Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: When the Sky Start to Notice

Sector 9 didn't look the same anymore.

It still had broken roofs, cracked walls, and streets full of rubble—but there was movement now. Purpose. Direction.

People carried planks from one building to another. Someone had turned an overturned cart into a water station. A group of older boys worked together to drag a rusted gate into place at the main entrance.

It wasn't a fortress.

But it wasn't helpless either.

Kael stood at the center of the district, watching the changes.

"Thirty-eight," he murmured.

Mirel leaned against a wooden post nearby.

"Thirty-eight what?"

"People," Kael said. "Four more came in this morning."

Mirel exhaled slowly.

"Word really is spreading."

Kael nodded.

"That's the problem."

She smirked faintly. "You say that like you don't want it."

"I do," Kael replied. "But the more we grow, the harder it is to hide."

The system flickered.

❝Territory Status Update❞

Population: 38

Zone Control: 29%

Morale: Stable

Threat Level: Rising

Mirel looked at the screen.

"Threat level rising," she read. "That sounds comforting."

Kael didn't respond.

Because he felt it too.

Not with his eyes.

With his instincts.

The same feeling he'd had before the hunters first appeared.

Like the sky itself was paying attention.

Noa sat near the entrance gate, watching the street beyond Sector 9.

"…They're closer," he said.

Kael turned.

"How many?"

Noa frowned slightly.

"…Not like before."

"What does that mean?" Mirel asked.

Noa pointed upward.

"They're not walking this time."

Far above the city, beyond mortal sight, the hunters gathered in a quiet formation.

Dozens of them.

Not ash-gray.

Not black.

These cloaks were pale silver.

Higher rank.

Stronger.

And at the center of them stood the radiant god from the prison.

His expression was calm.

But his eyes were colder than before.

"The influence node is stabilizing," one hunter reported.

"Population increase confirmed."

The radiant god looked down toward the city.

"…He's recovering faster than expected."

Another hunter bowed its head.

"Shall we purge the district?"

The radiant god was silent for a long moment.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

The hunters stiffened.

"No?" one repeated.

"Destroying it now would feed his growth," the god said.

"We need to suffocate it instead."

"How?"

The radiant god's gaze sharpened.

"We take everything around it."

Back in Sector 9, Kael felt the warmth in his chest pulse again.

Stronger.

Clearer.

And this time—

A voice followed.

"Kael."

He froze.

"…You're back."

The voice was faint, like someone speaking from another room.

But it was there.

"Partially," the god replied.

"Don't get excited."

Kael almost laughed.

"You sound terrible."

"I am terrible."

Mirel noticed his expression.

"He's talking again?" she asked.

Kael nodded.

"Yeah."

Noa smiled faintly.

"The candle's not small anymore."

Inside the system core, the ember had grown into a small flame.

Still fragile.

Still incomplete.

But alive.

The forgotten god looked at the cluster of lights that represented Sector 9.

"…You built something," he murmured.

❝Creator Core Stabilization: 21%❞

❝Territory Influence: Active Feed Detected❞

He could feel it now.

Not just the hosts.

The people.

Their fear.

Their stubbornness.

Their refusal to leave.

It wasn't faith.

But it was close enough.

Back in the district, Kael leaned against a wall.

"So," he said inwardly,

"what's next?"

The god was quiet for a moment.

"They won't attack directly."

Kael frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because they're learning," the god replied.

"Every time they push too hard, we grow faster."

Mirel crossed her arms.

"So what, they'll just leave us alone?"

Kael shook his head.

"No," he said.

"They'll go around us."

The god's voice turned colder.

"They'll starve the territory."

At that moment, one of the lookouts ran into the street.

"Caravan!" he shouted. "Supply caravan—just turned around at the main road."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of caravan?"

"Food," the boy said. "Grain carts. They were heading this way… then they turned back."

Mirel cursed under her breath.

"They're cutting off supplies."

Kael nodded.

"Starvation instead of swords."

The god spoke softly.

"More efficient. Less risk."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"They think we'll collapse on our own."

Noa stood up.

"…There are more like that," he said.

"More what?" Mirel asked.

"People with food," Noa replied. "But they're being stopped before they reach us."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"Then we don't wait for food to come to us."

Mirel frowned.

"You're not thinking what I think you're thinking."

Kael looked toward the edge of the district.

"We expand."

The system pulsed.

❝Territory Expansion Condition Detected❞

Adjacent Zone: Sector 10

Status: Unstable, Low Population

Potential Influence Gain: High

Mirel groaned.

"You really are serious."

Kael nodded.

"If we control more ground, they can't choke us as easily."

"And they'll notice faster," she said.

"They already have," Kael replied.

Inside his chest, the god's voice returned.

"You're thinking like a ruler now."

Kael smirked faintly.

"Don't sound so surprised."

"I'm not," the god said.

"I'm just… relieved."

Kael blinked.

"Relieved?"

"That I chose you."

The warmth in his chest pulsed again.

Stronger than before.

As the sun dipped lower, Kael gathered a small group near the entrance of Sector 9.

"We're moving into the next district," he said.

The older man frowned.

"That place is worse than this one."

"Exactly," Kael replied. "Which means no one's guarding it."

Mirel leaned on her rod.

"And when they realize what we're doing?"

Kael's eyes hardened.

"Then they'll have to stop us the loud way."

Far above, the radiant god watched the district.

His expression darkened slightly.

"He's moving sooner than expected," he murmured.

One of the silver-cloaked hunters spoke.

"Shall we intervene?"

The radiant god shook his head.

"No," he said.

"Let him grow."

The hunter tilted its head.

"Why?"

The god's eyes glowed faintly.

"Because when he grows… he exposes himself."

Back in Sector 9, Kael stood at the front of a small group.

Behind him—

Thirty-eight people.

Ahead—

Another broken district waiting to be claimed.

Inside his chest, the god's presence felt steadier than before.

Not whole.

But alive.

"Be careful," the god said quietly.

Kael smirked.

"When have I ever been careful?"

The god almost sounded like he was smiling.

"Never.

That's why this is working."

As they stepped out of Sector 9 and toward the next stretch of ruined streets, the system pulsed softly.

❝Territory Expansion Initiated❞

And far above, the sky watched.

Because the small spark in the slums wasn't flickering anymore.

It was starting to spread.
