Chapter 41 - A Detour Through Akihabara

After saying goodbye to Hoshino Ai, Hayato made his way back to the train station and boarded the line heading to Akihabara.

He'd already sent his teachers a message saying he'd return to Chiba in the afternoon, arriving at the school around three o'clock.

Akihabara. The legendary otaku paradise he'd always wanted to visit in his previous life, but never got the chance due to work constantly eating up his time. Now that he was actually in Tokyo and couldn't see Mai anyway, he figured he might as well check it out.

Thirty minutes later, the train pulled into Akihabara Station.

Hayato stepped off and looked up at the green station sign. He pulled out his phone and snapped a quick photo for posterity.

"So this is Akihabara."

A grin tugged at his lips despite himself. The sheer concentration of nerd culture in one place was almost palpable in the air.

"Now, where's that famous maid street everyone talks about?"

He glanced around, trying to get his bearings, but nothing immediately stood out as obviously "the place." After a moment of indecision, he shrugged and decided to just wander. Follow the crowds and see where they lead.

It didn't take long.

Within minutes, he spotted them lining both sides of the street, cute young girls in various uniforms calling out to passersby. Most wore classic black and white maid outfits, though he also noticed red and white variations, plus some pink and white designs scattered throughout.

Young, energetic, radiating that manufactured cheerfulness that was somehow both obviously fake and genuinely charming at the same time.

In his previous life, you'd only see something like this at anime conventions. But here? This was just a normal Tuesday afternoon.

"Onii-chan! Onii-chan! Come visit our maid café!"

One of them stood in place, flashing him a brilliant smile while waving with small, gentle movements of her hand.

Hayato smiled back politely and kept walking, offering a subtle shake of his head to decline.

He wandered for about half an hour, taking in the sights and sounds of Akihabara. Anime merchandise shops, gaming stores, electronics retailers, more maid cafés than seemed physically possible to sustain... it was sensory overload in the best way.

Eventually, he picked one of the maid cafés more or less at random and stepped inside.

Lunchtime.

He ordered omurice, because of course he did. When in Rome and all that.

And just like in every anime that featured this kind of scene, he received the full maid café experience. Complete with all the cutesy elements that would've made him cringe to death in his previous life but somehow felt perfectly natural here.

"Moe moe kyun! Moe moe kyun!"

The maid drew a heart in ketchup on his omurice with practiced precision, performing the little ritual with infectious enthusiasm.

"Master, please enjoy your meal! I hope you have a wonderful lunch!"

Hayato couldn't help but smile.

Yeah, this was worth the detour.

As he ate, a stray thought crossed his mind. A memory of an anime from his previous life.

"Akihabara Maid War, wasn't it?"

He glanced around the café with mild suspicion.

"That shouldn't exist here, though, right? I mean, that one involved guns and explosives and actual violence..."

He chuckled quietly to himself and went back to his meal.

Probably just being paranoid. Not everything from his anime knowledge would manifest in this world. That would be absurd.

Still, he'd accomplished another small item on his previous life's bucket list. That felt good in its own strange way.

When he finished eating, the maids sent him off with their signature sweet farewell. He paid the bill and headed back toward Akihabara Station to catch the train to Chiba.

But near the station entrance, a crowd had gathered.

Hayato slowed his pace, curiosity getting the better of him. He worked his way closer, trying to see what everyone was looking at.

In the center of the gathered crowd stood a beautiful girl dressed in an elaborate black Gothic outfit. She struck various poses with practiced confidence, smiling at the surrounding photographers who were eagerly snapping away, completely captivated by her presence.

"So pretty!"

"The accuracy is incredible! She's captured Black Jiang Zi perfectly. Exactly how I imagined the character."

"Marin-chan's cosplay is always so faithful to the source material. My friend loves this series, but didn't come to Akihabara with me today. Can't wait to send him these photos and make him regret it!"

The comments from the crowd filtered through to Hayato's ears.

Something about that name tickled his memory. He felt like he should recognize it, like the answer was right there on the tip of his tongue...

The girl at the center of attention walked over to one of the photographers to check how the photos came out.

"What do you think? Did they turn out okay?"

"Yeah, they look great."

From this closer distance, Hayato caught sight of blonde hair peeking out from beneath the wig she was wearing.

"Kitagawa Marin."

The words came out of his mouth before he could stop them.

The moment he spoke her name, the girl went completely still. Her eyes darted around the crowd in a quick scan before finally landing on him.

She stared at Hayato's face, clearly trying to place him.

No recognition. She had no idea who he was.

But he knew my name, which meant... was he a classmate from my school that i didn't recognize? Someone from class I'd never really talked to?

Kitagawa Marin's immediate instinct was to wrap this up and get out of here as fast as possible.

Hayato caught her surprised reaction and the wary way she was looking at him. Yeah, he'd definitely guessed correctly.

The protagonist of "My Dress-Up Darling." Blonde gyaru. Loved cosplay with genuine passion. But despite her appearance, surprisingly innocent and pure-hearted. The kind of character who simply wouldn't exist in his previous world's reality, but made perfect sense in the two-dimensional universe.

"Skipping class to come do a photoshoot in Akihabara and running into someone from the same school..."

Kitagawa Marin muttered a few complaints under her breath before calling an early end to the session.

"I'll have to look for him when I get back to school."

Before leaving, she let her gaze linger on Hayato's face for several seconds, memorizing his features to make sure she wouldn't mistake him for someone else later.

At least he didn't seem interested in coming up to chat or cause problems. That was a relief.

Hayato watched the scene for another moment, made eye contact with Kitagawa Marin, who was still sneaking wary glances his way, and gave her a small nod of acknowledgment before turning to leave.

Time was running short anyway. He needed to catch that train to Chiba.

He boarded at Tokyo Station and transferred to the Chiba line.

Checking the map on his phone for the estimated arrival time, Hayato set an alarm to make sure he wouldn't miss his stop, then closed his eyes and settled in for the ride.

But about half an hour later, the train came to a stop and didn't move again.

"What's going on?"

Hayato looked around but couldn't see anything obviously wrong. No announcements, no visible problems. Just... stopped.

A few minutes passed before the train's PA system crackled to life.

"We apologize for the inconvenience. There has been a fire incident at Chiba Station. The Chiba Fire Department is currently responding to the situation. All trains will be temporarily suspended until further notice."

Great.

The wait felt endless.

Hayato pulled out his phone and started scrolling through news and social media to kill time. Around him, the other passengers did much the same, playing mobile games, listening to music, occasionally grumbling about the railway company. But for the most part, everyone maintained their composure with that particularly Japanese sense of restrained patience.

Finally, after more than two hours of sitting there, the announcement came.

"The incident has been resolved. Train service will resume shortly. We apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience."

The train lurched into motion, gradually picking up speed.

"I was supposed to arrive before three. At this rate, getting there before five is questionable."

Fortunately, he'd already sent a message to his teachers earlier: "Fire incident at Chiba Station. Train stopped." Better to keep them informed than let them think he was just blowing them off.

When the train finally pulled into Chiba Station, Hayato stepped off and immediately caught the faint scent of charred material lingering in the air.

"Doesn't seem like it was too serious, at least."

He followed the flow of passengers out of the station and into the late afternoon sunlight.

Next stop: Chiba Sobu High School.
