Obelisk the Tormentor: ATK 4000, DEF 4000.
Slifer the Sky Dragon: ATK 1000, DEF 1000.
The advantage was clearly on Obelisk's side, yet Masuzu still did not dare to act rashly. She commanded XY-Dragon Cannon, which had ATK 2200, to test the waters.
"I order XY-Dragon Cannon to attack Slifer, which only has ATK 1000!"
"SUPER DESTRUCTION CANNON!!!"
The two cannon muzzles on XY-Dragon Cannon's back aimed once more at Slifer. Ryunosuke took this opportunity to flip his face-down trap card.
"I activate Mirror Force! Based on its effect, destroy all monsters in attack position on the opponent's field!"
"I knew that card would show up! Don't even hope for it!" Masuzu shouted as if she had predicted this. Indeed, she was the one most wary of Mirror Force. She immediately activated the card she had prepared earlier.
"I activate Interdimensional Matter Transporter! I banish XY-Dragon Cannon to another dimension for one turn; it will return at the end of this turn."
"Furthermore, based on the effects of a Divine card, your trap card has no effect on my Obelisk!"
Having lost its target, the effect of Mirror Force instead struck the only remaining monster on Masuzu's field: Obelisk. The giant God stood perfectly still. A light blue shield formed around it; the Mirror Force attack slammed into the barrier, triggering a brief shower of sparks before vanishing without a trace.
No trap card of any kind worked against a God. Additionally, spell cards only remained in effect for one turn—for example, with Monster Reborn, the God would return to the graveyard after the turn ended.
Masuzu flashed a disparaging smile. "I anticipated this move of yours!"
However, in her heart, she mused...
(The effect of Slifer's Lightning Blast makes it impossible for me to normally summon monsters Level 4 or lower, because their attack won't reach 2000 and they'll be instantly destroyed. Yet, my high-level summons require those low-level monsters as tributes.)
In first and second-generation decks, summoning methods were limited to fusion or tribute. With Slifer's restriction, her path to high-level summoning was indirectly locked. That was why she had to protect XY-Dragon Cannon, then find any way possible to summon a monster with over 2000 ATK to trigger Obelisk's special effect and finish the opponent instantly.
Still within Masuzu's turn, her Obelisk had not yet attacked. She swung her arm gallantly. "Obelisk! GOD HAND CRUSHER!!!"
Obelisk's eyes flashed a sharp red. Receiving the command, it raised its giant blue fist and slammed it toward its old comrade, Slifer. Slifer gave a low growl, appearing indignant and wanting to lunge back, but was held back by Ryunosuke.
"I discard Winged Kuriboh to the graveyard to make the damage from this attack zero!"
Instantly, the winged furball transformed into a wall of particles that withstood the strike of the God's fist. Ryunosuke and Slifer remained completely unharmed.
"Tch! To think you'd block such a lethal attack with trash like that!" Masuzu set two face-down cards and ended her turn. XY-Dragon Cannon returned from the other dimension to the arena.
Now it was Ryunosuke's turn. This time he did not rush to draw a card, but appeared to be deep in thought. Having just discarded Winged Kuriboh, his hand was now empty, and Slifer's ATK had dropped to zero. If he failed to draw a crucial hand-replenishing card this turn, he was finished.
Masuzu stood opposite him with her arms crossed, looking extremely confident that her opponent would not draw a card capable of turning the tide. Although she hadn't seen Ryunosuke reshuffle the deck with Monster Recovery earlier, she could distinguish the order of every card simply by sound. Masuzu possessed that extraordinary ability. Even if this method was sneaky and underhanded, she was determined not to lose. To her, the opponent's strategy was transparent, and she "knew" the next card Ryunosuke would draw was "scrap" Level 4 monster with no effect.
On the other side, Ryunosuke felt a bit tense. The pressure was real; his hand was empty and everything depended on the next card. If he didn't draw something to turn the situation around, he would lose. Considering Yuki's medical expenses, he could not afford to lose!
Ryunosuke took a deep breath, trying to calm himself.
(Don't panic; if you panic, everything will fall apart. Believe in your own deck...)
He stared at the deck in his dueling device, praying silently while also wanting to test one thing: had his "Chuunibyou Mode" truly undergone a change as he suspected?
Ryunosuke closed his eyes, placing his hand over the card, as if he were feeling for something.
Masuzu, seeing the gesture, mocked him inwardly. "Even if you dress like Yugi, you aren't him. Don't tell me you think you can pull off a Destiny Draw and draw whatever card you want? Don't be ridiculous~"
Masuzu waved her hand, dismissing her opponent. Of course—since she "knew" what card Ryunosuke was about to draw, what was there to fear?
Ryunosuke did not let the outside voices distract him. He drew a single card slowly. Unbeknownst to him, the card emitted a faint glow. The deck had answered his call.
Ryunosuke suddenly snapped his eyes open.
"I activate Card of Sanctity! The effect of this card makes both players draw until they have 6 cards in their hand!"
"WHAT?!" Masuzu shrieked hysterically. "How is that possible? The next card was supposed to be—"
Masuzu immediately covered her own mouth; she had almost let it slip. But how was it possible? The next card was clearly a four-star monster, so how could it have changed into Card of Sanctity?!!! She clutched her head, incredibly frustrated; she highly suspected Ryunosuke was cheating!!! But she had no proof.
With this, Ryunosuke's hand increased to 6 cards.
Slifer's offensive power surged to 6000 points!
Slifer the Sky Dragon: ATK 6000, DEF 6000.
Meanwhile, Obelisk only had 4000. Slifer instantly regained its confidence and flaunted its power in front of Obelisk. The giant blue God instead spat in a very human-like manner, showing an expression of pure disdain.
Neither Ryunosuke nor Masuzu realized there was something strange about their respective Divine cards. More accurately, they didn't have time to notice because their eyes were only fixed on one another. Don't misunderstand—it wasn't out of love, but because they were in the middle of a life-and-death duel.
