"Koneko! Stand down!" Rias screamed from the center of the room, genuine panic in her voice. "He's not the enemy!"

Koneko completely ignored her King. She closed the distance before I was fully on my feet, leaping up to drive her knee straight into my face.

My Gamer's Mind cleared the lingering pain instantly. I didn't dodge this time. I raised both hands, catching her knee squarely in my palms.

The impact sent a shockwave through my wrists, but my Strength held.

With a sharp exhale, I pushed forward, using her own downward momentum against her and throwing her violently back toward the center of the room.

She sailed through the air and crashed through a stack of wooden crates, splintering them into kindling.

I stood up fully, rolling my stiff shoulder. I mentally equipped my heavy steel gauntlets, the thick metal encasing my forearms with a satisfying, heavy clink. I started walking slowly toward the pile of broken wood.

"I actually did want to test your strength, Koneko," I called out, my voice steady. "You hit way harder than your size suggests. Since you're the Rook, I figured it would at least be a good fight."

The pile of wood exploded outward. Koneko blurred toward me, her face completely stoic but her eyes burning with pure annoyance. She feinted low and swung a heavy elbow aimed at the bridge of my nose.

I slipped inside her guard, sidestepping the elbow, and delivered a short, brutal jab directly into the side of her ribcage.

The steel gauntlet made a sickening thud against her side. Koneko grunted, her eyes widening in actual pain, and she stumbled sideways, clutching her ribs.

"That hurt," she muttered, glaring daggers at me.

I squared up, ready to continue, when a flash of silver caught my eye. Kiba was suddenly there, her broadsword swinging in a lethal, horizontal arc aimed right at my waist.

I brought both of my gauntleted arms down, crossing them in a heavy X block. The steel sword clashed against my armor, throwing a shower of orange sparks over our faces. I gritted my teeth, holding the Knight's blade at bay.

"That is enough!" Rias's voice boomed, carrying a wave of thick, suffocating demonic pressure that forced all of us to freeze. "Both of you! No fighting!"

Kiba immediately pulled her sword back, sheathing it with a sharp click. She stepped back, offering Koneko a hand and helping the smaller girl to her feet.

As the two of them walked past me to return to Rias, Koneko didn't even look up. But as she stepped near my boots, she brought her heel down in a vicious, aura-infused stomp.

I casually pulled my foot back half an inch. Her shoe slammed into the concrete, instantly cracking the foundation and creating a spiderweb crater right where my toes had been a second ago.

"Koneko!" Rias scolded sharply.

"I'm sorry," Koneko said, her voice completely deadpan, not an ounce of regret on her face. "My foot slipped."

I just stared at her with a completely blank expression. She was holding a grudge because my spectral wolf had picked up her cat. It didn't even have a scratch on it. Devils were unbelievably petty.

Rias hurried over, stepping between us, and bowed her head slightly. "I am so sorry, Shiro. That was completely unacceptable."

I waved it off, dismissing the gauntlets back into my inventory. "Forget it." I turned around and started walking out the massive hangar doors into the cool night air.

"Where are you going?" Rias called out.

"I'm walking home," I replied over my shoulder. "Before Akeno decides she wants to take a swing at me too."

"Oh, don't worry about me, Shiro," Akeno's sultry voice drifted out of the warehouse, laced with a teasing, dark amusement. "I don't bite... much!"

A slight shiver ran down my spine. I didn't look back. I just kept walking.

...

About an hour later, I realized exactly how badly I had miscalculated.

When Rias teleported us to the warehouse, I hadn't really paid attention to where we were. Now, walking under the flickering, broken streetlights, I realized I was on the absolute outermost edge of Kuoh. There were no bus stops. No trains. Not even a single passing cab.

For a solid twenty minutes, I had to walk through the dingiest, most rundown industrial sector of the city.

The only saving grace was when a group of five guys with switchblades stepped out of an alleyway to try and mug me. After spending the last few days getting thrown through walls by super-powered Devils and nearly skewered by Fallen Angels, taking my frustration out on a few regular street thugs felt incredibly therapeutic.

Once I was done throwing out the trash, I picked up the wad of yen they had dropped, shoved it into my pocket, and jogged the rest of the way home. I was completely done with this stupid city for the night.

When I finally unlocked my front door, the house was dark and quiet. I kicked off my shoes, walked into the living room, and collapsed face-first onto the couch. I just wanted to close my eyes for five minutes before hitting the Instant Dungeon.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I groaned, fishing it out. The screen glowed in the dark room.

[Private Number]

I stared at it for a second. Normally, I'd ignore it, but with everything going on, I swiped to answer and held it to my ear.

"Who is this?" I asked, my voice exhausted.

A soft, sweet laugh echoed through the speaker. "Don't tell me you forgot about me already... lover~"

My blood ran cold. I sat straight up on the couch.

"Kalawarner," I said, my voice hardening.

After the fight in the park, I had actually tried calling 'Hikari's' number, just to see if I could trace it. The automated service provider had just told me the number didn't exist. She had covered her tracks perfectly.

"So, you know my true name. Interesting~" she purred, sounding genuinely amused.
