Chapter 4 - 3

"Wait!" I shout quickly before Hubris, who is already fired up and ready to kill, can open the massive door. "Before we go in... I want to write." Hubris nods. He doesn't seem to mind. So I take out my book and pen and begin.

"So much hurt,Yet here I am,Standing before this door,Because my god has heard.heard, he has my sins,Heard, he has my struggles, yet he never forsaketh me,Like a father shall never forsaketh his son."I close my book. I nod to Hubris, signaling that I'm ready for him to open the door. We each stand on one side of the door and together we push it open with all our strength. It squeaks and screeches. It's probably capable of bursting our eardrums if we listen to it for too long, but luckily that doesn't ever happen. After a bit of pushing, the door is now wide open. From now on I take the lead. I have to admit I've never been so scared in my life. Everything is pitch black. But as soon as Hubris also stepped in, things took a dark turn quickly. The door slammed shut behind us with an extremely loud bang. Immediately afterwards, on both sides of the corridor we had just entered, a row of torches lights up out of nowhere, illuminating the entire room! I wish they hadn't done that. It only makes me more scared of the unknown that I am about to face. But as I look around the room, I can't help but notice that everything else is also solid gold, just like the door we just opened! The only difference is that we now have a red carpet leading straight ahead. But then I realise... we're not alone. At the end of each side of the next entrance, are two crimson-red knights. And they're alive and moving! I don't waste any time and immediately draw my sword. But I'm still nervous. This is my first real fight. "You take the right, I'll take the left." I whisper as I lean towards Hubris. He nods. But there was no time to waste, as the two knights charged at each of us! Luckily, I had already drawn my sword and just barely managed to block the knight's first blow. "Fuck!" I yell, obviously surprised by the speed of their attacks and the way they suddenly came at us. I rush forward, to the center of the red carpet, so that I'm not too cramped in the corner and have more space to move. The knight follows and strikes at me again with his sword. This time I manage to parry! Now it's my turn to attack! I sprint forward, clashing my sword with his again and again! We are getting faster and faster. Until... the knight's sword deflects onto mine! That's my chance for the kill! I let out a loud scream and slash my sword, with all my power, straight at the knight's neck. But for some reason my sword does not go through! I try harder and harder, putting my all into various blows! But it doesn't help...I quickly storm back, next to Hubris, who also seems to have had no luck in the fight against his knight: "Didn't you get through his neck either!?" I scream desperately. "No." Hubris says. As calm as ever. "But what else can we do?!" Hubris watches the two knights. "We need to look for weak spots." "Weak spots?" I reply. "I don't think knights in hell are supposed to have weak spots." Hubris looks at me, and I can just tell he's disappointed. "Everything has weaknesses." He turns around and continues to watch the knights, analyzing them as best he can. But of course the knights are not going to let him do that without putting on a fight. They both immediately charge at him! "Not so fast, buddy!" I exhale, blocking one of the knights' blows towards Hubris, while he's already taking care of the other one again. I and the other knight keep exchanging heavy blows. He even grazes me on one of my shoulders! But that's when I notice something. On the knight's entire body, there is only one spot, which isn't covered entirely inside armor. It's the slit in which their eyes see through! I immediately share this discovery to Hubris. "You gotta hit them at that slit in their helmet, where their eyes are! That's the only place which isn't guarded by armor!" Hubris nods, and our swords keep swinging. "We have to work together!" I call across the room. Hubris silently agrees, and immediately, in the blink of an eye, sprints across the room and in front of the knight I was supposed to be fighting. And he has no intention of waiting or holding back as he forces his flat hand straight into that slit I had mentioned, killing the knight instantly. He probably gouged out his eyes, or worse. A disgusting thought. Now it was just the two of us against the one remaining knight. But now that we had found his weakness, it wasn't nearly as difficult to defeat him. I distracted the knight by fighting him, and at some point Hubris stepped in and killed him too. "Well done!" I say, looking over at Hubris with a smile. Hubris, however, does not care and just replies: "Let's keep going. Our real enemy is right behind this door!" My expression immediately becomes more stiff and serious as I slowly nod. We walked closer to the much larger door in anticipation of what awaited us. When we reach the end of the carpet, we both grab hold of the door on either side... And before we push it open, I turn to Hubris once more and speak: "Hubris...this is my fight. Do not interfere unless absolutely necessary." I look Hubris straight in the eye. He nods and we push the door open together. It squeaks and makes much more noise than the door we opened earlier. It was also much harder to open. But we managed it. Once it was opened, we looked inside to see a shadowy figure, sitting on a throne. It seems to wear a crown as well. I already draw my sword, and carefully walk deeper into the darkness that envelopes the entire room. Hubris follows right behind me. Once we reached, what I think to be the middle of the room, the unknown figure stands up...
