Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: When Gods Step Onto the Board

The corridor felt smaller with a god inside it.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

Space seemed to bend around the radiant man as he walked forward, boots making soft, deliberate contact with the stone floor. Dust avoided him. Light curved gently around his shoulders like it belonged there.

Kael's instincts screamed.

Run.

Hide.

Kneel.

Anything but stand in front of that presence.

Behind him, Noa watched with open curiosity, like a child seeing a new animal at a market.

"…You're bright," Noa said.

The radiant god chuckled.

"And you're dangerous," he replied. "What a strange combination we have here."

The three black-cloaked hunters fanned out behind him, silent and motionless.

Kael's hand twitched near his side.

Fighting wasn't an option.

Not against that.

The forgotten god spoke, voice low and strained.

"That one outranks me."

Kael swallowed. "By how much?"

"…Enough that this isn't a fight. It's an execution."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"Then we don't fight," he said.

The radiant god stopped ten steps away.

He studied Kael first.

Then Mirel's absence flickered across his awareness.

Then his gaze settled on Noa.

And stayed there.

"…Ah," he said softly. "So that's the problem."

Noa blinked. "Problem?"

The god crouched slightly, lowering himself to the boy's level.

"You shouldn't exist," he said gently.

"Not like this."

Noa thought about that.

"I've heard that before."

The god smiled sadly.

"I believe it."

He stood again and looked at Kael.

"I'll make this simple," he said. "Release the boy. Sever your connection to the fallen one. I'll let you live."

Kael didn't hesitate.

"No."

The god's expression didn't change.

"Think carefully," he said. "You are not important. He is."

Kael's eyes hardened.

"That's funny," he said. "Because I was told the same thing once."

Silence stretched.

Then the god sighed.

"I was hoping you'd choose the easier path."

Noa stepped forward.

"If you're here to erase me," he said politely, "please do it quickly."

Kael's head snapped toward him.

"What are you saying?"

Noa shrugged.

"If I'm the problem, removing me solves things, right?"

The forgotten god felt something twist inside his core.

"Don't say that," he said quietly.

Noa tilted his head.

"You sound… upset."

Kael stepped in front of him.

"No one's getting erased today."

The radiant god's eyes cooled slightly.

"You're making this harder than it needs to be."

He raised one hand.

Light gathered at his fingertips—not blinding, not explosive.

Just absolute.

Reality around his hand stabilized, locking into place.

Noa's expression changed for the first time.

"Oh," he whispered. "That feels… heavy."

The god's voice echoed in Kael's mind.

"He's stabilizing the area. Noa can't erase anything inside that field."

Kael's heart dropped.

"So he's just a kid now."

"Yes."

The radiant god lowered his hand slightly.

"Last chance," he said calmly.

Kael didn't move.

The air trembled.

Not from the radiant god.

From the forgotten one.

His presence surged forward, wrapping around Kael, around Noa, around the very concept of their connection.

"I warned you," he said softly.

Kael felt it.

Something tearing loose.

"What are you doing?" he demanded.

"Breaking another rule."

System windows erupted around him.

❝Emergency Authority Override❞

❝Forbidden Protocol Activated❞

❝Host Link Reinforcement: Absolute❞

❝Cost: Divine Core Integrity❞

The radiant god's eyes widened.

"No," he said sharply. "You wouldn't—"

The forgotten god's voice turned cold.

"I already did."

The corridor darkened.

Not because of shadow.

Because light lost meaning.

The radiant god's stabilizing field flickered.

Cracks spread across its surface.

Noa blinked.

"Oh," he said softly.

"I can feel it again."

The radiant god stepped back.

"You're destroying yourself," he said. "For them?"

The forgotten god didn't answer.

Kael felt the truth anyway.

His system pulsed violently.

❝Divine Core Damage Detected❞

❝Growth Multiplier Reduced❞

❝Long-Term Stability Compromised❞

Kael clenched his fists.

"You idiot," he whispered.

The god chuckled faintly.

"I've been called worse."

Noa raised his hand.

The stabilizing field shattered.

He reached toward the radiant god.

For the first time—

The radiant god moved fast.

He stepped forward and struck.

Not with a blade.

With presence.

Noa flew backward, slamming into the wall. Stone cracked.

Kael rushed to his side.

"You okay?"

Noa blinked slowly.

"…That hurt," he admitted.

The radiant god stood tall again, expression no longer gentle.

"You've forced my hand," he said.

Light gathered around him, denser now, heavier.

"This ends here."

The hunters stepped forward as one.

Kael rose, placing himself between them and Noa.

The forgotten god's presence flickered violently.

"I can't hold this long," he warned.

Kael smiled faintly.

"Then we don't stay long."

Noa tilted his head.

"…You're not running," he observed.

Kael's eyes hardened.

"No," he said.

"We're changing the rules."

Far above, something in the heavens cracked.

A forgotten god burned part of himself to protect three hosts.

And the other gods… finally started paying attention.
