The morning fog clung to the city like a wet shroud.
Mando stood in the abandoned courtyard Kael had chosen for the day's lesson. No weapons. No summoning. Only his body and the harsh concrete beneath his feet.
KAEL Today is about movement. Not a reaction. Not aim. Movement.
Mando exhaled sharply. His muscles screamed in protest after yesterday's rod training.
MANDO You want me to run?
Kael shook his head.
KAEL Not run. Flow. Anticipate. Bend your weight, your balance, your mind to every shift in your surroundings.
Mando frowned.
MANDO Every shift? How do I even notice that?
Kael didn't answer. Instead, he lunged. Fast. Fluid. A single strike aimed to test not strength, but precision.
Mando stumbled back, narrowly blocking the attack with instinct alone.
KAEL You are too rigid.
Hours passed.
Mando fell, stumbled, and sometimes collapsed entirely. Kael corrected every stance, every angle.
By midday, Mando's sweat coated the courtyard, mixing with the drizzle that had returned. His hands shook as he lifted the metal rod again.
MANDO I… I can't do this.
Kael's gaze pierced him.
KAEL You can. You just don't trust yourself yet.
A shadow flickered at the edge of the courtyard. Mando froze.
Not Kael. Not human.
Something moved with unnatural speed, a low-tier scout monster, unseen until now, darting from broken pillars.
Instinct took over. Mando swung the rod.
The creature dodged effortlessly.
MANDO It's… faster than me.
Kael's eyes darkened.
KAEL Good. You are learning. This is why we train without summoning. Weapons are not always reliable.
The creature hissed, slashing with claws that scraped concrete like knives.
Mando ducked, rolled, and struck again. The rod connected this time, but only grazed it. The monster shrieked and disappeared into the ruins.
MANDO Did I even hit it?
Kael shook his head.
KAEL You need awareness, Mando. Not instinct. Not reflex. Awareness.
Later, back at the apartment, Mando sat hunched over a table, still sore and exhausted.
Aysh watched him from the kitchen.
AYSH You're pushing yourself too hard.
MANDO Kael said I need to learn my limits.
Aysh froze. Her hands trembled slightly as she put a bowl on the table.
AYSH Limits… aren't just physical.
Mando looked up, puzzled.
MANDO What do you mean?
Her eyes flickered toward the window, then back to him.
AYSH Some… decisions you make can't be undone. Not even with power.
Mando frowned, sensing her hidden tension, but didn't push.
That night, Kael appeared on the rooftop across the district, silent as always. He looked toward the horizon.
A faint rumble vibrated through the earth.
In the distance, something massive shifted beneath the old industrial zone. Stone cracked. Shadows moved. A deep, resonant growl echoed so powerfully it rattled windows miles away.
KAEL (thought) It's awake.
He touched his scarred hand to the hilt of a concealed weapon.
KAEL (thought) And it knows he exists.
Far below, Aysh knelt in the dark, her communicator buzzing relentlessly.
UNKNOWN: The Devourer stirs.UNKNOWN: Keep him alive. Failure is not an option.
Her hands shook. She pressed a finger to the device.
AYSH (whisper)…I don't have a choice anymore.
Mando stood on the balcony, looking at the fog-shrouded city. His rod rested at his side. No summoning. No hum. Just him and his own weight.
MANDO (thought) If this is how dangerous the world already is…What happens when I can summon anything?
The rain continued to fall. Somewhere in the distance, a shadow moved too fast to see. The city was quiet, but for how long?
