Birds flew across the sky, wings fluttering, the sounds of chirping in the bright blue sky as the sun beamed down into a small house in a town. As the light of the sun hit a young boy's face, he moved and groaned in his creaking bed.

The chirping of birds was interrupted with a loud BOOM!!! as a girl kicked open the boy's bedroom door and dragged him out of his bed.

"WAKE THE HELL UP!" she yelled in rage and annoyance.

The boy got on his feet, rubbing his head as he had hit it on the floor when he was dragged.

"What was that for?" he exclaimed.

"You need to get up, Liam. How do you think you'll ever get a job if you keep sleeping through interviews?" she glared at him. "Now get on some clothes, and next time get an alarm." She started walking out of his room.

"Yeah, yeah." Liam started getting ready, fixing his messy brown hair and putting on a white shirt and brown pants with some matching shoes, and finally a black necklace with the symbol of a mitsudomoe. Liam walked downstairs and saw his sister.

"Leah, how am I looking?" Liam said as he did a little spin with a large smile.

"Can you be any less presentable?" Leah rolled her eyes but started looking wistfully at Liam's necklace. Her tone softened as she said, "You look good in Dad's necklace. Mom was right—"

Liam interrupted, "I look just like him."

Leah walked closer to Liam, embracing him in a warm hug. "It fits you," she finished. "But yeah, you really do look like him." They both laughed softly as Leah let him go and patted his shoulder.

"You're going to get this job, and then you're going to have a bright future, rise the ranks… I just want you to make it out of this town, see the world. You're 19, you have your whole life ahead of you," she said sincerely before pushing him out the door.

"But seriously, get the job this time," she said, furrowing her eyebrows.

"You got it, sis." Liam gave her two thumbs up before he started to walk down the sidewalk.

---

Liam walked down a quiet concrete path, his head facing down as he kicked a couple of small pebbles on the path and eventually spotted a small, run-down rectangular building. Liam checked his phone before looking back up.

"This is the place," Liam said in denial, wishing it wasn't true. As he walked closer to the building, he opened the door, feeling the cold rust on the knob.

"Is anyone here?" Liam whispered loudly, part of him wishing for no one to respond.

"Yeah, c'mon in," a deep guttural voice spoke out, kind of muffled.

Liam went deeper inside the building, flinching as the door slammed closed on its own.

"I'm here for the interview," Liam announced as he opened a door to a brightly lit room—technically the only room with working light. Liam walked in and was instantly punched in the face with the strong smell of beer and cigarettes. His first thought: This job's not worth it.

He was startled by a large man in a chair, smoking and eating a burger in a gross way that made Liam uncomfortable. The large, overweight, sweaty man turned and looked at Liam.

"So you're the new guy," the man said with his mouth full before resuming to chew with his mouth open.

Liam, with a straight face, closed the door back slowly and started to walk out.

"Hey!" The guy threw open the door, pointing at Liam. "Where the hell are you going?"

Liam ran toward the door with the guy chasing after him. He grabbed the rusty knob and twisted it, only for it to pop off, the pieces falling on the floor. Liam laughed quietly as he started to cry.

"Your doorknob broke," Liam turned to the large man.

"Why, you little shit," the guy said, putting Liam in a headlock as Liam let out a high-pitched scream.

---

Liam sat in a black chair in front of a dusty desk.

"I'm Bob, and you must be Larry—"

"My name's Liam," Liam corrected him.

"Yeah, right, Liam." Bob rubbed his eyes and the black circles around them. "So you want to work in construction, huh?" Bob crossed his arms before walking out. "Well, c'mon."

Liam got up and followed Bob outside. They went onto an empty construction site where piles of rocks and steel beams rested wherever they wanted.

"Let's see if you're any good."

Liam smiled widely. "Does this mean I get the job?"

Bob looked at Liam with a stoic expression. "What? Oh yeah, sure, whatever."

Bob picked up a steel beam with just his right hand and put it on his shoulder. Liam did the same.

"Show off," Bob said, looking at Liam.

"You did the same thing," Liam retaliated.

"No, I didn't," Bob said, his face serious as he picked up another with just his left hand this time. Liam followed Bob's lead.

"Two? Wow," Bob said sarcastically, rolling his eyes.

Liam looked at Bob with his mouth open as if he wanted to say something.

"Y'know what, big guy?" Liam put his foot under a steel beam and kicked it up, making Bob raise a brow. It landed on top of the other two Liam was holding. "I think you're just jealous you're not young anymore," Liam smirked.

Bob did the same. "I'm only 32."

---

Bob and Liam sat on the ground eating burgers as they watched the sunset, the bright orange light glowing in contrast to Liam's golden eyes.

"You did good, kid," Bob said proudly and smirked, looking at the sunset.

Liam smiled and got up. "Anything else?" He reached his hand out to Bob.

"You're not done yet," Bob said as he took Liam's hand and got up.

"Heh." Liam scratched his head.

"You hungry?" Bob stretched.

"Oh no—"

"Well, I am," Bob cut him off. "Let's go. I know a good place nearby for some burgers."

Bob walked away, Liam right behind him. They walked down the road, darkness flooding the area as the sun fully disappeared.

They walked into a small empty restaurant, the old bell on the door ringing as they entered. Bob took a seat, Liam sat in front of him. Bob looked at Liam's necklace, squinting his eyes.

"Welcome. Can I get you guys anything?" a woman said, her voice tired and slightly annoyed.

Liam picked up and looked at the menu. "I'll just have a—" His words caught in his throat as his eyes widened in fear and surprise. The waitress screamed and stepped back.

"Where'd you get that necklace?" Bob said, his eyes cold as he held a silver revolver at Liam's head.

Liam's smile froze on his face. "H-huh," he stammered.

"Wrong answer, kid." Bob sighed and pulled the trigger, sending out a loud BANG!

—Everything black—

Liam gasped as he opened his eyes, his nose runny as his eyes cried tears nonstop. Liam tried to breathe as his heart skipped beats and his body shook uncontrollably.

Liam fell out of his seat, hitting the floor as he looked at Ben.

Liam patted and checked his body and head for wounds or bullet holes. He looked and saw everything had stopped—the bullet frozen mid-air, Bob frozen with his gun in his hand, the waitress' expression stuck in fear.

"Freaky stuff, huh?" a young girl said as she sat next to Liam on the ground. "I guess you never really know a person. Well, you didn't really know him, did you?" The girl side-eyed Liam, her stare cold as her pink eyes slowly began to glow as she grinned widely.
