Chapter 11 - The Breakfast Masquerade

The morning at Roopa Mansion began with its usual veil of secrecy. Yamini rushed into her room, her eyes darting toward the hallway before she clicked her heavy locker open. She tucked away a thick, leather-box—something far too important to be left in the open—and secured the lock. As she hurried out, she nearly ran into Meira. Yamini stiffened, her face twisting in distaste, but she chose to ignore the girl entirely, sweeping past as if Meira were nothing more than a ghost haunting the early morning light.

Downstairs, the atmosphere was thick with forced domesticity. Mohini practically glided toward the breakfast table, leading Meira by the arm. Almost everyone was gathered, the empty chairs of Rudra and Vivek being the only gaps in the formation.

The moment Meira sat down, Raghav's grip tightened on his fork until his knuckles turned white. His blood boiled at her presence, but a sharp, warning glance from Divya forced him to keep his head down.

Mohini caught Shekar's eye, a silent signal passing between them. Immediately, Shekar cleared his throat, offering Meira a practiced, warm smile. "Good morning, Meira. How is your health today? I hope you're feeling more like yourself."

Divya watched the performance with the detached gaze of an audience member at a poorly acted play, her face a mask of stone. Yamini, however, made no effort to hide her disgust, loudly clattering her silverware against her plate.

"I met Meira in the library yesterday!" Sahil piped up, his voice breaking the tension. "She's really cool. She knows so much about adventure stories."

Shekar and Mohini shared a triumphant laugh, delighted that their son was unknowingly aiding their plan. Unable to take another second of the "melo-drama," Raghav stood up abruptly. He grabbed his mother's arm, signaling for her to follow, and stormed out of the dining hall without a word.

As the table cleared, Taniya and Meira stood up at the same time. Meira followed her into the corridor, noticing the way Taniya's shoulders were slumped and her gaze was fixed on the floor.

"Taniya? You look a little lost today," Meira said softly, catching up to her. "Is everything okay?"

Taniya startled, her eyes reflecting a deep-seated worry. "Yes, Meira... everything is fine. It's just... nothing. Really."

Meira reached out, her voice gentle. "You don't have to hesitate with me. If there's something on your mind, you can share it."

Taniya opened her mouth, her defenses finally starting to crumble, but a sharp voice cut through the air like a blade.

"Taniya! Leave," Yamini commanded, appearing suddenly from around the corner. "You have important business to attend to. Stop wasting your time entertaining outsiders when you should be preparing for your future."

Taniya flinched, the spark of confession dying in her eyes. She gave Meira a look of profound apology and helplessness before following her mother toward the study. Meira stood alone in the hallway, the silence of the mansion feeling heavier than ever.

As Meira turned toward the library, she caught a glimpse of Vivek through the grand windows. He was rushing into the mansion from the driveway, his movements frantic and his face etched with a harried expression, as if he were carrying a secret that was burning a hole in his pocket. He didn't even notice her as he disappeared into the shadows of the west wing.

"Hi, Meira."

She turned to find Rudra standing before her, his expression uncharacteristically warm. Meira offered a small, welcoming smile. "Hi, Rudra."

"Where are you heading so early?" he asked, falling into step beside her.

"To the library. Divya Ma'am suggested it, and I found it quite peaceful yesterday."

"In that case, allow me to give you some company," Rudra said. They walked the short distance together—the library was barely ten feet ahead. As they stepped through the heavy doors, Rudra gestured toward the far corner where a small figure was already hunched over a book.

"Oh, look, you already have company here," Rudra noted with a tilt of his head. "That's Sahil. He's Shekar Uncle and Mohini Aunt's only son, and honestly, he's our most precious brother. Have you had the chance to meet him yet?"

Meira nodded, her expression softening. "Yes, we met yesterday. He's a wonderful boy."

"I'm glad to hear that," Rudra replied, his voice sincere. He paused at the threshold, giving her a polite nod. "Well, I'll leave you to your books then. Have a good day, Meira."

With a final wave, he departed, leaving Meira alone with Sahil and the thousands of silent stories waiting on the shelves.
