Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – The Second Signature

Velora knew the moment she stepped inside—

Something had changed.

The house felt… prepared.

Her mother was sitting in the living room.

Not reading. Not working.

Waiting.

"You went somewhere," her mother said calmly.

Not a question.

Velora didn't remove her shoes.

"Yes."

A pause.

"The hospital," her mother added.

Velora's heart thudded once.

Hard.

"How do you know that?"

Her mother smiled faintly.

"You really think records are accessed without notifications?"

So she had access.

Control.

Of course she did.

Velora stepped forward.

"Why was my guardianship changed six months after the shooting?"

Silence.

Her father wasn't home.

Convenient.

Her mother crossed her legs slowly.

"You were very sick," she said.

"That's not what I asked."

Her mother's eyes sharpened.

"Legal matters are complicated."

"Who was my guardian before you?" Velora pressed.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Her mother stood up.

"You're asking the wrong questions."

"Then tell me the right ones."

For a brief second—

Her mother's mask slipped.

Just slightly.

"You were not stable," she said quietly. "You were attached to things that would have destroyed you."

"Things?" Velora repeated.

Her voice lowered.

"People."

Riven.

"So you transferred me," Velora said slowly. "Like property."

Her mother didn't deny it.

"I protected you."

"From who?"

Her mother stepped closer.

"From the world that killed him."

The words landed heavily.

"Or from the world he belonged to?" Velora shot back.

That hit.

Her mother's expression hardened.

"You don't understand what he was involved in."

"Then explain it."

Silence.

Thick.

Then—

"You were never meant to be part of that world," her mother said softly.

Never meant to be.

The wording was careful.

Too careful.

"Was I born into it?" Velora asked.

Her mother's jaw tightened.

"You're tired," she said.

Deflection.

That was answer enough.

Velora's pulse pounded.

"Who was my first guardian?"

Her mother stepped even closer.

And whispered—

"Someone who lost the right to you."

Lost.

Not died.

Lost.

Before Velora could respond—

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Her mother looked around sharply.

Velora felt it instantly.

Cold air.

Pressure shift.

Riven.

He appeared behind her mother.

But different.

Less stable.

His form fractured at the edges.

"Don't listen to her," he said urgently.

Her mother froze.

Not because she saw him.

Because she felt something.

"What is that?" she whispered.

Velora's heart raced.

"She can feel you," she breathed.

Riven's eyes darkened.

"She always could."

That changed everything.

Her mother stepped back slowly.

Her breathing uneven now.

"You shouldn't be here," she said into the empty space.

Velora's stomach dropped.

"You know he's here."

Her mother didn't answer directly.

Instead—

She whispered something under her breath.

A name.

Not Adrian.

Not Riven.

Another name.

One Velora had never heard before.

And Riven's form reacted violently.

He staggered.

As if the name hurt him.

"What did you just say?" Velora demanded.

Her mother looked at her.

Not afraid.

Not angry.

Certain.

"You think he protects you?" she said quietly.

"He's the reason you were transferred."

The room went silent.

Transferred.

"You're lying," Velora whispered.

But doubt crept in.

Riven's form flickered harder.

"Don't believe her," he said through strain.

Velora turned toward him.

"What is she talking about?"

He didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

He was fading.

Fast.

Her mother watched carefully.

"You're stronger when he's weak," she murmured.

Velora's blood ran cold.

"You did something," she accused.

Her mother's smile returned.

Small.

Controlled.

"I finished what was started six months after the shooting."

Finished.

The second document.

The second signature.

Velora understood suddenly.

The guardian transfer wasn't just legal.

It was spiritual.

Severance.

Her mother didn't just adopt her.

She separated her.

From him.

Riven's voice dropped to a whisper.

"She altered the contract…"

Contract?

"What contract?" Velora cried.

But he vanished.

Completely.

The room went still.

Empty.

For the first time—

He didn't linger.

Velora stood frozen.

Her mother stepped closer gently.

"He's weakening," she said softly.

"And when he's gone… you'll finally be safe."

Velora looked at her.

And for the first time—

She saw the truth.

Her mother wasn't afraid of memory.

She wasn't afraid of the mafia.

She wasn't afraid of Velora hating her.

She was afraid of something older.

Something binding.

Something contractual.

And somehow—

Velora had been signed into it.
