It did not happen in the hall.

It did not happen beneath the watchful eyes of elders or beneath the careful language of politics.

It happened where truth always prefers to live—

In the dark.

Without witnesses.

Without performance.

Elara found him in the training courtyard long after curfew.

The lamps burned low. The wind tasted of iron and distant rain. Stone walls cast long, accusing shadows.

Alessandro stood alone, sleeves rolled, knuckles scraped from earlier drills. He was not sparring now. He was still.

Waiting.

He had known she would come.

That irritated her more than anything.

"Don't," she said immediately, voice sharp as flint.

"Don't what?" he asked calmly.

"Don't look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you understand."

A pause.

"I do."

"God, you are unbelievable."

She paced once across the courtyard, boots echoing. The anger in her chest was not delicate. It was not poetic.

It was ugly.

It was humiliating.
