Chapter 9 - The Crown Has Ears

The palace woke before sunrise.

Not with bells.

Not with servants calling through the corridors.

With silence.

A strange, deliberate silence that settled over Auroria like a veil.

Princess Lyra stood before the tall windows of the Eastern Tower, watching darkness slowly surrender to dawn. The city below appeared peaceful from this distance. Golden rooftops caught the first traces of light. Smoke from chimneys curled lazily into the sky.

But Lyra knew better now.

Peace could be an illusion.

So could loyalty.

She touched the sapphire pendant around her neck.

The cavern beneath the tower had changed everything.

There were now two powers beneath Auroria.

The Hidden Throne.

And whatever had been imprisoned inside the black crystal.

The first tested.

The second tempted.

Neither could be trusted.

A knock sounded behind her.

"Princess?"

Lyra turned.

A young palace messenger stood at the doorway.

"Your presence is requested in the royal council chamber."

"By whom?"

The messenger hesitated.

"The King."

Lyra narrowed her eyes.

"Did he say why?"

"No, Princess."

Something about the answer bothered her.

"Who sent you?"

The messenger lowered his head.

"Captain Rowan."

Lyra's ears twitched.

Captain Rowan was one of her father's most trusted guards.

"Very well."

She picked up her cloak.

As she passed the messenger, she noticed something strange.

His eyes.

For only a moment, they reflected a faint silver glow.

Then it disappeared.

Lyra stopped.

The messenger looked back.

"Princess?"

She studied him.

Nothing.

Just an ordinary palace messenger.

Still, her instincts whispered one word.

Careful.

The council was already assembled when Lyra arrived.

King Leoheart sat at the head of the chamber, his golden mane carefully groomed despite the exhaustion visible around his eyes.

Queen Selene stood beside him.

Elder Corvin was present.

Lady Virelle.

Several generals.

And Captain Rowan.

Lyra entered slowly.

Every eye turned toward her.

That alone was unusual.

She had expected a discussion about the cavern.

Instead, King Leoheart spoke first.

"Close the doors."

Two guards obeyed.

The heavy doors shut with a deep sound.

Lyra looked around the chamber.

"What happened?"

Queen Selene approached her.

"Nothing has happened."

Lyra frowned.

"Then why am I here?"

Her mother exchanged a glance with the King.

"Because someone has been stealing information from the palace."

The room became still.

Lyra's gaze moved across the council.

"About the Hidden Throne?"

"Among other things," said Lady Virelle.

She placed several documents on the table.

"Patrol schedules. Royal correspondence. Records from the southern districts."

Lyra stepped closer.

"Who had access?"

"That," Virelle said, "is the problem."

She pointed toward the documents.

"Almost everyone."

Silence.

Lyra looked at the papers.

Then she noticed something.

A tiny symbol had been drawn in the corner of one document.

A crescent split by a vertical line.

Her stomach tightened.

She had seen it before.

In the cavern.

On the walls.

The mark of the dark crystal.

"Where did this come from?" she asked.

No one answered.

Lyra looked up.

"Who found these?"

Captain Rowan stepped forward.

"I did."

Lyra studied him.

"When?"

"Last night."

"Where?"

"In the western archive."

Her eyes narrowed.

"The western archive wasn't searched after the fire?"

"No."

"Then how did you know to look there?"

Rowan paused.

Only for a heartbeat.

But Lyra noticed.

"I received information."

"From whom?"

"I cannot say."

The answer immediately changed the atmosphere.

King Leoheart's expression hardened.

"You will say."

Rowan lowered his head.

"The source requested anonymity."

Lady Virelle looked irritated.

"In matters of the crown, anonymity is a luxury."

Rowan said nothing.

Lyra watched him carefully.

Something was wrong.

She just didn't know what.

After the meeting, Queen Selene asked Lyra to remain.

Everyone else left.

The doors closed.

Mother and daughter stood alone.

"You don't trust Rowan," Selene said.

Lyra looked at her.

"Do you?"

Her mother didn't answer immediately.

"No."

That surprised Lyra.

"You've trusted him for years."

"I trusted the soldier he presented himself to be."

Selene moved toward the window.

"Lyra, listen carefully. Your father has begun quietly investigating the council."

"Because of the thefts?"

"Because of the pattern."

"What pattern?"

Her mother turned.

"Every piece of information that disappears is something connected to the future of the kingdom."

Lyra's expression changed.

"The enemy isn't stealing weapons."

"No."

"They're stealing knowledge."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Selene's eyes darkened.

"Because whoever controls knowledge controls choices."

Lyra thought of Fang.

Then the crystal.

Then the Hidden Throne.

"What if they're trying to learn how to awaken it?"

Selene didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

That afternoon, Lyra walked through the palace gardens with Swift.

The rabbit kept glancing behind them.

"You've been quiet."

"So have you."

"I am always quiet."

"You've been more quiet."

Lyra smiled faintly.

Swift sighed.

"You're worried."

"Yes."

"About Rowan?"

"About everyone."

Swift stopped.

"Everyone?"

Lyra looked at him.

"The enemy knows things only someone inside the palace could know."

Swift's ears lowered.

"So someone here is helping them."

"Possibly."

"Do you think it's Fang?"

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

Swift blinked.

"You don't?"

"If Fang wanted the palace destroyed, he wouldn't need to hide this carefully."

"Then who?"

Lyra looked toward the palace windows.

"I don't know."

A soft voice came from behind them.

"Perhaps you're looking in the wrong direction."

They turned.

Mira stood beneath an archway.

She had been gone for less than an hour, but somehow she already seemed to know everything.

"What did you find?" Lyra asked.

Mira approached.

"Three things."

She held up one paw.

"First, someone entered the western archive shortly after midnight."

A second finger.

"Second, the guard stationed there remembers seeing no one."

A third.

"And third…"

Mira paused.

"The intruder left through the royal passage."

Swift frowned.

"That's impossible. Only members of the royal family can open that door."

Lyra went still.

"Unless…"

Mira nodded.

"Unless someone gave them access."

That night, Lyra, Mira, Swift, and Bramble stood before an ancient stone door hidden behind a tapestry.

The passage had existed for generations.

It connected the palace to several secret chambers beneath the city.

Lyra pressed her paw against the door.

Nothing happened.

Mira examined the lock.

"No damage."

Bramble sniffed the stone.

"Someone was here."

Lyra looked at him.

"You're sure?"

"Fresh scent."

Swift frowned.

"Can you identify it?"

Bramble shook his head.

"Too many scents."

Mira crouched near the floor.

"There."

A tiny piece of black crystal lay between two stones.

Lyra's heart sank.

She picked it up.

The moment her paw touched it—

A whisper entered her mind.

They are closer than you think.

Lyra dropped the fragment.

"Lyra?"

She stepped backward.

"I heard it."

Mira's expression tightened.

"The crystal?"

Lyra nodded.

"It said they're closer than we think."

Swift looked around nervously.

"Who's they?"

No one answered.

Then—

Footsteps echoed from the corridor.

All four froze.

Someone was approaching.

Mira extinguished the lantern.

They disappeared into the shadows.

The footsteps grew louder.

One figure emerged.

Captain Rowan.

He stopped directly in front of the hidden passage.

Lyra held her breath.

Rowan looked around.

Then he reached beneath his armor.

And removed a small black crystal.

Mira's eyes widened.

Rowan placed it against the stone door.

The ancient lock opened.

Silently.

Lyra felt her heart pound.

Rowan stepped inside.

The door began closing behind him.

Mira whispered,

"Now."

They followed.

The passage descended beneath the palace, twisting through ancient stone.

Rowan moved quickly.

He knew exactly where he was going.

Lyra followed from a distance.

Finally, he entered a small chamber.

There was another animal waiting inside.

A hood covered their face.

Rowan bowed.

"You were right."

The stranger's voice was soft.

"The princess has awakened the throne."

Lyra's blood ran cold.

Rowan continued.

"She has also encountered the second power."

The stranger went silent.

Then—

"Excellent."

Lyra clenched her paws.

So Rowan knew.

Everything.

The stranger stepped forward.

"What does the King suspect?"

"Nothing certain."

"And the Queen?"

"She is becoming suspicious."

"And Lyra?"

Rowan's voice lowered.

"She suspects me."

The stranger laughed softly.

"Then we must move faster."

Lyra looked at Mira.

Mira gave the smallest nod.

They had heard enough.

But before they could retreat—

Rowan spoke again.

"There is one more problem."

"What?"

"The Hidden Throne has accepted her."

Silence.

Then the stranger replied:

"Then we cannot remove the princess."

Lyra's heart stopped.

"We must make her choose us."

The lantern in the chamber flickered.

And for the first time, Lyra understood the enemy's true strategy.

They weren't trying to destroy her.

They wanted to change her.

Lyra stepped backward.

A stone shifted beneath her paw.

The sound echoed.

Rowan turned.

"Who's there?"

Mira grabbed Lyra.

"Run."

They raced through the passage.

Behind them, Rowan shouted.

Guards began appearing from the corridors.

Too many.

Lyra's stomach dropped.

"They knew we'd follow."

Mira nodded.

"It was a trap."

Bramble blocked a narrow passage while Swift searched for another exit.

Lyra looked around desperately.

Then she noticed something.

A symbol carved into the wall.

The same claw-and-crown symbol her father had given her.

She pressed her paw against it.

The stone opened.

"Here!"

They rushed inside.

The passage sealed behind them.

Silence.

They stood in darkness.

Swift breathed heavily.

"They could have caught us."

"They wanted us to follow," Mira said.

Lyra looked at her.

"Why?"

Mira's expression was grim.

"Because they wanted you to hear that conversation."

Lyra understood.

It wasn't a mistake.

It was another message.

The enemy wanted her afraid.

But there was something else.

A deeper question.

Why did they want her to know?

When they returned to Lyra's chamber, something waited on her desk.

A sealed letter.

No royal insignia.

No name.

Only the crescent symbol.

Lyra opened it carefully.

Inside was a single sentence.

Your throne is waiting.

Your crown is not.

Below it was another line.

Ask your father what happened twenty years ago.

Lyra froze.

Twenty years.

The year before she was born.

The year Auroria's borders had nearly collapsed.

The year her father became king.

The year no one ever discussed.

She looked at Mira.

"What happened twenty years ago?"

Mira's expression changed.

"I don't know."

Lyra looked toward the palace.

For the first time, she wondered whether the greatest secret in Auroria wasn't beneath the kingdom at all.

Perhaps it had been sitting on the throne for years.

And perhaps—

Her parents had been hiding it from her.

Far beneath the palace, the hidden chamber began to glow.

The Hidden Throne stirred.

And somewhere in the darkness beside it—

The remaining fragment of the black crystal pulsed once.

Then twice.

As if something had just awakened.

As if someone had finally remembered its name.

The first betrayal had been revealed.

But it was not the last.

And the greatest secret of Auroria—

had only just begun to surface.
