Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6: THE PAST COMES KNOCKING

Mia's eyes darted between Ethan, Lucas, and Marcus, her mind racing. What was going on? And how did Marcus fit into all this?

Ethan's grip on Marcus's arm tightened. "Talk, Marcus. What's your angle?"

Marcus sneered, but his eyes betrayed a flicker of unease. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Lucas's smile was cold. "Don't play dumb, Marcus. You're dancing with fire, and you're about to get burned."

Mia's patience was wearing thin. "What's going on? Who are you people?"

Ethan's eyes locked onto hers, his expression softening. "We'll explain, Mia. But first, we need to get you safe. You're a loose thread, and people are trying to cut you off."

As they spoke, a black SUV pulled up, windows tinted. The door swung open, revealing a familiar face.

Mia froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Alex?"

Alex's eyes met hers, a mix of emotions flashing across his face. "Mia, get in. Now."

Mia's past was closing in, and she wasn't sure she was ready to face it. Alex was her ex, a guy she'd thought she'd known inside out. But the man staring back at her now was a stranger.

"What are you doing here, Alex?" Mia asked, her voice firm.

Alex's jaw clenched. "I'm here to get you out of this mess. You're in danger, Mia. Big danger."

Ethan's expression turned grim. "Alex is right, Mia. You need to trust us. We can protect you."

Lucas nodded. "We have information that suggests you're the key to unraveling Project Eclipse. But we need to get you safe first."

Mia's mind was spinning. What was Project Eclipse? And why was she the key?

Marcus's eyes flickered to Alex, a look of recognition flashing across his face. "You're him. The ghost."

Alex's expression turned cold. "Shut up, Marcus."

The air was thick with tension as the group stood there, the city pulsing around them. Who was Alex, really? And what did he want with Mia?

Mia's instincts screamed at her. She needed answers, and she needed them now.

"Get in, Mia," Alex said, his voice low and urgent. "I'll explain everything. I promise."

Mia hesitated, her eyes locked onto Alex's. Could she trust him?

Mia's eyes searched Alex's, looking for any hint of the guy she'd once known.

"Get in, Mia," Alex repeated, his voice firm. "We don't have much time."

Mia's thoughts were racing. She had so many questions, but one thing was clear: she needed to get out of there.

She slid into the SUV, Alex following close behind. Ethan and Lucas joined them, Marcus still pinned between them.

As the door closed, the SUV sped off into the city's darkness. Mia's past and present were colliding, and she wasn't sure what would be left standing.

Alex turned to her, his eyes locked onto hers. "Mia, I'm sorry. I never meant for you to get involved in this."

Mia's voice was firm. "Tell me what's going on, Alex. Now."

Alex took a deep breath, his expression grim. "It's about Project Eclipse. And it's about you, Mia. You're the key to unraveling everything."

The SUV hit a bump, and Mia's stomach flipped. What did Alex mean? And what was Project Eclipse?

Alex took a deep breath, his expression grim. "It's about Project Eclipse. And it's about you, Mia. You're the key to unraveling everything."

Mia's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean? How am I connected to this project?"

Ethan leaned forward, his eyes locked onto hers. "Mia, you stumbled onto something at Ryder Innovations. Something that could bring down the entire project."

Lucas nodded. "And now, they're trying to silence you."

Alex's jaw clenched. "Which is why I need you to trust me, Mia. I can protect you, but you have to come with me."

Mia's mind was spinning. Trust Alex? Trust the guys who were pulling her into this mess?

The SUV hit a bump, and Mia's thoughts were jolted back to reality. Where were they taking her?

Mia's gaze bounced between Alex, Ethan, and Lucas, her mind racing like a hamster on a wheel. "Where are we going?" she asked, her voice firm, like she meant business.

Alex's eyes met hers, calm and collected. "Somewhere safe. Somewhere we can figure out what's going on and keep you protected... from the wolves closing in on you."

Ethan nodded, his expression granite-hard. "We have a secure location. You'll be safe there... for now."

Mia's instincts were screaming at her like a fire alarm. Was she walking into a trap? She needed to know more, and she needed it fast.

"What did I stumble onto at Ryder Innovations?" Mia asked, her eyes locked onto Ethan's, daring him to sugarcoat it.

Ethan's expression turned serious, like a judge reading a verdict. "You were looking into a data breach, right? You found something tied to Project Eclipse. Something that could blow the whole thing sky-high."

Mia's thoughts flashed back to her investigation, the encrypted files taunting her. "The encrypted files... I thought they were just a dead end."

Lucas's voice was low, like a warning growl. "Those files are the opposite of a dead end, Mia. They're a ticking time bomb, and you're the only one who can stop it... or set it off."

The SUV turned into an underground garage, the lights flickering like a strobe as they descended into darkness. Where were they?

The SUV's tires squealed as it hit the parking lot floor, echoing through the cavernous space. The air was thick with tension, and Mia's senses were on high alert.

As the vehicle came to a stop, Ethan was already out of his seat, his movements fluid and efficient. "This way, Mia. We need to move."

Lucas was right behind him, his eyes scanning the garage like a hawk on the hunt. "Clear," he murmured, his voice barely audible.

Alex's hand brushed against Mia's, a gentle but firm touch. "Stay close, okay?"

Mia's heart was racing, but she nodded, her voice stuck in her throat. She followed Ethan and Lucas, her eyes adjusting to the dim lighting.

They moved swiftly, their footsteps echoing off the concrete walls. The air was heavy with the scent of oil and gasoline, and Mia felt like she was walking into the belly of the beast.

Suddenly, Ethan stopped, his hand raised in warning. Lucas moved forward, his eyes locked onto something in the shadows.

"What is it?" Mia whispered, her voice barely audible.

Ethan's expression was grim. "We have company."

The shadows seemed to move, and Mia's heart skipped a beat. Who was waiting for them?

Ethan's warning hung in the air like a challenge. Mia's eyes strained to see what was lurking in the shadows, but all she could make out was the faint outline of figures.

Lucas's voice was low and deadly. "Three... no, four of them. Armed."

Alex's grip on Mia's arm tightened. "Get her out of here, now."

Ethan shook his head, his eyes locked onto the approaching figures. "No, we need to take them down. Lucas, can you cover us?"

Lucas nodded, his hand dipping into his jacket. A moment later, he was holding a sleek black gun, his finger resting on the trigger.

Mia's heart was racing, her mind spinning with questions. Who were these people? What did they want?

The figures emerged from the shadows, their faces obscured by black ski masks. They moved with precision, their guns trained on Mia and the others.

Ethan's voice was cold, his eyes locked onto the leader. "You don't want to do this."

The leader chuckled, the sound echoing through the garage. "We're just here to collect the package, Ethan. Don't make this harder than it has to be."

Mia's eyes narrowed. Package? They were talking about her, weren't they?

The leader's chuckle sent a chill down Mia's spine. She was the package, she was sure of it. The masked figures moved closer, their guns unwavering.

Ethan's stance shifted, his body language screaming danger. "Lucas, now."

Lucas's gun barked, the sound echoing through the garage like thunder. One of the masked figures dropped, his gun clattering to the floor.

The others didn't flinch, their guns still trained on Mia and the others. The leader raised his hand, and the figures moved in, a synchronized dance of violence.

Alex yanked Mia behind him, his eyes locked onto the approaching figures. "Stay down," he growled.

Mia's heart was racing, her breath stuck in her throat. This was it. She was going to die in a dirty garage, surrounded by strangers.

Ethan and Lucas moved, their bodies a blur of motion. Guns fired, the sound deafening. Mia's ears rang, her vision blurring.

And then, just as suddenly as it started, it was over. The masked figures were down, their guns scattered across the floor.

Ethan and Lucas stood, their chests heaving, their guns still trained on the bodies.

Mia's eyes locked onto the leader, his mask askew, revealing a sliver of skin. A tattoo. A snake coiled around his neck.

Her mind flashed back to her investigation. Ryder Innovations. Project Eclipse.

The snake tattoo.

Mia's mind was spinning, connections firing like sparks. The snake tattoo. She'd seen it before, in the encrypted files at Ryder Innovations. It was a symbol, a signature of some sort.

Ethan's voice cut through the ringing in her ears. "Mia, we need to move. Now."

Lucas was already moving, his eyes scanning the garage. "We can't stay here. More will come."

Alex's grip on her arm was firm, but gentle. "Mia, you okay?"

Mia nodded, her voice stuck in her throat. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. "The tattoo... I've seen it before. It's connected to Project Eclipse."

Ethan's expression turned grim. "I thought so. We need to get you safe, and fast."

The group moved swiftly, their footsteps echoing through the garage. They were heading for a nondescript door, a metal sign reading "Maintenance" above it.

Alex keyed in a code, and the door swung open, revealing a narrow stairwell. "This way."

Mia hesitated, her instincts screaming at her. Was she walking into a trap? But Ethan and Lucas were already moving, their guns at the ready.

She took a deep breath and followed Alex into the unknown.
