. My debt stays low. And you? You get to leave this cell. You get your strength back. You can even try to kill me, if you like—though the contract makes that... difficult."

"I would rather rot," Alaric snarled, tearing the paper.

But the paper didn't tear. It turned into black smoke and reformed in Alaric's hand.

"Think about it, Hero," Kaelen said, turning to leave. "In three days, the Academy holds the Rite of Purification. If you aren't by my side as my 'redeemed squire,' the Headmaster is going to have you transferred to the Black-Iron Mines. No one survives the mines. Sign the contract, and you can stay in the light. You can watch me from the front row as I turn this world into my personal bank."

Kaelen paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder.

"Don't take too long. My patience is the only thing I don't pay interest on."

The Rising Cost

Kaelen returned to the surface, his mind already moving to the next phase. The ninety-day interest freeze was a gift, but it was also a trap. He needed to generate enough "Positive Karma" during this window to buy out his next major milestone.

He entered his private study to find Seraphina waiting for him. She was looking at a map of the Northern Territories, where the Cursed Duchy of Valois lay.

"The Auditor gave you a pass, I hear," she said, not looking up. "The Under-Market is buzzing. They say you've got a celestial being in your pocket."

"A temporary arrangement," Kaelen said, sitting at his desk. "What's the word on Valois?"

"It's perfect for you," Seraphina said, finally turning around. A predatory glint was in her eye. "The Duchy is suffering from a 'Plague of Shadows'. The Church can't heal it. The King is desperate. They're offering a reward of five million gold and a 'Sacred Relic' to anyone who can cleanse it."

Kaelen looked at the map. He didn't care about the gold. A Plague of Shadows meant thousands of dying people—thousands of "miracles" waiting to be performed.

"And the source of the plague?" Kaelen asked.

"An ancient tomb," Seraphina replied. "The locals think it's a curse. I think it's a Karma Sink—a place where the System is leaking."

Kaelen stood up, his eyes glowing. If he could harvest a Karma Sink while Alaric held his "Debt" through the Judas Contract, he wouldn't just pay his interest. He would become the Bank.

[NOTIFICATION!] [New Quest: The Cleansing of Valois.] [Potential Karma Yield: 2,500,000 KP.] [Potential Risk: System Integrity Failure.]

"Prepare the carriage," Kaelen said. "And tell the Headmaster the Saint has had a 'Vision'. We're going on a healing tour."

Just then, a faint, agonizing scream echoed from the dungeons far below. Kaelen felt a sharp, cold tingle in his chest.

[NOTIFICATION!] [The Judas Contract has been Signed.] [Proxy Established: Alaric.] [Master Kaelen is now 'Sin-Proof' for the duration of the contract.]

Kaelen smiled. The Hero had broken. Now, the real fun could begin.
