Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20 — TIER TWO

The arena felt different.

Not louder.

Heavier.

Tier Two candidates stood in the preparation hall beneath the Selection Arena. The room was wider than the previous waiting area, but the atmosphere was colder, less curious, more calculated.

These were no longer beginners.

These were survivors of Tier One.

Large screens above displayed the new classification:

Tier Two: Adaptive Combat Evaluation

Which meant one thing.

The system would stop being fair.

Mando's Arrival

Mando stepped into the hall quietly.

Several candidates were already there.

Most wore standard tactical gear issued by the system. Their weapons remained dormant but visible through faint energy outlines around their wrists.

Eyes turned toward him.

Some curious.

Some cautious.

Some hostile.

His black and gold signature had already spread through the lower tiers.

The unregistered anomaly.

The one who stabilized a collapsing arena floor.

The one who refused to explode.

Kael's Warning

Before Mando could move further, a familiar voice spoke behind him.

"You're attracting attention."

Mando turned.

Kael stood against the wall near the observation barrier.

Arms folded.

Eyes sharp.

"They pushed you to Tier Two faster than normal," Kael continued. "Which means they're testing limits now."

"Limits?" Mando asked.

Kael nodded toward the arena entrance.

"They stop measuring skill."

"They measure breaking points."

Mando understood.

The sniper.

The collapsing floor.

Nothing so far had been accidental.

Kael stepped closer.

"One more thing," he said quietly.

"You're not the only anomaly here anymore."

A New Presence

The hall doors opened.

Three new candidates entered.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Not because they looked dangerous.

But because the others moved aside for them.

One of them walked in the center.

Tall.

Confident.

His uniform carried the silver marking of Dominant-Class Candidate.

His energy signature flickered faintly around him, bright white with thin streaks of crimson.

He stopped a few meters from Mando.

Studying him.

Then he smiled slightly.

"You're the one they're talking about."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"My name is Rex Varin," he continued.

"Top-ranked Tier Two."

Silence filled the room.

Everyone knew that name.

Rex wasn't just strong.

He was system loyal.

The kind of candidate who believed the system always made the right decisions.

He looked Mando up and down.

"You don't look impressive."

Mando didn't respond.

That made Rex's smile grow wider.

"Good," he said.

"I hate arrogant fighters."

Observation Tower

High above the arena floor, the observation chamber monitored the interaction.

Liora watched the live feed closely.

"Interesting," she murmured.

Two anomalies in the same tier.

But only one of them was unpredictable.

Behind her, system analysts adjusted the simulation parameters.

"Environmental complexity increased," one of them said.

"Hazard probability raised to twelve percent."

Liora didn't look away from the screen.

"Make it fifteen."

Elsewhere in the Tower

In another office, Aysh was staring at system logs.

Her screen showed multiple protocol overrides.

Not by her.

Not by Liora.

Higher.

Someone was manipulating the tournament structure.

Accelerating stress factors.

And targeting one specific candidate repeatedly.

Mando.

Aysh whispered to herself.

"Why?"

Arena Announcement

A deep mechanical voice echoed through the hall.

"Tier Two evaluation will begin."

"Candidates report to assigned lanes."

The screens flashed.

Names appeared in pairs.

Rex's name appeared first.

His opponent was another Tier Two fighter.

The room shifted as candidates moved toward the gates.

Then Mando's assignment appeared.

Lane Nine.

Opponent:

Unknown Candidate — Restricted Profile

Whispers spread instantly.

Restricted profiles rarely appeared this early.

It meant one thing.

The system didn't want people knowing who or what the opponent was.

Kael noticed it immediately.

"That's not normal."

Mando walked toward the arena gate.

Calm.

Focused.

But inside, something stirred again.

A faint pulse beneath his ribs.

Not pain.

Recognition.

Beneath Titan City

Far below the city foundations…

Stone cracked again.

The ancient chamber trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling as a massive shape shifted slightly in the darkness.

Energy rippled through the underground structure.

Responding.

Watching.

Waiting.

Back at the Arena Gate

The massive doors of Lane Nine opened slowly.

Cold air flowed out from the arena floor.

Mando stepped inside.

Across the arena, the opposite gate began to open as well.

The silhouette that appeared was strange.

Slim.

Still.

Completely motionless.

The figure stepped forward into the arena lights.

And for the first time since entering the system…

Mando felt something unfamiliar.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Because the energy surrounding that opponent wasn't normal.

It was the opposite of his.

Where Mando's power burned black and gold

This candidate's energy pulsed white and violet.

Like a mirror.

Final Line

High above, Liora leaned forward slightly.

"Now this," she said quietly,

"Should be interesting."
